Today, Kakamega showed what happens when young people are not just invited to the conversation, but given space to lead it. 🌍✊🏾

We marked International Youth Day 2026 under the theme "Different Contexts, Common Aspirations", bringing together 100 young people, stakeholders and community voices to reflect on the realities, aspirations and opportunities shaping young people's lives.

From powerful stakeholder conversations on how their work is supporting young people, to a thought-provoking theatre performance bringing the theme to life, the day was filled with honest conversations, shared experiences and ideas for action.

We also officially launched Youth Unfiltered 🎉, creating a space where young people can ask uncomfortable questions, challenge assumptions and speak openly about the issues that matter to them.

The day ended with a strong call to action, stakeholder commitments and a press engagement, giving young people and partners a platform to take these conversations beyond the room.

Because different contexts should never limit common aspirations.

Young people are not waiting for the future. They are shaping it now.

Today marks an important step towards strengthening accountability in the fight against gender-based violence.

With support from the Access to Medicine Platform (AtMP), we successfully established the GBV Accountability Coalition, bringing together Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) from Kakamega and Vihiga counties.

This coalition will work together to monitor the implementation of county commitments on GBV prevention and response, generate and share evidence, champion survivor-centred advocacy, and hold duty bearers accountable for delivering on their commitments.

Ending GBV requires more than commitments. It requires action, collaboration, and accountability. By working together, we can help ensure that survivors receive the protection, support, and justice they deserve.

Gender-Based Violence cannot be addressed through awareness alone. True change happens when survivors are empowered with the knowledge, support, and economic opportunities needed to rebuild their lives.

Today, we concluded this week's GBV sensitization forums in Amalemba Scheme, reaching 40 women survivors. During the discussions, many participants, especially domestic workers, shared their experiences of sexual harassment by their male employers. Their stories highlighted the strong connection between economic vulnerability and exposure to abuse.

These conversations reaffirmed an important lesson: awareness without economic empowerment is not enough. As a result, we identified five women from each group who will be trained in peanut butter production and provided with starter tins to help them begin income-generating activities and take steps toward financial independence.

This marks the beginning of a new chapter, moving from awareness to action, and from vulnerability to empowerment. Stay tuned as we walk this journey with these resilient women and support them in building sustainable livelihoods.

Gender-Based Violence thrives in silence, stigma, and limited access to information. That is why we continue creating safe spaces where survivors can learn, speak openly, and access support.

Today, our sensitization forums continued in Shivakala and Majengo slums, reaching a total of 80 women survivors of Gender-Based Violence, with 40 participants in each area. The sessions were facilitated by officers from the Kakamega Gender Desk and the area Assistant Chief, focusing on GBV reporting mechanisms, root causes, and prevention strategies.

Our deliberate inclusion of the Assistant Chief and Gender Desk officers helps bridge the gap between communities and service providers. The Assistant Chief's close relationship with community members fosters trust, while the Gender Desk officers help dispel the misconception that law enforcement is inaccessible or unable to support survivors.

Participants were provided with a safe platform to share their experiences, ask difficult questions, and discuss the barriers they face when reporting GBV cases. Through these conversations, we continue to build awareness, strengthen trust in reporting systems, and empower survivors to seek support and justice.

Gender-Based Violence remains a serious challenge in our communities, with financial dependency identified as a major contributing factor. This week, we are conducting a series of community sensitization forums across Kakamega's informal settlements to strengthen awareness, reporting, and access to support services.

Today, through the Jasiri Program funded by GROOTS Kenya, we engaged 40 GBV survivors in a sensitization forum on the types, root causes, and reporting mechanisms of GBV. Participants shared their experiences and reporting challenges, highlighting the need for continued community awareness and support.

Today, we are asking uncomfortable, provocative, but relevant questions about sexual and reproductive health and rights, consent, bodily autonomy, and the rights of young people.

Topic: Who Decides?? SRHR, Consent and the Rights of Young People

Together, we are challenging myths, confronting stigma, and exploring how informed choices can shape healthier futures for young people.

Because decisions about our bodies should be guided by facts, not fear, myths, or stigma.
