Memorable Day at UIR

This month at UIR again, where we never get tired of organizing events and creating opportunities for our learners to enjoy, interact, and build friendship. On Tuesday, 11 August 2026, UIR Organisation Facilitators continued coordinating activities that brought learners together in a special and enjoyable way.

This time, two UIR teams came together—one from the UIR Centre and another from the Field—to make the learners happy and create a stronger sense of togetherness. The two teams joined as one family, giving learners an opportunity to meet, interact, play, make friends, and enjoy time together.

This round was full of excitement and enjoyment. The learners participated actively in different games, and they enjoyed the activities so much that some learners were not ready to go back to their homes.

One of the exciting games involved learners jumping from “MA” to “BA.” The activity created laughter and excitement while giving learners an opportunity to work together, interact, and enjoy themselves.

After the games and other activities, the learners had another special moment for music and dancing. This is where UIR discovered that our learners have different talents and amazing creativity. One group of learners organized their own dance performance and then invited the UIR facilitators to dance with them. The moment brought even more happiness, laughter, and excitement among the learners.

The session gave learners an opportunity to enjoy, interact with one another, promote friendship, share their talents, build confidence, and celebrate as one family.

It was a day filled with smiles, laughter, friendship, teamwork, dancing, creativity, talent, and memories—a wonderful day that made history at UIR.

The excitement did not stop with the learners. Even neighbors are now wishing for their children to join UIR’s SEL/PSS sessions, showing the growing appreciation of these activities within the wider community.

UIR trusts that children deserve opportunities to learn, play, interact, make friends, express themselves, discover their talents, build confidence, and enjoy their childhood.

SEL/PSS at UIR is helping children connect with one another, develop important social and emotional skills, discover their talents, and create memories that bring happiness and hope for a brighter future.

The Beautiful Children of UIR-CBO: The Future of Kenya

With the beautiful children of UIR-CBO in Kakuma Refugee Camp, we see the future of Kenya. Their smiles, dreams, courage, and determination inspire hope for a brighter tomorrow.
Through Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) and Psychosocial Support (PSS), these young minds are gaining more than academic knowledge. They are learning to understand themselves, express their feelings, build confidence, communicate with others, solve problems, develop positive relationships, and believe in their dreams.

At UIR-CBO, together with our partner Cohere, we create safe, supportive, and inclusive spaces where children can learn, play, express themselves, discover their talents, build resilience, and nurture their hopes for the future.
Through SEL & PSS, children are developing the skills and confidence needed to become responsible, compassionate, and resilient members of their communities.

While supporting communities to explore opportunities for education, well-being, resilience, and self-reliance, UIR-CBO remains committed to walking alongside refugees and host communities.

Building Self-Awareness Through SEL & PSS in Kakuma Refugee Camp

On Friday, 7 August 2026, Unity Intervention for Refugees (UIR CBO) conducted an inspiring Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) & Psychosocial Support (PSS) session with children in Kakuma Refugee Camp, Kenya, focusing on an important life skill: self-awareness.

Before the session, many learners thought that knowing their name was enough to say they knew themselves. However, through the SEL & PSS session, they discovered that self-awareness goes much deeper—it means understanding who you are, recognizing your strengths and abilities, understanding your emotions, and knowing how you respond to both success and failure.

To make the lesson practical, the UIR CBO facilitator selected one child from the group and used him as an example. The facilitator asked:

Who are you?
What kind of work or activity do you do better than others?
How do you feel when you succeed because of your own effort?
How do you feel when you fail at something?

The facilitator then brought these questions to the entire class, encouraging every learner to reflect on their own experiences and emotions.

The children were challenged to think deeply:

After learning the definition of self-awareness, can you create your own definition based on your understanding?
What is the importance of self-awareness?
What other elements are found within self-awareness?
What have you learned about yourself from today's SEL & PSS session?

The session revealed an important lesson: some children already have knowledge and understanding, but they do not always know how to organize, categorize, or express what they know. Through SEL & PSS, learners are gaining the confidence and skills to organize their thoughts, recognize their emotions, understand their strengths, and communicate their ideas.

At UIR CBO, we believe education goes beyond academic learning. SEL & PSS help children understand themselves, manage their emotions, build confidence, develop resilience, and create positive relationships with others.

Every child has knowledge, talents, feelings, and potential. At UIR CBO, we continue creating safe and supportive spaces where children can discover themselves, learn from their experiences, and grow with confidence.

Last Monday, children at Unity Intervention for Refugees (UIR) CBO in Kakuma Refugee Camp, Kenya, actively participated in another inspiring Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) & Psychosocial Support (PSS) session. We are encouraged to see that the children are committed to attending their daily sessions consistently, demonstrating their enthusiasm for learning and personal growth.

These activities helped strengthen their communication skills, active listening, confidence, teamwork, and critical thinking while providing a safe and supportive environment where every child could freely express their ideas and emotions.

At the end of the session, the children were divided into different groups. Each group discussed the key lessons they had learned during the day and selected one representative to present their group's reflections to everyone. This activity encouraged collaboration, leadership, public speaking, and respect for one another's ideas while reinforcing the knowledge gained during the session.
Objective: The objective of the session was to strengthen children's social and emotional learning by promoting active participation, teamwork, communication, and self-confidence through interactive learning methods.
Impact: The session increased children's confidence in expressing themselves, improved their effort to work together, enhanced their listening and sharing storytelling skills, and encouraged leadership among young learners. It also strengthened their understanding of the day's lessons through peer learning and group presentations.

