🌍 PLAY, LEARN & LEAD: 361 YOUNG LIVES CONNECTED THROUGH PLAY, PEACE & INCLUSION

At Youth Relief and Development Program (YRDP), we are proud and grateful to have hosted Play for Peace – Play, Learn and Lead, a one-month initiative created to bring children and young people from different nationalities, communities, genders, and abilities together in Kakuma Refugee Camp.

Over four weeks, the activities continued to grow, reaching 361 children and youth in total:

📅 Week 1: 50 participants
📅 Week 2: 68 participants
📅 Week 3: 98 participants
📅 Week 4: 145 participants

From 50 participants in the first week to 145 in the final week, the growing participation showed us how much children and young people value spaces where they can play, connect, learn, and belong.

The initiative brought together girls and boys, young people with disabilities, and participants from different communities and nationalities. Through cooperative games, sports, teamwork, and shared learning, participants had the opportunity to break barriers, create new friendships, learn from one another, and experience the power of working together.

The real achievement was not just the number 361. It was the connections created.

Every game became an opportunity to understand someone different.
Every team became a space for cooperation.
Every friendship became a small bridge between communities.
Every participant became part of a bigger story of peace and inclusion.

At YRDP, we believe that play is a powerful tool for peacebuilding. When children and youth play together, they learn to communicate, cooperate, respect differences, support one another, and build relationships that can extend beyond the playing field.

Play. Learn. Lead. Build Peace.

We are deeply grateful to all the children, youth, facilitators, volunteers, partners, and community members who made Play, Learn and Lead possible.

361 participants. 4 weeks. One shared purpose: creating friendships, strengthening inclusion, and building peace through play.

At Zoom Furaha, a Play for Peace community led by YRDP, we believe that every child deserves more than survival—they deserve moments that remind them they are valued, safe, and loved. Through play, laughter, friendship, and compassionate human connection, we are helping children rediscover the joy that conflict tried to take away.
A smile shared during a game, a helping hand, a bottle of water after an energetic activity—these are not small gestures. They are powerful reminders that peace is built one act of kindness at a time.
Every session brings together children from different nationalities, cultures, and backgrounds, proving that despite the divisions created by conflict, humanity has the power to unite. On our playgrounds, there are no strangers—only teammates, friends, and future peacebuilders.

In Kakuma Refugee Camp, thousands of children have grown up knowing the sounds of conflict more than the sounds of laughter. Many have fled war, violence, and unimaginable hardship, carrying invisible wounds that cannot always be seen.
In this month of July 2026, through the "Play, Learn and Lead" event, YRDP, in partnership with Play for Peace, is helping rewrite that story.
Children and youth from different nationalities are coming together not as refugees from different countries, but as friends. Through cooperative games, teamwork, and shared moments of joy, they are breaking down barriers, building trust, and discovering that peace begins with simple human connections.
A football, a game, a circle of laughter, and a safe space can become powerful tools for healing. Every smile shared, every new friendship formed, and every child who finds the confidence to lead reminds us that play is far more than recreation, it is a pathway to recovery, belonging, and hope.
In humanitarian settings, we often focus on providing food, water, shelter, healthcare, and education. These needs are essential. But children also need opportunities to play, express themselves, heal from trauma, and simply experience the joy of childhood. When we invest in play, we invest in stronger, more resilient, and more peaceful communities.
We extend our deepest gratitude to the Play for Peace team for believing in the children and youth of Kakuma and making this initiative possible. Together, we are creating spaces where healing happens, friendships flourish, and tomorrow's peacebuilders begin their journey.

🌍 Celebrating Global Recognition for Inclusion Through Purposeful Play

At the Youth Relief and Development Program (YRDP), we are incredibly proud of our Founder and Coordinator, Yusuf Mulamba, for receiving the Coaches Across Continents (CAC) Inclusion Certificate in recognition of his commitment to advancing inclusion through Purposeful Play.

Throughout the month of May 2026, YRDP actively participated in the CAC Inclusion Campaign, delivering inclusive, play-based activities that promoted equity, participation, and belonging for children and young people in Kakuma Refugee Camp, Kenya. Through this campaign, we strengthened safe and inclusive spaces where every participant, regardless of ability or background, could learn, play, and thrive together.

This achievement is part of a remarkable global collaboration. To date, 14 coaches from 13 organizations around the world have delivered these games, positively impacting more than 1,000 young people. Together, we have also equipped 90 new coaches and peer leaders with the knowledge and skills to facilitate these activities, creating a sustainable model that will continue transforming communities for years to come.

This recognition reflects YRDP's unwavering commitment to using Purposeful Play as a tool for peacebuilding, inclusion, leadership development, and social change. We are honored to stand alongside organizations across the world that are creating Local Solutions for Global Goals.

Play is not a luxury, it is a necessity.

When people think about the needs of young people in Kakuma Refugee Camp, they often think of food, healthcare, education, and shelter. These are essential. But there is another powerful need that is often overlooked: play.

Through play, children and youth learn important life skills, heal from difficult experiences, build confidence, and create meaningful friendships. A simple game can bring smiles, restore hope, strengthen teamwork, and remind young people that they belong to a caring community.

At YRDP, we believe that every young person deserves safe spaces where they can laugh, connect, and grow. Play is more than recreation—it is a pathway to healing, peacebuilding, inclusion, and a brighter future.

Today, the Youth Relief and Development Program (YRDP) proudly joined the global community in celebrating World Refugee Day by bringing together young people from diverse backgrounds in a spirit of unity, resilience, and hope.

Through cooperative games, cultural exchanges, and meaningful interactions, young people had the opportunity to connect, build friendships, and celebrate the strength that comes from diversity. The event served as a reminder that every refugee has talents, dreams, and the potential to contribute positively to their communities when given the opportunity.

At YRDP, we remain committed to empowering refugee and host community youth through safe spaces, leadership development, peacebuilding initiatives, and opportunities that foster inclusion and social cohesion.

When children gather in a circle, something powerful happens. They see one another, listen to one another, and realize they are not alone. Through cooperative play, children build friendships, strengthen trust, and create meaningful connections that help them feel safe and valued.

For children who may feel lonely or isolated, these moments become opportunities for healing. As they laugh, share ideas, solve challenges, and support one another, they develop confidence, a sense of belonging, and positive relationships.

Cooperative play creates safe spaces where every child has a voice and a place. Together, children discover the power of community, inclusion, and teamwork—learning that they are stronger when they stand side by side.

At YRDP, we believe that play is more than a game; it is a pathway to healing, friendship, and peace.
