Adapting to Climate Change :
‎ Building Resilient Communities

‎Climate change is real, and its impacts are already felt in our farms, rivers, forests, and homes. But together, we can adapt and thrive.

‎Practical steps for adaptation:
‎- Climate-smart agriculture: Use drought-resistant crops, diversify farming, and conserve soil.
‎- Water conservation: Harvest rainwater, protect rivers, and recycle water wisely.
‎- Community resilience: Strengthen local networks, share knowledge, and support vulnerable families.
‎- Ecosystem restoration: Plant trees, protect forests, and safeguard biodiversity.
‎- Education & awareness: Teach youth and communities about climate risks and solutions.

‎Every action counts. By adapting wisely, we not only protect our environment but also secure food, water, and hope for future generations.

‎Together, we can rise above the challenge.

‎Agroforestry is increasingly recognized as a vital climate-smart solution in Kenya and globally, helping farmers adapt to rising temperatures, erratic rainfall, and soil degradation while boosting food security and biodiversity. Current strategies emphasize integrating trees with crops and livestock to reduce vulnerability to droughts and enhance resilience.

‎Climate Change and Agroforestry: Current Situation

‎Key Impacts of Climate Change
‎- Rising temperatures: The past nine years have been among the hottest on record, increasing crop evapotranspiration and stressing water resources.
‎- Erratic rainfall & droughts: Severe droughts in East Africa reduce crop yields and pasture availability, threatening food security.
‎- Soil degradation: Climate change accelerates salinity and nutrient depletion, undermining productivity.

‎Role of Agroforestry
‎- Carbon sequestration: Trees capture and store carbon, mitigating greenhouse gas emissions.
‎- Microclimate regulation: Shade trees reduce heat stress on crops and livestock.
‎- Soil fertility: Leguminous trees improve nitrogen levels, reducing dependence on chemical fertilizers.
‎- Diversified income: Timber, fruits, fodder, and medicinal plants provide alternative livelihoods.
‎- Resilience: Agroforestry systems buffer communities against climate shocks by spreading risk across multiple outputs.

‎ Kenya’s Climate-Smart Agriculture Strategy (2017–2026)
‎- Policy framework: The Ministry of Agriculture and partners (FAO, UNDP, World Bank) promote agroforestry as part of climate-smart agriculture.
‎- Integration goals: Encourage adoption of tree-based farming systems to enhance resilience in arid and semi-arid lands like Kajiado County.
‎- Community empowerment: Training farmers on sustainable practices, water harvesting, and tree-crop-livestock integration.
Challenges Ahead
‎- Adoption barriers: Farmers may lack knowledge, seedlings, or incentives to plant trees.

Mangrove Restoration Story at Mashewa, Tanga Region

Along the coastal land of Mashewa in Tanga Region, the sea once carried stories of decline. Mangrove forests—vital guardians of the shoreline—had been depleted, leaving the coast vulnerable to erosion and the community struggling with dwindling marine resources.
It was here that Matonyok Organization, in collaboration with international partners, began a journey of renewal. The project was funded by Treedom Standard from Italy, and a dedicated team led by Tomaso Son of Tusa worked hand in hand with Matonyok to restore life to the tidal flats.
Community Mobilization
The initiative started by engaging local communities—elders, youth, and fisherfolk—through dialogue and training. They learned how mangroves act as “the lungs of the sea,” protecting the land, nurturing fish nurseries, and sustaining livelihoods. This rekindled a sense of shared responsibility and pride.
Restoration Efforts
Together, the team collected healthy mangrove seedlings and planted them along the coastline. Women’s groups and schoolchildren joined in, turning restoration into a communal celebration. Each seedling symbolized resilience, hope, and a renewed bond between people and nature.
Innovation and Collaboration
With guidance from Treedom Standard and Tomaso’s leadership, the project introduced sustainable monitoring methods—community patrols, bamboo markers, and digital mapping. Alternative livelihoods such as ecoMashem, beekeeping, and sustainable fishing were encouraged to reduce pressure on the mangroves.
Impact and Renewal
Over time, the coastline began to heal. Young mangroves grew strong, their roots weaving natural barriers against erosion. Fish and crabs returned, restoring abundance to the creeks. The community saw firsthand that restoration was not just about trees—it was about securing
