Today marks the first day of Mental Health Awareness week here in the UK, a perfect time for us to spotlight why we provide free counselling and wellbeing support alongside vocational training for Seed of Hope students.

The truth is: access to skills training alone is not enough to break cycles of poverty and exploitation.

Growing up facing food insecurity, poverty and inequality is traumatic. Many Seed of Hope students have lost one or both parents. Some have grown up amongst domestic violence or substance abuse, often brought on by the strain of generational poverty.

The local experts at our partner-NGO understand that no matter how driven a young person may be to study and gain skills to get a job or set up a small business, if there is no support for their mental health they are unlikely to be emotionally able to concentrate, turn up each day and take action.

Skills training could be wasted, through no fault of the student, if it is not paired with wellbeing provision.

For the amazing graduate quoted above, counselling was the key to unlocking their infinite potential. A Fashion & Fabric Design graduate, they told the team:

"Compared to my life before Seed of Hope, I now feel happier, more confident, and deeply fulfilled. Once overwhelmed by stagnation and self-doubt, I now wake up with a sense of purpose and vision."

We could not be prouder of their bravery in accepting counselling support and we wish them the very best with their future as a clothes maker and designer.

We are so excited to share that our partner-NGO was chosen as the official charity partner of Future Hospitality Summit Africa (FHS) 2026.

Delegates in the hospitality sector from all over the world listened to Seed of Hope Executive Director Mary Mwangi introduce Seed of Hope, sharing our ethos that, like seeds, young people can flourish if they are supported with the right conditions!

They were delighted to receive a $5,000 donation from FHS (see giant cheque held by Programme Manager Florence Olwenge) and to make lots of new contacts in the sector. A group of Seed of Hope teachers, staff and students also took part in the FHS charity relay, raising further awareness of Seed of Hope and bonding as a team!

Sometimes statistics really tell a story. There is a reason Seed of Hope has such an outstanding completion rate.

The local experts understand that providing young people with an opportunity to get a qualification is great, but not enough. That learning must be offered alongside wellbeing and practical support, so young people have the best chance of being able to focus and graduate.

This means:
- a free lunch for all
- free counselling offered to all
- free period packs for women and girls
- free childcare vouchers for young mothers

Our unique model is so successful that the local experts at our partner-NGO are teaching it to other educational institutions in Kenya, reaching around 3,000 additional young people as a result!

A huge factor in the statistically proven success of the Seed of Hope programme is the care and dedication of the local experts who deliver it.

You can see quite clearly from this candid photo of Florence Olwenge, Programme Manager, that there is a deep and genuine connection between the staff and the students.

This is one of the big reasons we believe in community-led development. Young people in Kenya facing poverty and exploitation deserve to receive support from people who truly understand the challenges they are facing.

That means local people, with local expertise, not the best intentions of us here in the UK.

A lovely shot of Seed of Hope Nairobi's young mothers receiving their monthly childcare vouchers.

Young mothers want to learn too, and must be supported to focus on their learning. Knowing their children are being safely looked after, these young women can absorb themselves in their studies, building a path out of poverty for themselves and their children.

Recently, our partner-NGO held a learning session on periods for all female students, giving them the opportunity to ask questions and get to deeply understand menstrual health.

All female Seed of Hope students are provided with free period products so they never need to miss a class, but education such as this is a vital addition.

These young women can share their learnings with their daughters, siblings and communities, reducing stigma, misinformation and shame that could hold women and girls back from reaching their full potential.

Knowledge is power.

We are so thrilled that a young woman has enrolled to study Motor Vehicle Mechanics at Seed of Hope Nairobi!

Julia (name changed) is enjoying getting stuck into her 12 month course, working alongside her male classmates.

We are passionate about encouraging girls and young women to study whatever excites them the most, supporting them to ignore outdated gender stereotypes.

You can do it, Julia!

We are so excited to share that December's NITA (National Industrial Training Authority) exam results are out for Seed of Hope Class of 2025, who graduated in January.

Programme Manager Florence Olwenge proudly messaged our team with the results, saying:

"Our students have performed excellently. Out of 191 candidates, 156 passed, with 81 achieving First Class and 75 obtaining an Ordinary Pass... Special congratulations to Nairobi's [Hair and Beauty graduates], where all students attained First Class, an outstanding achievement!"

AMAZING results! These nationally recognised qualifications will unlock many job and further education doors for these inspiring young people!
