Through play, children can build the skills they need to cope with stress, strengthen relationships, and improve their emotional well-being.
Our psychosocial support team in Ifo 2 in Dadaab Refugee Camp facilitated a session with 25 children using Take 5, a series of simple, structured, play-based activities that help children manage stress, regulate their emotions, build resilience, and develop positive social connections.
During the session, children took part in the Blindfold Cone Challenge, where one child was blindfolded while teammates guided them with verbal instructions to place a cone inside a marked circle. The activity encouraged trust, listening, communication, concentration, and teamwork. They also participated in a circle team-building energizer which is a fun group activity involving coordinated movement and games that promoted confidence, cooperation, inclusion, and positive peer interaction.
Take 5 is an evidence-based approach which equips non-clinical frontline workers with practical, play-based tools to support children's mental health and psychosocial well-being. Our psychosocial support staff were trained by UNICEF Kenya to deliver these sessions, creating safe and engaging spaces where children can learn healthy coping skills while simply being children.
This work is made possible with the support of European Union Humanitarian Aid and in partnership with the Refugee Protection Consortium.
