Did you know? Goats and sheep are among the earliest animals ever domesticated by humans, dating back over 10,000 years and research has consistently shown that they remain some of the most resilient and adaptable livestock for smallholder farmers, especially in arid and semi-arid regions?? Well, now you know. Their ability to survive on limited resources, reproduce quickly, and provide multiple benefits makes them a powerful tool in transforming rural livelihoods.

At the Central Rift Community Development Program, we are supporting parents of enrolled children by providing Galla goats and Dorper sheep to strengthen their livelihoods. Many families we work with, face ongoing challenges such as unreliable income, food insecurity, and difficulty meeting essential needs like school fees. By introducing hardy and fast-reproducing livestock, this intervention gives families a practical and sustainable way to generate income, improve household nutrition, and build financial stability over time.

Through this initiative, we expect families to see increased income from the sale of offspring and livestock products, better access to nutritious food through milk and meat, and greater resilience to economic shocks. Ultimately, this contributes to improved school retention, healthier children, and stronger, more self-reliant households.

A powerful milestone was marked for the community of Kampi ya Samaki with the official launch of a transformative fluoride-free water project; an initiative set to restore dignity, improve health, and renew hope. For years, residents have depended on Lake Baringo as their primary source of water. While the lake has supported livelihoods, it has also exposed generations to high fluoride levels, leading to skeletal fluorosis, a condition associated with joint stiffness, bone deformities, and chronic pain. In addition to these health challenges, collecting water from the lake has remained dangerous due to crocodile infestations, making a basic daily need a risky and often frightening task.

This project has been made possible through a strong partnership between ChildFund Kenya, Central Rift Community Development Program, Baringo County Government, Central Rift Valley Water Works Development Agency, DuPont, Davis & Shirtliff, and Hand in Hand East Africa who have come together to deliver a sustainable solution. At the heart of the project is an ultra-filtration and reverse osmosis facility designed to remove excess fluoride and provide safe drinking water to over 20,000 people. Beyond the infrastructure, the project emphasizes long-term sustainability by piping water to 1,500 households,3 schools, and 1 health center, laying the foundation for healthier communities and a more secure future.

As we mark Safe Internet Day 2026, a global initiative dedicated to creating a safer and more empowering digital world for children and young people, this year’s theme, “AI Aware: Safe, Smart, and in Control,” calls on all of us to ensure that children are equipped with the knowledge and skills to navigate an increasingly AI-driven digital environment safely and confidently.

At Central Rift Community Development Program, we recognize that as internet access continues to expand across our communities, so do both the opportunities and the risks facing children online. Through our child protection programming, digital literacy sessions, safeguarding trainings, and community sensitization forums with parents and caregivers, we work to promote responsible internet use, strengthen awareness on online risks, and empower children to speak up when they feel unsafe. We also integrate child online protection into our broader advocacy efforts to ensure that digital safety remains a priority in community spaces.

Safe Internet Day is a reminder that digital safety is not a one-day conversation but a continuous responsibility. As technology evolves, our commitment must evolve with it so that every child is not only connected, but protected, informed, and in control of their digital experiences.

In Marigat, where climate change continues to place immense pressure on agriculture through erratic rainfall, prolonged dry spells, and declining soil productivity, Central Rift Community Development Program (CRCDP), in partnership with KickStart International, trained 72 smallholder farmers on climate-smart agriculture as a practical and sustainable pathway toward resilience. The training focused on equipping farmers with hands-on skills in efficient water use, improved soil management, and adaptive farming practices that enable them to produce more food despite limited resources and increasingly unpredictable weather patterns. To further strengthen adoption and translate knowledge into action, selected farmers were provided with MoneyMaker starter pumps, enabling access to affordable irrigation, reducing overreliance on rain-fed agriculture, and allowing farmers to grow crops more consistently throughout the year. Through this intervention, farmers are better positioned to increase crop yields, stabilize household food supplies, and generate reliable income to support essential needs such as education, nutrition, and healthcare. Beyond immediate livelihood gains, the adoption of climate-smart practices promotes long-term environmental sustainability by conserving water, restoring soil health, and building resilient farming systems that ensure smallholder agriculture in Marigat remains productive and viable for future generations.

This past week we conducted an extensive livestock focused farmers training in collaboration with experts from the county’s Department of Livestock and Agriculture where participants explored in great depth the economic importance of dairy goat breeds such as Galla, Toggenburg and German Alpine as well as Dorper sheep which are highly valued for their resilience, high milk and meat yield, fast growth rates and the strong market demand that makes them reliable sources of income for rural households. Farmers were engaged in practical sessions on understanding different livestock production systems and how to select the most suitable system for their environment, proper housing and routine management practices that enhance comfort and productivity, record keeping for tracking production trends and making informed decisions, and effective kidding and lambing techniques that reduce losses and improve survival rates of young ones. The training further covered essential areas of livestock nutrition and feeding where farmers learned how to formulate balanced rations using locally available feeds to boost milk production and growth performance as well as comprehensive disease and pest control strategies aimed at minimizing morbidity and ensuring healthier herds. A strong emphasis was placed on value chain development where farmers were guided on how to position their milk, meat and breeding stock within competitive markets to increase profitability. To support these efforts a total of 134 farmers received dairy goats and Dorper sheep selected according to their specific climatic conditions to ensure the animals thrive and contribute meaningfully to improved livelihoods and long term economic stability.

