Fires in Kenyan school dormitories have been a recurring issue over the years i.e.(September 2024 β Hillside Endarasha Primary School, Nyeri-21 fatalities, 2017 β Moi Girls High School, Nairobi- 10 deaths, 2001 β Kyanguli Secondary School, Machakos-67 fatalities).
Research has shown that the fires were caused by a variety of factors, including:
β’Student Unrest: One of the primary causes of dormitory fires is student unrest, which often results from grievances related to school policies, harsh disciplinary measures, poor food quality, or academic pressure. Some students set fires as a form of protest.
β’ Poor Electrical Wiring: Faulty or substandard electrical installations in dormitories can lead to short circuits, causing fires. Overloading electrical systems by using unauthorized gadgets can also contribute to this.
β’ Negligence or Accidents: Accidental fires can occur due to negligence, such as leaving candles, matches, or stoves unattended, especially in schools with inadequate lighting or heating.
β’ Arson: In some cases, fires are deliberately set by individuals with malicious intent, whether due to personal grudges, competition between schools, or external provocations.
β’ Inadequate Fire Safety Measures: Many schools in Kenya lack proper fire safety equipment, like extinguishers, alarms, and accessible fire exits. This exacerbates the impact of fires when they occur.
β’ Poor Infrastructure: Some dormitories are overcrowded, poorly ventilated, and constructed with highly flammable materials, increasing the risk of rapid fire spread.
β’ Drug and Alcohol Abuse: Substance abuse among students can lead to irresponsible behavior, including the deliberate or accidental setting of fires.
β’ Examination Pressure: In some instances, students fearing failure or being overwhelmed by academic pressure may resort to extreme measures, including arson, to avoid exams.
The following measures must be adhered to in order to prevent reoccurrence;
β’Ensure proper and routine inspection of electrical wiring and appliances to prevent short circuits and overloads.
β’ Ban unauthorized use of electrical devices like heaters or kettles in dormitories, which lead to accidental fires.
β’ Equip schools with fire extinguishers, fire blankets, and smoke detectors in dormitories, classrooms, and other key areas.
β’ Install fire alarms that can alert students and staff quickly in case of a fire outbreak.
β’ Ensure dormitories have multiple exits (3 doors) and that there are no barred windows, allowing easy escape during emergencies.
β’Use non-flammable materials in dormitory construction and conduct regular safety drills to educate students on evacuation procedures
β’ Strictly follow boarding school guidelines, such as limiting dormitory capacity to avoid overcrowding and ensuring the infrastructure adheres to fire safety standards
β’ Train school staff and students on fire prevention techniques and proper responses during emergency
β’Conduct regular fire safety audits
