As part of Kakamega peer monitors, we were convened by CABDA-Amref Health Africa in Kenya for Community Led Monitoring (CLM) review meeting. The review objective was on strengthening documentation of outcomes using outcome harvesting approach as well as sharing progress and lessons learned as we continue to empower communities to identify gaps, advocate, improve quality and address accountability deficits.
As we continue to place communities at the Centre of health care, we continued to remind communities on effective use of I-Monitor App System for reporting and adopt chatbot use via 0703371266 for easy reporting on identified issues to improve service delivery in Kakamega County.
We also had an update on DRM advocacy plan with a clear advocacy action plan with identified priorities as Kakamega County.

Day 2 of our engagement with Ni Sisi allowed us to go deeper into understanding movement building, leadership and sustainability at the grassroots level. One of the major highlights was discussing the Foundation and Formation of the Kakamega Ni Sisi Chapter, a step that reflects the growing need for organized citizen participation and collective action within our communities.
We had an important conversation around the survival, financial capability and sustainability of the Chapter. A movement can only remain impactful when it develops strong structures, community ownership, strategic partnerships and sustainable ways of supporting its activities without losing its mission and values.
The discussion reminded us that grassroots organizing is not only about raising voices during moments of crisis, but also about building long-term systems that empower communities, protect civic spaces and create lasting social change.
Lastly as the Chapter came alive it couldn't be without leadership. Therefore, 3 Leaders were selected to help coordinate and guide the Chapter's vision, activities and community engagements. This was not just about choosing individuals, but about strengthening shared leadership, accountability and collective responsibility in advancing people-centered advocacy and civic engagement.

Today's engagement with Ni Sisi was a powerful reminder that real transformation begins when Citizens understand their power, organize collectively and reclaim civic space.
We explored the meaning of social movements as collective efforts by ordinary people coming together to challenge injustice, influence policy and reimagine a more just society. From understanding movement life cycles-crisis,uprising,peak mobilization, contraction, evolution and the "new normal" -to reflecting on how movements build collective identity, strategic action and people power, the lessons were both timely and practical.
Reclaiming the civic space: protecting the rights of citizens to organize ,speak ,participate in public and hold leaders accountable without fear of repression. Grassroots organizations remain critical in this work because they are closest to communities, local realities and lived challenges.
Social movements are not just protests-they are the heartbeat of people's resistance, imagination and hope for better systems. They challenge structural injustices while creating pathways for inclusive governance, accountability and social change.

As we continue building at the Grassroots, collaboration between movements,community-based organizations and citizens will remain essential in shaping a Kenya where public participation is meaningful and people-centred.

This is done with an aim to Form The Ni Sisi Kakamega County Chapter to build a shared understanding of key governance and socio-economic challenges, strengthening collaboration & solidarity amongst civic & community actors, identify shared priorities to leverage on interms of advocacy and civic action and lat the foundation for this Civic Movement in Kakamega County.

As Girls to Women Organization, we joined ICJ Kenya who convened CSOs in Kakamega (22–23 April) for a high-level training on policy advocacy, accountability & public participation in health reforms.

The workshop aimed at strengthening CSO capacity to engage effectively in health governance at both national & county levels.

As CSO's we took time to learn much on different subjects as far as Health Governance is concerned. These included:
1. Health Governance Structures
2. Roles of National and County Government in Health Governance
3. Public Participation in Health Governance
4. Participation Mechanisms and Tools
5.Challenges in the Health Governance Participation
6. CSO's Roles on Health Governance
7. Legal Frameworks/Constitutional Provisions

With new laws like the Social Health Insurance Act & the Primary Health Care Act, there is an urgent need for informed, coordinated & evidence-based civil society engagement.

We developed a practical advocacy action plans to drive accountability & influence health policy processes across counties.

As Girls to Women we proudly joined the transformative Ijue Data Yako III initiative, implemented by ICON Data and Learning Labs in partnership with Amnesty International Kenya.

We participated in the Inception and Orientation Workshop, marking the beginning of a powerful 6-month journey aimed at strengthening Civil Society Organizations across Bungoma, Busia, and Kakamega.
This initiative is focusing on:
📌 Enhancing data awareness
📌 Promoting digital rights
📌 Strengthening data protection practices
📌 Building capacity for evidence-based campaigns.
As Girls To Women Organization, we are excited to not only grow our internal capacity but also cascade this knowledge to other CSOs in Kakamega County, ensuring communities are better informed, protected, and empowered in the digital space.
Together, we are building a future where both the data processers, controllers and data subjects become responsible, their rights are protected, and communities thrive.
