Today marks the first day of Mental Health Awareness week here in the UK, a perfect time for us to spotlight why we provide free counselling and wellbeing support alongside vocational training for Seed of Hope students.
The truth is: access to skills training alone is not enough to break cycles of poverty and exploitation.
Growing up facing food insecurity, poverty and inequality is traumatic. Many Seed of Hope students have lost one or both parents. Some have grown up amongst domestic violence or substance abuse, often brought on by the strain of generational poverty.
The local experts at our partner-NGO understand that no matter how driven a young person may be to study and gain skills to get a job or set up a small business, if there is no support for their mental health they are unlikely to be emotionally able to concentrate, turn up each day and take action.
Skills training could be wasted, through no fault of the student, if it is not paired with wellbeing provision.
For the amazing graduate quoted above, counselling was the key to unlocking their infinite potential. A Fashion & Fabric Design graduate, they told the team:
"Compared to my life before Seed of Hope, I now feel happier, more confident, and deeply fulfilled. Once overwhelmed by stagnation and self-doubt, I now wake up with a sense of purpose and vision."
We could not be prouder of their bravery in accepting counselling support and we wish them the very best with their future as a clothes maker and designer.
