Under the 2026 International Day of Older Persons theme, “The Age of Longevity: Rethinking Systems for Longer Lives,” ichild Africa calls upon the County Government of Busia, civil society organizations, community leaders, families and individuals to take deliberate action towards improving the lives of older persons.

Let us strengthen access to healthcare, social protection and age-friendly services while combating neglect, abuse and discrimination.

Organizations should invest in sustainable programmes, communities should embrace intergenerational solidarity, and individuals should offer their time, resources and companionship.

Longer lives must mean better lives. Together, let us build a Busia where every older person lives with dignity, security, love and respect.

As we commemorated the International Day of Older Persons, we were delighted to witness Mundika Special School extend community service to the place as part of commemorating their Deaf Awareness Week, which was observed in September.

This beautiful gesture reminds us that disability is not inability, and inclusion is not charity, it is a right. Children with hearing impairments have talents, abilities and hearts ready to serve humanity. They deserve opportunities to participate, contribute and be recognized as equal members of society.

At ichild Africa, we believe in a society where no child is left behind, every ability is celebrated, and intergenerational solidarity brings us closer together. Let us nurture a culture where children, persons with disabilities and older persons are treated with dignity, respect and love.

On this International Day of the Girl Child, let us commit to protecting every girl, keeping her in school, ending child marriage, and creating safe spaces where she can thrive. Every girl deserves dignity, equal opportunities, and the freedom to dream and achieve her full potential. When we protect a girl, we protect a generation; when we invest in her, we invest in the future.

Sometimes children carry stories they are afraid to tell, fears they cannot name, concerns they don't know how to share, and things they know but would never wish anyone to know they know.

Creating safe spaces means giving them the freedom to speak without judgment, listen without dismissing them, and assuring them that their voices matter. Every child deserves a trusted adult, a listening ear, and a safe place to be heard.

Because sometimes, listening is the first step to protecting a child.

Today, we had the privilege of visiting St. Paul Amerikwai Primary School in Teso South Sub-County, where we engaged Grade 8 and 9 learners in a meaningful mentorship session.

We talked about mental health, exam preparedness, STEM subjects, focus, discipline, hard work, and making choices that protect their future. We also addressed the dangers and consequences of drug abuse, how truancy affects learning outcomes, the importance of sexual purity, and what learners should do and where they can report when they experience or witness abuse — including the 112, 116 and 1195 GBV toll-free lines.

What touched us most was hearing directly from the learners. Some girls asked for sanitary pads, while some boys requested boxers, a powerful reminder that sometimes, supporting education also means responding to the basic needs that affect a child's dignity, confidence and ability to learn.

At ichild Africa, we believe that every child deserves to be heard, protected, mentored and given an opportunity to thrive.

Today was not just about speaking to learners, it was about listening, empowering and reminding them that their dreams are valid and their future matters.
