Beneath our feet lies one of nature’s most powerful forces for soil health; the humble earthworm. Look at the pictures below.

Often regarded as the most important creature for soil fertility, earthworms act as “underground engineers,” improving soil structure and boosting nutrient availability.

Why earthworms matter:
✔️Nutrient Cycling: They break down organic matter and produce nutrient-rich castings that nourish plants.
✔️Aeration: Their tunnels improve soil porosity, allowing air, water, and roots to move easily.
✔️Soil Structure: They enhance water infiltration and help reduce erosion and water-logging.

Healthy soil starts from the ground up and earthworms are at the heart of it!

Pre-quenching around the pit kiln or Kon-Tiki kiln - rather than directly on the biochar - is a smart and controlled approach that enhances both safety and quality. By applying water to the surrounding area, you help regulate heat and minimize risks without interfering with the carbonization process.

Why this method works:
✔️ Controls external heat and prevents fire spread
✔️ Reduces dust and sparks around the kiln
✔️ Maintains optimal pyrolysis conditions inside the kiln
✔️ Prevents premature cooling that could affect biochar quality

This careful technique ensures biochar remains well-formed while creating a safer working environment for operators.

Smart handling. Better biochar. Safer production.

Eco2librium was proudly represented at a high-level, invite-only gathering that brought together key players shaping the future of energy access.

Our Assistant Director, Finance & Legal, Gilfine Nyangasi , participated in the Transforming Energy Access (TEA) and GET.invest -supported event - an impactful platform that convened Last Mile Distributors (LMDs), investors, donors, and sector stakeholders.

Over three dynamic days, the engagement focused on strengthening LMD business models, enhancing investment readiness, and building meaningful partnerships across the ecosystem. The sessions featured insightful plenaries, interactive workshops, peer learning opportunities, and site visits - all designed to drive sustainable growth in last mile energy distribution.

Key discussions explored:
✅ Effective engagement with donors
✅ Pathways to profitability for LMDs
✅ Leveraging artificial intelligence for smarter operations and strategy

The event also spotlighted innovations and success stories within the Distributors Collective (GDC), while creating greater awareness of opportunities for collaboration and support from external stakeholders.

As the meeting concluded, Eco2librium remains energized and inspired, ready to apply these insights to accelerate impact and expand sustainable energy access where it matters most.

As the audit exercise came to a close, the team held a final meeting where auditors reviewed project documentation to ascertain whether it accurately reflects what was observed in the field.

This concluding session focused on cross-checking records, validating data, and ensuring alignment between documented processes and on-the-ground implementation.

The auditors then wrapped up the session as they headed to Kilifi for our Artisan Pro 2 Biochar Project audit.

The Circonomy, CERES CERtification Of Environmental Standards GmbH teams visited our restoration sites - where we have planted bamboo and indigenous trees - and bamboo farms to assess the availability of bamboo and its potential to sustainably support the project over time.

The visit focused on evaluating existing bamboo resources, understanding growth capacity, and discussing plans to expand supply to strengthen long-term project sustainability.

This is key to ensuring a reliable feed-stock for continuous biochar production.

On Day 3 of the project audit process, a team from Circonomy - Adrien Humbert and Kul Kauwid - joined activities on the ground. As developers of the DMRV App, they visited the field to observe how the system performs in real conditions and to collect firsthand feedback from farmers, supervisors, and auditors. Their engagement helps ensure the tool is practical, user-friendly, and responsive to on-the-ground needs.

The visit also created space for innovation and forward-thinking around future DMRV enhancements. Through gathering field insights, reviewing workflows, testing assumptions, and identifying areas for improvement, the team will work on refining processes while strengthening data accuracy and efficiency.

This collaborative effort supports continuous improvement and ensures the DMRV system remains effective, reliable, and impactful!

Kongolo Biochar Project Audit - Day 2

On Day 2 of the audit, the CERES CERtification Of Environmental Standards GmbH auditors visited farmers participating in the C-sink model to assess their understanding of the entire biochar value chain.
The visit focused on verifying farmers’ knowledge of the production process, from pyrolysis, mixing, to the final application of biochar in their fields.

These interactions provided valuable insights into knowledge transfer at the grassroots level and highlighted the practical adoption of sustainable practices under the Kongolo Biochar Project.

We are pleased to host a team of auditors from CERES CERtification Of Environmental Standards GmbH as part of the audit exercise for our Kongolo Biochar Project. The audit team, Edith Kembabazi (Uganda) and Florent SO (Burkina Faso), commenced Day 1 with a visit to our Artisan PRO Production Site, Kakamega.

The visit provided an opportunity for the auditors to observe our production processes, assess operational standards, and engage with the team on the ground. It also marks an important step in assessing compliance, quality standards, and the overall performance of the project.

This exercise reflects our commitment to transparency, accountability, and maintaining high-quality standards in our biochar production.

The pictures below show our team actively working on our second testing plot as we undertake hands-on trials to evaluate the effectiveness of biochar in improving crop productivity. These pilots are designed to generate clear, evidence-based insights on whether biochar can significantly enhance yields.

The approach is simple yet powerful: we’ve set up Control and Experimental plots for a side-by-side comparison across our testing sites.

- Control Plot: Crops grown using conventional methods without biochar.
- Experimental Plot: Crops planted with the application of biochar.

This structured comparison allows us to accurately measure differences in crop performance, focusing on yield quantity, plant health, and overall soil improvement.

Through this initiative, we aim to validate biochar as a sustainable soil solution that can boost agricultural productivity, enhance soil health, and support climate-smart farming practices.

The journey to sustainable agriculture is rooted in evidence and this is where it begins!
