What happens when women are placed at the center of conservation and restoration efforts?

In Sururu Forest, Njoro Sub County, Nakuru, we are witnessing the answer firsthand. Women are not only participating in restoration activities, they are leading change, nurturing ecosystems, strengthening communities, and securing a greener future for generations to come.

By empowering women in conservation, we are restoring more than forests; we are restoring hope, resilience, and sustainable livelihoods.

When women thrive, nature thrives too.

Today marked a significant milestone as we officially launched our tree planting initiative in Sururu Forest.

Together with community members and the Kenya Forest Service, we planted 15,000 indigenous tree seedlings, including Prunus Africana,Syzygium, Markhamia lutea, Juniperus (cedar), podocarpus, olea europea, mimosa among others.

This initiative, a partnership between WWANC and , seeks to restore the degraded Sururu Forest through the planting of 100,000 indigenous trees, 30,000 seedlings in farmlands, while also rehabilitating riparian zones along the Njoro–Kiputunga stream with an additional 20,000 seedlings.

The exercise forms part of our broader commitment to increasing forest cover, supporting Kenya’s goal of growing 15 billion trees by 2030, as well as restoring and protecting the Mau Forest Complex, one of the country’s most vital water towers.

Today, Our team held a successful and impactful meeting with women group leaders from the forest catchment regions of Kakamega and Trans Nzoia, who are benefiting from the revolving loan fund under the program.

This interactive session led by WWANC Co-Directors Dr Stella Wanjala and Rose Wamalwa, offered an opportunity for women to share on the progress, challenges, and achievements experienced through the initiative.

The sessions were also facilitated by two community facilitators, who introduced the Self-Help Group Approach model, allowing the women to learn practical methods of saving, lending, record keeping, and strengthening group sustainability through peer learning and shared experiences.

Participants also shared inspiring stories of growth and resilience, highlighting how the revolving fund has opened business opportunities, improved livelihoods, strengthened economic independence, and enabled them to better support their families and educate their children.

They also noted that through the initiative, most have becomr respected leaders within their villages and communities. The meeting reaffirmed Our commitment to promoting sustainable livelihoods, and women’s empowerment.

WWANC in partnership with Women's Earth Alliance successfully conducted a one-day Climate Change Mitigation and Resilience Training for grassroots women in Ndere, Siaya County, aimed at strengthening community capacity to respond to the growing impacts of climate change.

During the training, participants were introduced to the fundamentals of climate change, its major causes, the effects already being experienced within communities, and the important role women play in advancing climate adaptation and mitigation efforts.

The women were also trained on practical climate-smart solutions, including establishment of tree nurseries, Kitchen gardening for household food security, use of organic fertilizers and adoption of energy-saving cookstoves for sustainable household energy use

To promote hands-on learning, the team led by CLA Nelly facilitated practical demonstrations on the installation and use of energy-saving cookstoves. These clean energy technologies help reduce fuel consumption, lower household costs, and improve health outcomes for families.

Participants were further taken through the Revolving Fund model and basic record-keeping skills to strengthen financial management and support sustainable economic livelihoods.

These interventions are designed to equip women with practical skills that enhance household resilience, improve food security, promote economic empowerment, and contribute to environmental conservation.

The training was also facilitated by Siaya County Government's Department of Agriculture and was attended by church elders and community leaders, whose participation strengthens community support for women-led environmental conservation and sustainable development initiatives.

Women in Water and Natural Resources Conservation (WWANC) proudly joined fellow TerraFund Cohort 3 champions at a peer-to-peer learning workshop organized by World Resources Institute together with impact africa in Laikipia County.

The forum brought together restoration champions from across the Greater Rift Valley who are driving ecosystem restoration and contributing towards the ambitious goal of planting 100 million trees in support of Kenya’s Vision 2030 target of 15 billion trees.

Through insightful knowledge-sharing sessions, participants deepened their understanding of:
Community engagement & safeguards
Monitoring and evaluation
Nursery management
Agroforestry practices

As a proud project partner, WWANC remains committed to restoring 150 hectares of natural forest, riparian areas, and agroforestry landscapes within the Sururu Forest ecosystem. Together, we continue building resilient communities and healthier ecosystems for future generations.
