Every day, our local communities around the Lake Victoria Basin in Samia and Budalangi, Busia county continue to face growing ecological challenges.
Unsustainable/Illegal fishing, rising water levels, harmful algal blooms, water hyacinth, pollution, sand harvesting and the degradation of wetlands are becoming more common.
At the same time, we're slowly losing something just as important, the connection between people and nature. With each generation, that bond continues to fade, and so does our sense of responsibility to protect the environment.
The health of Lake Victoria is closely tied to the wellbeing of the people who depend on it. When the lake suffers, so do livelihoods, food security, biodiversity, and the future of our communities.
The choices we make today matter a lot and by protecting our environment, restoring ecosystems, and using our natural resources responsibly, we can strengthen livelihoods and leave a healthier Lake Victoria Basin for the generations that come after us.
Our future depends on what we choose to protect today.
