Dadaab was initially established as a temporary haven for some 90,000 refugees fleeing the 1991 Somalia civil war. It is now a bustling commercial hub, boasting cinemas, hotels, factories, Schools, universities and soccer leagues. For over ten years, I was among those who called Dadaab home after fleeing Somalia as a child. I lived and worked in the camp and made many friends. More than 25 years o
f existence, Dadaab has produced inspiring individuals including diplomats, ministers, lawyers, doctors, actors and award-winning journalists. From Somalia's youngest minister to America's first female Somali-American legislator to Canada's immigration minister, all have their roots in Dadaab.
