The final day of our training that focused on the Constitution of the group and the strengthening of Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLA) to promote financial empowerment, accountability and sustainable community development. The session aimed at equipping participants with knowledge and practical skills on how to develop strong group leadership structures, effective governance systems and transparent financial management practices within community savings groups.

Facilitators guided participants through the importance of having a well-structured group constitution that clearly outlines the objectives of the group, leadership roles, membership responsibilities, rules and regulations, meeting procedures, savings contributions, loan management and conflict resolution mechanisms. Participants learned that a strong constitution helps promote unity, transparency, discipline and accountability within the group while ensuring smooth operations and equal participation for all members.

The training also focused on strengthening Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLA) as a pathway towards economic empowerment and financial resilience among community members, especially women and youth. Participants were trained on proper savings methods, record keeping, loan issuance procedures, interest management and the importance of trust and collective responsibility within savings groups.

Discussions emphasized how VSLA groups can help members access financial support, grow small businesses, improve household income and respond to emergencies without depending on external financial institutions.
Through interactive discussions and group exercises, participants shared experiences, challenges and success stories related to community savings initiatives. The session encouraged members to work together, maintain transparency and support one another in achieving both individual and group development goals.

The three-day training concluded successfully with participants expressing appreciation for the knowledge and skills gained on unpaid care work, energy-saving jikos and VSLA group management. The training strengthened community awareness, leadership, financial literacy and collective responsibility, leaving participants motivated to implement the lessons learned within their communities for sustainable social and economic transformation.

Day Two of the training organized by Isiolo Voice of Women Network focused on savings through the use of energy-saving jikos as a way of promoting economic empowerment, environmental conservation and healthy living within the community. The session brought together participants from different groups to learn practical and sustainable solutions that can help reduce household expenses and improve family livelihoods.

Facilitators educated participants on the importance of adopting energy-saving jikos to reduce the high cost of cooking fuel such as firewood and charcoal. The training demonstrated how improved cookstoves consume less fuel, save time and reduce pressure on natural resources, therefore contributing to environmental protection and climate change mitigation. Participants learned that the money saved from reduced fuel consumption can be invested in education, small businesses, food security and other household needs.

The session also highlighted the health benefits of using energy-saving jikos, especially the reduction of smoke inside homes which exposes women and children to respiratory diseases. Through practical demonstrations, participants were trained on the proper use, maintenance and efficiency of energy-saving jikos to ensure maximum benefits for households and communities.

Participants actively engaged in discussions by sharing their experiences on fuel costs, environmental challenges and the need for sustainable energy alternatives. The training encouraged community members to become champions of clean energy solutions and advocates for environmental conservation within their respective communities.

Day Two ended successfully with participants appreciating the importance of energy-saving technologies in improving livelihoods, promoting savings and building resilient communities through sustainable environmental practices.

Day One of the the training on unpaid care work organized by Isiolo Voice of Women Network was successfully conducted with active participation from community members, women leaders, youth and stakeholders. The session focused on creating awareness about unpaid care work and its impact on families, women’s economic empowerment and community development. Participants were taken through the meaning of unpaid care work, including household chores, childcare, caring for the sick and elderly, fetching water and firewood, and other responsibilities that are mostly carried out by women and girls without payment or recognition.

The training provided a platform for participants to openly share their daily experiences and challenges related to balancing domestic responsibilities with income-generating activities and leadership roles. Facilitators emphasized the importance of recognizing, reducing and redistributing unpaid care work within households and communities to promote gender equality and social inclusion. Discussions also highlighted the need for men and boys to actively participate in caregiving and household responsibilities in order to build stronger and more supportive families.

Participants further learned about the social and economic effects of unpaid care work, especially how it limits women’s opportunities in education, business, leadership and employment. Through group discussions and practical examples, the training encouraged communities to appreciate caregiving as valuable work that contributes greatly to society and the economy.

The first day concluded with renewed commitment from participants to continue advocating for shared responsibilities, women empowerment and community awareness on unpaid care work. The session was interactive, informative and impactful, laying a strong foundation for the upcoming training days.
