World Mental Health Day – Your Mental Health Matters!

Mental health is everyone’s concern. Every child, young person, and adult deserves to feel safe, supported, included, and valued.

At Youth Relief and Development Program (YRDP), we believe that peace begins with well-being. Through purposeful play, sports, psychosocial support, and inclusive community activities, we encourage young people to build trust, express their feelings, support one another, and create stronger, more peaceful communities.

Let us break the stigma around mental health, listen without judgment, and remind one another that asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

Together, we can build a community where everyone feels they belong and no one has to struggle alone.

Purposeful Play: Choosing Peace Over Violence

At Youth Relief and Development Program (YRDP), we believe that building a peaceful community starts with how we interact with one another every day.

Through Purposeful Play, we create spaces where children and young people can learn to respect differences, listen to one another, cooperate, manage disagreements and choose nonviolent ways to solve challenges.

The game is not only about winning. It is about learning how to play fairly, include others, communicate with respect, and build trust. These lessons can move from the playing field into our homes, schools and community.

For us, every game is an opportunity to practice peace.

We play. We learn. We lead. We build peace—without violence.

An Unforgettable Moment from CAC Busia

One of the special moments in our journey this year was seeing Coach Arlene Byose represent our community at the Coaches Across Continents (CAC) on-field training in Busia, Uganda, in August 2026.

For us at YRDP and Zoom Furaha, this was more than a training. It was an opportunity to learn, connect, grow and bring new knowledge back to our community in Kakuma.

From the training room to the football field, Arlene experienced the power of learning alongside coaches from different communities and backgrounds. Her participation reminds us that when local coaches are given opportunities to learn, they bring that learning home and multiply its impact.

We are proud of this moment and grateful for the growing CAC–YRDP journey.

125 PEOPLE. ONE COMMUNITY. ONE JOURNEY FOR PEACE. 💜🕊️

On 19 September 2026, Youth Relief and Development Program (YRDP) brought the Kakuma community together for the Play for Peace Community Walk for Peace 2026 in Kakuma Refugee Camp, Turkana County, Kenya.

👣 125 people joined us, children, youth, women, men, refugees, host-community members, and people with disabilities, walking together for peace, unity, inclusion, friendship, and hope.

The walk created a beautiful opportunity for people from different backgrounds to come together, connect, and share one powerful message:

🕊️ Peace belongs to everyone, and we build it together.

💜 Our favorite moment was seeing participants walking side by side, encouraging one another and celebrating the strength of our diverse community.

This was more than a walk.
It was a shared step toward a more peaceful and inclusive Kakuma.

🙏 Thank you to every participant, volunteer, facilitator, partner, and supporter who helped make the day possible.

# # Global Play Day – Kakuma, Kenya 🌍⚽

Today, children and young people came together through play, movement and teamwork through YRDP in Kakuma.

Using simple games and a ball, participants created opportunities to connect, cooperate, communicate and enjoy playing together.

For YRDP, Global Play Day is a reminder that play is more than recreation. It can be a powerful tool for building friendship, inclusion, confidence, respect and positive relationships among children and young people.

One of our key lessons from the session was simple:

- You do not need expensive equipment to create meaningful play. You need a safe space, supportive coaches and an opportunity for children to play together.

YRDP is excited to continue developing and using purposeful play to support peacebuilding, inclusion, climate education and youth leadershipin our community.

Play brings us together.

🌍 PLAY, LEARN & LEAD: 361 YOUNG LIVES CONNECTED THROUGH PLAY, PEACE & INCLUSION

At Youth Relief and Development Program (YRDP), we are proud and grateful to have hosted Play for Peace – Play, Learn and Lead, a one-month initiative created to bring children and young people from different nationalities, communities, genders, and abilities together in Kakuma Refugee Camp.

Over four weeks, the activities continued to grow, reaching 361 children and youth in total:

📅 Week 1: 50 participants
📅 Week 2: 68 participants
📅 Week 3: 98 participants
📅 Week 4: 145 participants

From 50 participants in the first week to 145 in the final week, the growing participation showed us how much children and young people value spaces where they can play, connect, learn, and belong.

The initiative brought together girls and boys, young people with disabilities, and participants from different communities and nationalities. Through cooperative games, sports, teamwork, and shared learning, participants had the opportunity to break barriers, create new friendships, learn from one another, and experience the power of working together.

The real achievement was not just the number 361. It was the connections created.

Every game became an opportunity to understand someone different.
Every team became a space for cooperation.
Every friendship became a small bridge between communities.
Every participant became part of a bigger story of peace and inclusion.

At YRDP, we believe that play is a powerful tool for peacebuilding. When children and youth play together, they learn to communicate, cooperate, respect differences, support one another, and build relationships that can extend beyond the playing field.

Play. Learn. Lead. Build Peace.

We are deeply grateful to all the children, youth, facilitators, volunteers, partners, and community members who made Play, Learn and Lead possible.

361 participants. 4 weeks. One shared purpose: creating friendships, strengthening inclusion, and building peace through play.
