Sokoni Women Development Initiative (SOWETE) was founded with the sole objective of improving the livelihoods of rural women by instituting and initiating development projects that not only generate sustainable incomes for them but also equip them with the knowhow to face challenges that confront them on a day to day basis in a sustainable manner. Health (HIV AIDs, malaria, water borne diseases, like cholera, typhoid etc) and illiteracy. Hunger, disease and poverty stand in their way and because they have no voice, the rural women are affected more than their male counterparts. In a society that has been deeply affected by HIV/AIDS, a key strength of SOWETE has been the ability to bring poor rural women to work on joint projects of mutual benefit as they turn their grief into hope and a better tomorrow thus helping them to grow individually while collaborating together.
