Greyson's story:
A WAKE-UP CALL ABOUT VIDEO GAMES š® š«¢
I asked my son if I could share his story. Please share in hopes that it could help someone.
It all began in the summer of 2023. My husband had just gotten a new computer, and naturally, our son Greyson asked if he could have the old one. I was excited for himāsomething fun to keep him occupied during the long, hot Florida days. Florida summers here are brutal, and outdoor time is pretty limited.
Greyson dove headfirst into video games. He was thrilled to be downloading new ones, challenging himself to beat levels and build new worlds. Every night at dinner, he would excitedly talk about the games he played and the adventures he had. As a mom of five with one of them just a few months old. So, my days were packed full of the usual chaos and responsibilities. I didnāt pay much attention to how much time Greyson was spending on the computer or what games he was playing.
But then, we began to notice a shift.
Greyson's behavior started changing drastically. He became angry quickly, couldnāt control his temper, clenched his fists, and screamed over small things. It wasnāt like him at all. We eventually discovered he had been playing Roblox and Fortnite for hours on end, every single day that summer.
I remember calling my mom in tears, telling her, āSomething is wrong with Greyson.ā He had started talking about deathāsaying things like, āI wish I could just die.ā His outbursts escalated to threatening and even hurting his siblings. We searched his room and found deeply disturbing drawings: demonic figures, images of dead people, someone with a gun shooting crowds, and even pictures of himself with a muzzle over his mouth.
This broke our hearts.
We reached out to both sets of grandparents and asked them to pray specifically for Greyson and his heart.
My mom gave me the hard truth. āGet rid of the games,ā she said. āTake the computer out of the house. Start praying over him every night. And be ready because when those games are gone, heās going to lose his mind.ā
She was right.
When we finally removed the computer, Greyson spiralled. He became someone we didnāt recognize. I cried to my husband more times than I could count. This wasnāt the little boy we raised.
The outbursts became more intense. He began threatening to hurt himself, saying, terrifying things no parent ever wants to hear. Yes, we had moments of joy in between, but as soon as he asked to play games and we said no, everything unravelled. I have videos of him screaming, crying, his voice sounding completely unlike his own. He would repeat the same sentence over and overāsometimes 40 or 50 times in a row. I truly believe there was a spiritual battle happening around him.
But we didnāt give up.
We kept praying. We spent more time with him, pointing him to Christ. We reminded Greyson every day how loved and important he was, not just to our family, but to this world. My husband had hour-long talks with him multiple times a week, walking him through the same truths again and again.
It took about eight months. Eight long, painful, prayer-filled months. But eventually, Greyson began to return to the joyful boy we knew. He came back to us.
I carry guilt for not noticing sooner. For not setting boundaries. For allowing him to use so much unsupervised screen time. But I share this story in hopes that it helps even just one family.
If your kids play video games, please check in with them. If they have computers or consoles in their rooms, consider moving them. What starts out as innocent fun can quickly become something far more dangerous. These games arenāt just games. theyāre open doors. If your eight-year-old is spending three hours a day playing games where they shoot people in the head, of course itās going to affect their heart and mind.
If you have questions or need someone to talk to, please reach out to me. Iāll help however I can.
The Greyson we know today is nothing like the Greyson we saw during that dark time. And that is only because of God. It was prayer, faith, and relentless love that brought him through.
Today, Greyson loves pizza, Ninja Kids, Dude Perfect, hugging every single person at church on Sundays, and Kate Brentās Sunday school class. In two days, he turns 11, and I thank God every single day that heās still here.
Maybe this story sounds dramatic to you, but I urge you to take a deep dive into Roblox and Fortnite. Look into what your kids are really being exposed to.
Because we almost lost our son that summer.

š SCRIPTURES š
š This is the message we heard from Jesus and now declare to you: God is light, and there is no darkness in him at all.
(I John 1:5)
š Try to help those who argue against you. Be merciful to those who doubt.
Save some by snatching them as from the very flames of hell itself. And as for others, help them to find the Lord by being kind to them, but be careful that you yourselves arenāt pulled along into their sins. Hate every trace of their sin while being merciful to them as sinners
(Jude 1:22-23)
š Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.
(Proverbs 4:23)
š And I said to them, āEach of you, get rid of the vile images you have set your eyes on (so obsessed with), and do not defile yourselves with the idols of Egypt. I am the LORD your God.ā
(Ezekiel 20:7)
š I will refuse to look at anything vile and vulgar. I hate all who deal crookedly; I will have nothing to do with them.
(Psalm 101:3)
š Finally, believers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable and worthy of respect, whatever is right and confirmed by Godās word, whatever is pure and wholesome, whatever is lovely and brings peace, whatever is admirable and of good repute; if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think continually on these things [center your mind on them, and implant them in your heart].
(Philippians 4:8)
š Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you through and through [that is, separate you from profane and vulgar things, make you pure and whole and undamagedāconsecrated to Himāset apart for His purpose]; and may your spirit and soul and body be kept complete and [be found] blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
(I Thessalonians 5:23)
