Nasirumbi Education Fund

Nasirumbi Education Fund The Nasirumbi Education Fund poverty, early marriage/ pregnancy, child labor, adult illiteracy, etc.) NEF is a fiscally-sponsored project of the Zawadisha Fund.

The idea of the Nasirumbi Education Fund began when Jessica, under the auspices of University of Amsterdam and the Kenya-based CABE, carried out her graduate school research in Busijo Sub-location in 2011 and the community asked her to help promote girl-child education. This area near Lake Victoria has some of the brightest students in Kenya, but high dropout rates due to inter-related socio-econo

mic and cultural factors (i.e. prevent many children – especially girls – from finishing school. With generous donations by family, friends and acquaintances Mrs. Nagtalon, the NEF was launched in April-May 2012 with a pilot scholarship program at a secondary school in Busijo, Kenya near Lake Victoria. The program currently supports high school and college-bound girls with tuition assistance, new school uniforms and shoes, and textbooks. In turn, the scholarship beneficiaries, the school and their families are challenged to take up activities that give back to their communities, help build leadership qualities and livelihood skills for viable futures.

As students returned to school this week, education costs are top of mind for families and make up a huge chunk of their income. According to a recent World Remit study, "education cost for most households in Kenya is at 1,054.31 percent, or approximately 10 times their average monthly household income." Organizations like NEF play a vital role to help families meet education costs.

Study shows households spend 10 times their monthly income on education

We send best wishes to NEF university students - Lydia, Alice and Damaris - who are in their semester final exams. We know with your hard work and determination, you will be successful. We also express gratitude to our donors who provide financial support so our students can stay in school and focus on their studies.

Lydia, a 2nd year student undertaking a bachelor’s degree in Special Needs Education at the University of Eldoret, has this to say about NEF support:

"NEF has been of great support in my life, particularly in my academic journey, paying my fees and accommodation in time of real need. My family couldn’t raise the university fees, but with the help of NEF, my academic journey has been smooth due to their financial support. NEF is such a fortune in my life that I don’t underestimate. My family and I are grateful. Thank you, NEF, for being my destiny helper."

NEF STUDENT HIGHLIGHT: “My name is Spencer, I am 18 years old. I come from Bumbe Village in Kenya. In my family, we are twelve boys and two girls. When I’m not in school, I help my mother to do some work in the farm (shamba) and other activities. My desired future career is to become a teacher. My goal is to go to university and study well so that I can achieve my career and that I can become an important person in the future who can help other people.

Before I became a NEF beneficiary, I was struggling in school to learn because I did not have all school requirements like a proper uniform and also I was sent by the principal to go home and come back to school with school fees. From NEF support, I have benefited (from) things like a uniform, which has made me be comfortable in class and continue with my studies, and the solar (lamp) has helped me to study when I’m at home.

I would like to thank NEF donors for (the) good thing that they have provided for me so that I can pass (my) exam. Before NEF provided me (with) their support, my life was too tough, especially when I was in school because my parents were not able to pay for my school fees and all school requirements. When NEF supported me, my life was improved and in school I was comfortable to learn. NEF donors please continue with that spirit of supporting students in school and continue with supporting the boy child as (the) girl child because we are all equal."

WHAT INSPIRES YOU TO GIVE THIS ? One of NEF's donors for over 12 years had this to say:
"Education opens doors of opportunity for students. Since past NEF-sponsored students have been successful in completing their primary and secondary education and have moved on to college or trade schools, the support network that has been developed is working. Also, hearing how much the motivated students appreciate the support so that they can stay in school is inspiring! The opportunity to make a direct impact on a child's future through education and to help them achieve their dream is an honor and a blessing!"
