Sengwer Culture

As part of the World Heritage Volunteers (WHV) programme in Kakamega, we explored the rich heritage of the Sengwer Indigenous community, whose traditional homeland is closely associated with the Cherangany Hills and Embobut Forest in western Kenya. Their history reflects a deep relationship between people, forests and natural resources.

We learned about their *traditional ecological knowledge*, including sustainable forest use, hunting and gathering, farming, herbal knowledge and *beekeeping*, which has been an important part of Sengwer livelihoods and cultural identity. Traditional knowledge is passed through *elders, oral history, storytelling, ceremonies and community practices*. We got to experience first hand the rite of passage process the different music sang during the session .

Celebrating Indigenous Peoples’ Day in Kakamega!

We joined Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology for a vibrant celebration graced by the Vice Chancellor. The day brought together culture, conservation and indigenous knowledge from planting 2,500 trees at a special school to experiencing the rich rhythms of Isukuti dance*, rooted in the Idakho and Isukha communities of the Luhya people.

We explored how Isukuti rhythms differ across weddings, funerals, initiation ceremonies and bullfighting traditions. Most importantly, we developed a strategic partnership between KVSO, the County Government of Kakamega and Masinde Muliro University to promote indigenous knowledge, empower indigenous communities and strengthen the preservation of the Kakamega Tropical Rainforest. 🌍

UNESCO World Heritage Volunteers Programme in the Kakamega Tropical Rainforest began with pruning seedlings at the Kenya Forest Service tree nursery before exploring the forest to learn about indigenous tree species, their medicinal value, and their importance to local communities. We wrapped up the day at Muliro Farmers, where we discovered how indigenous trees are used in herbal medicine and value-added products, highlighting the link between conservation, culture and sustainable livelihoods.

The 2026 Kakamega Tropical Rainforest World Heritage Volunteers Programme is officially underway. We kicked off with courtesy visits to the Kakamega County Department of Culture and the Kenya Forest Service, our valued co-hosts, before visiting the inspiring Jenga Village in Musoli. There, volunteers learned about sustainable farming practices and a community-led feeding programme that is creating a brighter future for local children. Here's to a journey of learning, cultural exchange, environmental conservation and meaningful impact.
