Tuwape Tumaini Children's Foundation Our Children, Our Future
we give them hope and a purpose for life. Tuwape Tumanini has a rich history working with children and youth since 1996.

The Children’s Hope Home was founded by the directors Lucy and Duncan Ndegwa who have always had a passion for advocating for disadvantaged children and youth. While taking care of there own family, Lucy and Duncan would spend endless nights and early mornings on the streets teaching, talking, laughing, and sharing the love of God with the children, giving them hope for a better future. One day Lu

cy and Duncan invited the street youth to her home for the holidays and with this the children’s home was born. With the creation of the Children’s Hope Home, many more children and youth found a new place to call home. Lucy and Duncan took on the well-being and nurturing of their new family and with this came the responsibility to expand the home and the vision to support children and youth in need, as a result Tuwape Tumaini Children’s Foundation was established.

In March, our weltwärts volunteers took part in their mid-term seminar.
The seminar offered space to pause, reflect on their experiences so far, and gather new energy for the months ahead.
Together with the host family, the children and youth, and our team, they looked back on the past months: on moments of learning, challenges, growth, and everyday life at Children’s Hope Home.
We shared meaningful conversations, spent joyful time together, and are grateful for the openness and dedication our volunteers bring into our community.
They are now looking forward to the remaining time with renewed motivation. ❤️

Yesterday we had a nice surprise: our four volunteers bought ice cream for all the children and teenagers in our home 🍦✨ Many didn’t know about it – and suddenly everyone had an ice cream.

Even though the weather is currently cooler and rainy, everyone still enjoyed it and the little change of routine was very welcome.
Thank you to our volunteers ❤️

During our Christmas/New Year celebration in Gilgil, we didn’t only celebrate together — we also shared clothing.
We receive many clothing donations from Kenyans. We can’t use everything at the Home, so during the celebration we passed on good-quality clothes to people in the surrounding community.

Thank you to everyone who gives, shares, and makes this possible ❤️✨

In the last posts, we shared how many children we currently have in Preprimary, Primary and Secondary school.

And even if the monthly school fees per child don’t look like much at first — together they add up. School fees alone come to around 800,000 KES per year (≈ €$6.200).

And that is only school fees — not including uniforms, stationery, shopping, transport, or other school essentials.

If you’d like to support education long-term, you can do so through a monthly partnership. It helps us cover these ongoing costs reliably. Send us a DM and we’ll share the details. ❤️

15 of our teens are currently in secondary school 🏫

A quick note for context: Kenya is currently running two school systems in parallel, because the old system is being phased out while the new one is introduced step by step. Only the last three cohorts are still learning under the old system. At Children’s Hope Home, 14 of our teens are still in the old system, while one teen is already in the new system in Senior Secondary (Grades 10–12).

Also, 9 of our teens are in a boarding school. Many secondary schools in Kenya are boarding schools. And boarding is more than just school fees — students often have to bring many items themselves, for example a mattress, bucket, wash basin, blankets and other basics (depending on the school).

What do secondary school costs look like for us (approx.)?
• Day school: about 2,000 KES/month (≈ $15/month) + uniforms & stationery
• Boarding school: about 5,300 KES/month (≈ $41/month) + uniforms, stationery, shopping & transport
A secondary school uniform can be around 15,000 KES (≈ $116) — depending on the school and grade.

11 of our children are in primary school, and 2 are in junior secondary — which is still often taught within the primary school setting under the current system.

In Kenya, primary runs from Grade 1 to Grade 6, and junior secondary from Grade 7 to Grade 9.

What do primary school costs look like for us?
Fees are currently about 800 KES per child per month (≈ $6.20/month). On top of that, there are uniforms and stationery, which vary depending on the school and grade. A primary uniform can be roughly around 7,000 KES (≈ $54.30), depending on the school.

Five of our children are currently in pre-primary school.

In Kenya, pre-primary usually includes PP1 and PP2 — two years before children move on to Grade 1. Many start around age 4 in PP1 and join Grade 1 around age 6.

What do pre-primary costs look like for us?
School fees are currently about 1,000 KES per child per month (≈ $7.76 / month). On top of that, there are uniforms and stationery, which vary depending on the school and grade.

If you’d like to support education long-term, you can do so through a monthly partnership. DM us for details ❤️

New year, new numbers ✨

Right now we care for around 45 children and young people at our home in Gathiga — numbers fluctuate as children arrive from the streets and others move on.

In the next posts we’ll break it down: Preschool, Primary, Secondary and University — and what school costs can look like in Kenya.

If you’d like to support education long-term, a monthly partnership can help cover school costs. DM us to learn more ❤️

Sometimes we just need a day to say “thank you” — and laugh together ❤️
Our team from Gathiga & Gilgil, our volunteers, and friends of Hope Home spent a day at Bamboo Dam: great food, boating, swings, a bouncy castle, and ziplining.

Their dedication, patience, and hard work make our daily work possible. Thank you for all you do ✨

In December, we celebrated Koi finishing preschool.
Now it was time: her first day of 1st grade ✨

A new timetable, new impressions — and a big step that is built from many small moments: showing up, learning, growing.

We’re proud of you, Koi ❤️

✨ Happy New Year! ✨

We started the year the way we love most — together.
Today, we shared a late Christmas and New Year’s meal in Gilgil, welcoming around 300 people for a warm meal and time together.

After the joyful Christmas celebration with street-connected families in Nairobi, it was important for us to also celebrate with the community in Gilgil.
Because even on New Year’s Day, our work doesn’t pause — and neither does our commitment to stand with the people we support.

Here’s to a new year filled with hope, community, and shared moments. 💛
