Kudos to Hon. Maina Kuria, MCA Marachi West for the incredible support extended last month to Mama Hellen Anyango’s family.

Through his leadership and collaboration with community efforts, all her children were admitted to school with full-year fees paid—and beyond that, she also received a business starter kit to begin rebuilding her livelihood.
This is what holistic, people-centered leadership looks like: not just responding to need, but restoring dignity and creating a pathway to stability.

At Kakaamua Group , this is exactly the vision we champion:

Because when vulnerable households destabilize in times of crisis, the community must rise, so we leverage community capital to bolster households, keep children in school, and build sustainable livelihoods for women.

We proudly recognize him as our Community Champion of the Month.

Unlike traditional interventions that end at response, this is what it looks like to walk with a household toward stability.

A Nation Between Drought and Floods: Kenya's Food Crisis Can No Longer Be Ignored

At the core of household resilience is one fundamental truth—food security.
In our work, we engage directly with households, and we see the reality behind the statistics. Hunger is not abstract. It is lived daily in homes where families are forced to make impossible choices between survival and dignity.
You cannot build resilient or transformed households on empty plates.

As Kenya grapples with the dual challenges of drought and floods, the growing food crisis is not just an environmental issue but a constitutional one too. The right to adequate food is guaranteed, yet many continue to fall through the cracks of weak and overstretched social protection systems.

We stand with the Right to Food Coalition in calling for urgent, accountable, and people-centered action.
Resilience cannot be spoken into existence but must be supported, funded, and protected.

As anchored in the of Kenya 2010, Article 43(1)(c) affirms that “every person has the to be free from hunger, and to have adequate food of acceptable quality.” This means food must be available, accessible, adequate, and sustainable for every household.

At Kakaamua Group, we continue translating this constitutional promise into practical action. Yesterday, through community capital, local fundraising, and the generosity of well-wishers, we planted five varieties of local vegetables as part of a household kitchen garden intervention. This is one of the ways we are strengthening , , and .

Our work also aligns with global commitments under Sustainable Development Goal 1 and Sustainable Development Goal 2, recognizing that building livelihoods and local food production at the household level is key to ending poverty and hunger. Small, community-driven solutions continue to make a meaningful difference.

Following the dissemination and validation forum hosted by Tisa Kenya (The Institute for Social Accountability) at the Swiss-Belinn Hotel in partnership with Welthungerhilfe (WHH) and Suncsakenya (Scaling Up Nutrition Civil Society Alliance-Kenya), important discussions emerged on the need for gender-transformative approaches in agri-food systems—particularly addressing time poverty, resource inequality, and limited access to productive assets for women.

These reflections strongly resonate with the realities we continue to see on the ground in households recovering from crisis.

At KAKA AMUA , we have begun translating these insights into practical, household-level interventions. Through the generosity of well-wishers, this family has received a promise of local vegetable seeds to support immediate food production. As part of strengthening household resilience and advancing the , we have already begun land preparation in readiness for planting indigenous vegetables.

This small but meaningful step seeks to ensure the household moves away from nights sustained only by sugarless black tea or porridge, and instead begins rebuilding nutritional security through their own production. Kitchen gardens remain one of the most accessible entry points for vulnerable households to regain dignity, improve nutrition, and reduce food insecurity.

Our approach aligns with the principles discussed during the Agri-food Systems dialogue: empowering households to identify practical solutions that address inequality and strengthen resilience. By supporting land access, seed provision, and community solidarity, we aim to ensure that vulnerable women-led households can transition from survival to stability.

We remain grateful to all partners and well-wishers who continue to support this journey of rebuilding dignity and food security.

As we mark this season, we are reminded that many women in our communities continue to carry the quiet burden of rebuilding households after crisis.

Across parts of Busia County, we often see a gap in interventions—systems respond to incidents, but the long-term stability of the household is left to the resilience of the mother.
Because when vulnerable households destabilize in times of crisis, the community must rise, so we leverage community capital to bolster households, keep children in school, and build sustainable livelihoods for women.

Since January, well-wishers have helped us raise a little over KSh 14,000, which we stretched to ensure five children were admitted into new schools with uniforms, books, and partial fees covered.

However, the journey is not complete. One of the children, M, was recently sent home over a fees balance while awaiting the National Government Constituencies Development Fund bursary, and there is concern she may miss her exams if the balance is not addressed.

We are also seeking support to help the mother start a small business starter kit so she can begin rebuilding household stability. As we reflect on women’s empowerment this month, we invite well-wishers to stand with us—because strengthening one household strengthens the entire community.
