Access to safe and reliable potable water is becoming a reality for St. Joseph Nyabondo Parish and the surrounding community. Through our partnership with WEFTA, we have successfully drilled a borehole yielding 5,500 litres of water per hour; a promising step toward addressing long-standing water challenges.

This project will improve health, strengthen sanitation, support livelihoods, and enhance the well-being of hundreds of families and institutions that depend on this vital resource. As we celebrate this milestone, work is already underway to equip the borehole and install the infrastructure needed to deliver sustainable water services.

We thank WEFTA for their valuable partnership and shared commitment to creating lasting change through improved access to clean and safe water.

Growing resilient communities through clean water and tree planting.

Happy World Environment Day! In western Kenya’s Kakemega County, WEFTA is proud to support an initiative of its in-country partner, SAWASHI, that integrates water access with environmental sustainability. By planting over 1,200 fruit trees at community sites supported by SAWASHI-installed water systems, the project improves food security, nutrition, and livelihoods while promoting climate resilience through carbon sequestration, soil restoration, and environmental education.

In collaboration with WEFTA, we celebrated this years at the Bio Innovations for Sustainable Development (BISD) Kholera Riverside Vetiver grass nursery by taking action where it matters most—within the Kholera River watershed.

We also launched an improved avocado seedling nursery, giving local farmers access to high-quality varieties adapted to the area's agro-climatic conditions. Every tree planted today is an investment in a greener environment, stronger livelihoods, and a more resilient future.

We had a productive engagement with Friendly Water for the World to explore opportunities for collaboration and shared impact. Through innovative use of Compressed Earth Blocks (CEBs), the organization has supported the construction of over 100 rainwater harvesting and storage tanks in schools across Western Kenya, improving access to safe water for learners.

Beyond water access, they are empowering community-based organizations to produce KEBS-certified Safi liquid soap, creating affordable hygiene solutions while strengthening local livelihoods and promoting handwashing practices.

We also visited Bio-Innovations for Sustainable Development (BISD), a community-based organization leading efforts to restore the Nzoia River watershed in Mayoni Ward. Through nature-based solutions such as vetiver grass and riparian tree planting, the group is helping protect riverbanks, reduce erosion, and strengthen local resilience.

In partnership with WEFTA, we look forward to supporting these efforts through the establishment of a Hass avocado nursery that will create both environmental and livelihood benefits for the community.

This week, we had the pleasure of hosting Jim McGill from the Reformed Church of America and Chemasas from . The visit focused on sharing WaSH Circuit Rider experiences and best practices, strengthening opportunities for future collaboration in advancing sustainable services.

As part of the visit, we paid a courtesy call to the Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Shiseso Parish Water Project, which also serves Shiseso Model Health Centre. We are pleased to note that the project remains fully functional and is now awaiting its official launch on 3rd July 2026.

Our team conducted a hydro-geological survey at Nyabondo Parish, Archdiocese of Kisumu to pave the way for drilling and equipping a new borehole. Soon, the parish community will have access to clean and reliable water. This will improve health, dignity, education, and daily livelihoods for many. In collaboration with WEFTA we are creating meaningful change that lasts.

Driving sustainability where it matters most.

Together with WEFTA, and with facilitators from County Government of Nandi and County Government of Kakamega, we brought water management committees, technicians, and public health professionals into one space to strengthen the systems behind rural water service delivery.

Stronger systems, informed actors, and shared commitment are what turn access into lasting service.

Through our Circuit Rider Program in partnership with WEFTA, we assessed an Indian Mark II pump at Sayangwe Comprehensive School in Matungu Sub-county and identified a failed cylinder as the cause of its long-standing breakdown. The non-functional pump has forced reliance on an unsafe, unprotected hand-dug well. We are taking action to restore the system and ensure the school regains reliable access to a safe, improved water source.
