Homa Bay Children's Home Child Welfare Initiative

Homa Bay Children's Home Child Welfare Initiative It was started by the Finnish Missionaries as an orphanage in the year 1965, as they saw a great need among orphaned children in the town.

Due to lack of medical facilities, women were giving birth at home and this led to a high infant mortality rate. Homa bay child welfare initiative was started by the Finnish missionaries as an orphanage in the year 1965, as they saw the great need among orphaned children. Back then, due to lack of medical facilities, women were giving birth at home and this led to the death of many mothers during c

hild birth. Many children were orphaned and as a result an orphanage/small babiesโ€™ shelter was started. Through the years the community based care initiative was adopted gradually taking over from the institutionalized set up thereby living the orphanage as a resource centre to cater for the old orphans. The project aims at strengthening the existing resources and to provide coping mechanisms for the orphaned children and families. The project is located in Homabay town with a population of 62,519. The area poverty rate stands at 50.2% with age dependency rate of 100:107. Majority of the inhabitants in the area are from the Luo-community who embraces polygamy as their culture which has contributed to the vulnerability of many children.
