Environmental challenges remain a growing concern for many communities in kakamega, driven by poor waste management practices, blocked drainage infrastructure, and weak policy enforcement. Beyond impacting public health and livelihoods these challenges highlight the need for stronger and unified advocacy.
The Rural Integrated Programme (RUIP) convened diverse stakeholders under the Western Kenya Environmental Defenders Network (WEDN) for a strategic dialogue focusing on CSOs, farmer associations, youth groups and women-led organizations to strengthen sustainable waste management and environmental advocacy across Western Kenya.
The dialogue enabled enabled us to identify environmental hotspots, align priorities and develop a unified advocacy agenda rooted in local realities. There was strong consensus on the need for coordinated action, enhanced accountability and inclusive policy implementation.
The establishment of WEDN marks a significant step toward a coordinated regional platform for climate justice advocacy, fostering collaboration to co-create solutions and strengthen sustainable waste management systems.