In a significant approach to improving the well-being of young people, the Central Rift Community Development Program recently conducted a Sexual and Reproductive Health training that reached 280 children across all our implementation sites. The training equipped the participants with essential knowledge on personal values, healthy relationships, teenage pregnancies and the prevention of unwanted pregnancies, gender roles and stereotypes, substance abuse, and gender based and sexual abuse.

The sessions provided an open and interactive space where children could freely ask questions, express their thoughts, and understand how personal choices affect their health and future. The facilitators guided discussions that helped the participants reflect on common misconceptions, understand the importance of respectful relationships, and build confidence in making informed and responsible decisions.

After the training, all participants received dignity kits which contained important hygiene essentials tailored to support their personal care. The kits were especially helpful for girls who often face challenges in managing their hygiene needs, and they contributed to improved comfort, confidence, and regular school attendance. The distribution of these kits reinforced the overall message of self respect, body awareness, and the importance of maintaining proper hygiene.

This intervention is expected to strengthen knowledge on sexual and reproductive health, reduce vulnerabilities related to early pregnancies, and increase awareness on preventing and reporting abuse. By reaching 280 children across all CRCDP project sites, the training has contributed significantly to nurturing a more informed, confident, and empowered generation.

Over the past week, our organization successfully conducted an intensive entrepreneurship and mentorship training for youths aged 18 to 24 enrolled in our programs. The training aimed to empower young people with practical skills and knowledge to strengthen youth-led businesses and nurture entrepreneurial mindsets. The sessions focused on key areas such as communication skills, decision making, problem solving, and time management, equipping participants with essential tools to manage their ventures more effectively. In addition, the training explored entrepreneurship in depth, with discussions on sourcing for funds, understanding available financing opportunities, and addressing the common challenges faced by new entrepreneurs, particularly those within this age group, such as limited access to capital, lack of mentorship, and navigating early stage business uncertainties. By the end of the week, participants reported improved confidence in business planning and communication, greater awareness of funding options, enhanced teamwork and leadership abilities, and a renewed sense of motivation to implement innovative ideas in their enterprises. This initiative reaffirmed our commitment to nurturing capable, resilient, and forward thinking young entrepreneurs who will drive sustainable change in their communities.

In a significant step towards addressing the persistent health challenges faced by the residents of Lake Baringo and its environs, the Central Rift Community Development Program (CRCDP) joined partners and stakeholders in the groundbreaking ceremony for the Kampi ya Samaki Water Project. The event marked the laying of the foundation for the Kampi ya Samaki Water Treatment Plant, a milestone initiative that aims to provide safe and clean drinking water to communities that have long relied on water from Lake Baringo, which contains high levels of fluoride and poses health risks to residents.
The ceremony was officiated by the Deputy Governor of Baringo County, H.E. Felix Maiyo, who commended the collaborative spirit of all partners and reaffirmed the County Government’s commitment to ensuring sustainable water solutions for its people. The event brought together a strong network of partners including ChildFund Kenya, Central Rift Valley Water Works Development Agency, Baringo County Government, Hand in Hand, Central Rift Community Development Program,DuPont Davis & Shirtliff, and members of the local community. Together, they celebrated the beginning of a project that promises to transform the lives of residents through improved access to clean and safe water.
For many years, communities in Kampi ya Samaki and the surrounding environs nearby areas have depended on untreated lake water for drinking, cooking, and other household needs. This dependence has led to health challenges such as dental and skeletal fluorosis, as well as other waterborne diseases. The new water treatment plant will address these issues by filtering and purifying the water to meet safe consumption standards, offering hope for better health and improved living conditions.
The groundbreaking ceremony was filled with optimism and unity as community members, leaders, and partners came together to witness the start of a project that will not only improve health outcomes but also strengthen livelihoods and promote development across the region. Once completed, the Kampi ya Samaki Water Project will stand as a symbol of partnership, resilience, and the shared determination to ensure that every household has access to safe and clean water.

Did you know a healthy dairy cow can produce over 25 liters of milk a day, while goat’s milk is naturally easier to digest, making it perfect for children and sensitive stomachs? Or that a single hen can lay up to 300 eggs in a year, turning poultry into a steady income stream? With these insights in mind, last week we took farmers through intensive training at A.I.C Cheptebo Rural Development Centre with skilled trainers from the institution. The sessions covered livestock management (feeding, housing, breeding, and disease control for cows and dairy goats), poultry farming (feeding, vaccination, housing, and agribusiness), and smart farm practices (soil fertility, crop rotation, and record-keeping). Beyond the knowledge gained, this training is expected to bring real impact: healthier animals producing more milk and eggs, increased household income from surplus sales, stronger food security and nutrition for families, sustainable farming that preserves soil health, and empowered communities ready to share and multiply these practices. The training concluded on a high note as all 50 farmers were honored with certificates of participation, celebrating their dedication to learning and commitment to transforming their farming practices. Together, we are not just training farmers,we are transforming livelihoods.
