Kenya has received its first batch of Lenacapavir, a long-acting HIV prevention injection that protects HIV-negative individuals for up to six months with a single dose.
This is a major milestone for HIV prevention in Kenya. Long-acting options like Lenacapavir reduce the burden of daily pill-taking which supports adherence and expand choice especially for young women and key populations who face stigma, access barriers or challenges with consistent daily prevention methods.
Beyond the science, this moment represents progress toward people-centred HIV prevention. It is about dignity, autonomy and giving individuals more control over their health. As Kenya moves forward with rollout, it will be critical to ensure equitable access, clear information, community engagement and youth-led advocacy, so that those who need this innovation most are not left behind.
