Help for Your Child with a Disability β€” Know the Support Available

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

If your child has a disability, there are government services and support programmes that are available. Here's how to get started:

βœ… Step 1: Have Your Child Assessed
Take your child to a public hospital for a medical assessment by the appropriate healthcare professionals. The assessment helps determine your child's disability and support needs.

βœ… Step 2: Register with the National Council for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD)
After the assessment, apply for NCPWD registration through eCitizen or visit the relevant registration office with the required documents, including your child's passport-size photo and medical assessment report.

πŸ’™ Once Registered, Your Child or Family May Be Eligible For:
βœ”οΈ Cash transfer support (subject to government eligibility criteria)
βœ”οΈ Free or subsidized assistive devices such as wheelchairs, hearing aids, callipers, prostheses, and other mobility aids
βœ”οΈ Education support, including assistance with school fees and learning materials where applicable
βœ”οΈ Economic empowerment programmes, including Tools of Trade for eligible youth and adults with disabilities
βœ”οΈ Referrals to rehabilitation, therapy, and other support services

🀝 Support for Caregivers
The law increasingly recognizes the vital role of caregivers. As parents and caregivers, you deserve information, guidance, and inclusion in programmes that strengthen families caring for children with disabilities.

🧑 Wednesday Caregiving Tip: The Power of Home Therapy

Every child with a disability has a unique potential that grows through consistent support and encouragement. Home therapy requires no special equipment or expenseβ€”just intentional daily practice.

βœ… Support age-appropriate movement (sitting, standing, walking) with gentle assistance.
βœ… Build communication skills through talking, singing, reading, and play.
βœ… Celebrate small milestones; progress, however gradual, is still progress.
βœ… Keep a consistent daily routine to help your child feel secure and learn effectively.
βœ… Consult a therapist or health worker periodically to ensure exercises match your child's needs.
βœ… Prioritize your own wellbeingβ€”a supported caregiver provides better care.

As caregivers, we are our children's first teachers and strongest advocates. Together, we build a community where every child has the opportunity to thrive.

"One Child, One Voice" β€” why fragmented advocacy fails children with disabilities

A child with a disability doesn't experience "the school," "the clinic," and "the community" as separate systems. To them, it's just... life. One day.

But too often, the adults meant to support that child work in silos:
β€’ Schools blame lack of resources
β€’ Health facilities blame late referrals
β€’ Local leaders blame budget allocation
β€’ Parent groups feel unheard by all three

Meanwhile, the child waits.

Inclusion isn't the job of one organisation, one ministry, or one parent group. It's a shared responsibility and it only works when we stop talking past each other and start talking to each other.

This is why unified advocacy matters. When schools, health workers, county government, and caregiver groups speak with one voice, policies move faster, resources stretch further, and no child falls through the cracks between institutions.

πŸ“ What would it look like if every one of us sat at the same table, not to protect our turf, but to protect a child's future?

πŸ’™ Hope on Wheels: Transforming the Lives of Children With Disabilities.

We sincerely thank the Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI), for donating assistive devices to our children with disabilities. These are more than equipment β€” they are tools of dignity, independence, and opportunity.

Special appreciation to APDK Busia, NCPWD for spearheading this life-changing initiative. Because of your effort, many children will now access education, healthcare, and social participation more fully.

As parents and caregivers, we have seen firsthand how a wheelchair, walker, or hearing aid can transform a child's life and restore hope to an entire family. πŸ’™

Yet the need remains great.
Many children are still waiting.

We call upon well-wishers, businesses, faith communities, development partners, and individuals of goodwill to join us. Your support Financial, material, or through advocacy β€” can open doors for a child who is still waiting for their turn.

No child should be left behind simply because they lack the resources to thrive.

πŸ’™ Support disability inclusion.
πŸ’™ Empower a child.
πŸ’™ Strengthen a family.
πŸ’™ Transform a future.