At Unity Intervention for Refugees (UIR) with the generous support of Cohere, we are working to bring overage refugee children, who have been displaced as a result of conflict and crisis, back to quality education and a better future in Kenya's refugee camps via the Children's Education Support Programme.

The programme doesn't stop at academics, and it adds Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) and Psychosocial Support (PSS) services, so that every child can learn in a safe, supportive and inclusive environment, from where they can heal, grow, build confidence and reach their full potential.

UIR is making a difference in the lives of children facing challenges of displacement by supporting their emotional wellbeing, developing their life skills, and supporting the development of their resilience through child-centred learning, providing emotional wellbeing support, and offering hope of a better tomorrow through caring facilitators.

We want all children to feel safe, valued and empowered, so much more than just learning to learn, at UIR. In partnership with Cohere, we are building areas for refugee children to heal from trauma, build life skills, and to dream beyond the confines of displacement.

Big congratulations to all Community Based Organisations (CBOs) and Refugee-Led Organisations (RLOs) in Kakuma Refugee Camp for augmenting their collaboration and partnership with Inkomoko!

Inkomoko International Organization hosted a remarkable capacity building workshop for 10 Refugee-Led Community Based Organisations (RLOs) on Tuesday, 28 July 2026 to learn, build connections and share experiences. Four people from each organisation represented, so this led to very interesting networking and peer learning.

We are happy to say that Unity Intervention for Refugees (UIR) was one of the first organizations to attend and to participate in this impactful workshop, it is an expression of our commitment to continuous learning and to increasing our capacity to contribute to the needs of refugee and host communities.

The training included many practical aspects such as:

Identifying the brand and services offered.Recognising the brand and services provided.

One of the highlights of the workshop was the chance for each of the organisations involved to share their knowledge, insights and lessons learned. This sharing of experiences fostered partnerships, innovativeness and collaboration amongst organisations run by refugees in the development of lasting impact.

Unity Intervention for Refugees (UIR) continue to use these invaluable lessons in order to enhance our programmes, build organisational capacity and empower our communities.

We would like to thank Inkomoko International Organization for their support in strengthening and sustainability of refugee-led organisations in this valuable initiative. We are strengthening organisations and developing opportunities together for refugees and host communities.

SEL Parent/Caregiver Session: Parents/Caregivers Understanding Their Responsibilities

This session was part of the Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) and Psychosocial Support (PSS) programme, where Unity Intervention for Refugees (UIR) was able to assist parents and carers with the importance of their role in supporting children emotionally, socially and psychologically.

Parents/carers were reminded that they are the first teachers and role models of their children. Their love, guidance and interactions every day have a big influence on the character and behaviour of the children, their confidence and how well they deal with difficulties. Participants learned that a nurturing, caring, and safe home environment is crucial for healthy development of children.

Facilitators emphasised that parents and carers play a crucial role in supporting their children in a variety of ways, such as:

Offering love, care, protection and emotional support.
Actively listening to children, with patience, empathy and respect.
Promoting open dialogue and opportunities for children to share their ideas and emotions.
Encouraging positive behavior through guidance and positive discipline practices, not punishment.
Assisting children's learning through close collaboration with teachers and involvement in school activity.
Important values being taught, including honesty, respect, kindness, responsibility and co-operation.
Identifying emotional distress and requesting assistance, if necessary.
* Providing opportunities for children to play, learn and gain life skills in a safe environment.

The session also reviewed how Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) contributes to children developing self-awareness, self-confidence, emotional regulation, empathy, responsible decision making and healthy relationships. Home support was encouraged through positive communication, encouragement, and daily interactions with parents.

Additionally, the Psychosocial Support (PSS) component involved sensitizing parents to the emotional needs of children, especially those impacted by displacement, trauma, loss, and/or other forms of stress. Parents were educated on practical steps for providing emotionally supportive environments to foster healing, resilience and hope.

At the close of the session, parents/carers had a better understanding of their responsibility and were committed to being more involved in supporting their children's emotional needs, safeguarding their rights and promoting their development within the family and school. The session reiterated the importance of the role of families in helping children to face the challenges, excel in school, and grow into healthy, confident, and responsible community members when they are cared for consistently, guided to success, and supported emotionally.

Developing Resilient Organisations through Learning and Collaboration

Last week, Unity Initiative for Refugees (UIR) had the privilege of joining a three-day capacity-building workshop organized by FilmAid Kenya, which involved a cohort of 16 community-based organizations (CBOs) and refugee-led organizations (RLOs) who are working to enhance community-led impact.

The workshop was a great learning, collaborating, and sharing session. Over the three days, participants improved their skill in:

✅ Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E)—enhance planning, monitoring, measuring, and reporting program outcomes effectively.

Data Quality and Management—enhancing the process of data collection, accuracy, analysis, storage, and effective use of evidence to guide decision-making.

✅ Leadership and Governance – fostering effective organizational leadership, accountability, transparency, and good governance practices to strengthen and create more sustainable organizations.

A delegate from each participating CBO and RLO attended, providing a great forum to share experiences, discuss challenges, and share practical solutions to strengthen the quality and reach of community-based programs.

UIR would like to express its gratitude to FilmAid Kenya for conducting this meaningful and impactful training and for investing in the development and capacity of refugee-led organizations and community-based organizations. This learning and ability will solidify our dedication to providing high-quality, effective, and community-based programs that make positive, lasting change.
