CUEA Hosts 11th KCCB Commission for Education and Religious Education Conference

The Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA) has on Tuesday, Aug 4th welcomed church leaders, Catholic school principals, and education stakeholders for the 11th Edition of the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB) Commission for Education and Religious Education (CERE) Conference at the Pope Paul VI Learning Resource Centre (LRC) Auditorium.
The three-day conference, running from 4 to 6 August 2026, is being hosted under the theme, "Catholic Schools: Rooted in Faith, Rising with Purpose," inspired by Jeremiah 29:11: "I alone know the plans I have for you, plans to bring you prosperity and not disaster, plans to bring about the future you hope for."

The Vice-Chancellor of CUEA, Very Rev. Prof. Stephen Mbugua Ngari, welcomed the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB) leadership and participants from across the country. He reaffirmed the University's commitment to supporting the Church's mission of providing holistic, values-based education that nurtures both academic excellence and moral formation.

The keynote address was delivered by Bishop Mark Kadima, Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Bungoma and Chairperson of the KCCB Commission for Education and Religious Education (CERE). Bishop Obed Karobia, OFM, Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Nairobi, also welcomed the teachers and education leaders attending their annual conference.

During the celebration of the Holy Mass, Bishop Kadima challenged education leaders to embrace servant leadership by leading with humility, accepting correction, forgiving those under their care, and becoming living examples of the values they seek to instill in young people.

Reflecting on the day's readings from the Book of the Prophet Jeremiah and the Gospel according to Matthew, Bishop Kadima emphasized that authentic leadership is rooted in faith, integrity, and a commitment to serving others.

The conference brings together Catholic school principals, teachers, chaplains, and education leaders from across Kenya for three days of prayer, professional reflection, and dialogue on strengthening the mission of Catholic education. Participants are expected to explore contemporary challenges and opportunities facing Catholic schools while reaffirming their shared commitment to faith formation and academic excellence.

The annual conference continues to provide an important platform for collaboration among Catholic educators as they seek to advance quality education grounded in Gospel values and responsive to the changing needs of society.

The rain in Nairobi did not just fall; it conquered. Outside the drafty parish hall of St. Jude’s, the storm thrashed the eucalyptus trees, but inside, the atmosphere was charged with a different kind of electricity.Twenty-two-year-old Claire stood at the podium, her fingers drumming nervously against the wooden edge. Looking out at the seventy young faces tracking her every move, she felt the heavy weight of her responsibility. They were the youth executive committee of the diocese, a group of young Catholics living in a rapidly changing world. Secular culture told them to chase instant gratification, economic hardship tempted them to despair, and online spaces frequently mocked their ancient faith. Yet, here they were, gathered on a stormy Saturday morning, refusing to be a missing generation.Claire cleared her throat, her voice echoing slightly in the cavernous hall. "They call us the 'silent youth' because we don't always loud-shout our presence in the streets. But true resilience isn't loud. It is the steady flame of a sanctuary lamp that refuses to go out, no matter how hard the wind blows."To Claire’s left sat toxic proof of that wind. Emmanuel, a soft-spoken university student, looked down at his notebook. Just three months ago, Emmanuel had faced an impossible choice. A prestigious campus club had offered him a major leadership role, a position guaranteed to catch the eyes of corporate recruiters. The catch? The club’s latest advocacy project directly countered Catholic social teachings on the sanctity of human dignity. For an ambitious young man from a low-income family, turning down the role felt like professional suicide.Emmanuel had spent three sleepless nights in the parish adoration chapel, staring at the monstrance, wrestling with his future. In the end, he chose his conscience over his career path. He resigned from the club. It was a quiet martyrdom, unnoticed by the world, but deeply felt in his soul."We are told that to survive today, we must compromise," Claire continued, catching Emmanuel’s eye and giving him a brief, encouraging nod. "But our faith teaches us that resilience means standing firm when the ground beneath us shakes."In the back row, Maria smiled faintly. Her resilience looked different. Two years prior, her family had been fractured by a sudden tragedy, leaving her to care for her younger siblings while managing her university coursework. Joy felt like a distant memory, and her prayer life had dried into a desert. Instead of walking away from the Church in anger, Maria had brought her brokenness to the youth group. They didn't offer her easy theological platitudes. Instead, they showed up at her house with groceries. They took turns babysitting. They sat with her in the pews when she was too numb to pray. She learned that resilience wasn't about being unbreakable; it was about letting God gather up the pieces.The storm outside suddenly intensified, a crack of thunder rattling the stained-glass windows of the adjacent church, momentarily drowning out Claire's voice. The lights in the parish hall flickered once, twice, and then died completely, plunging the room into darkness.A collective gasp rippled through the crowd. For a moment, there was uneasy silence.Then, a small scratching sound broke the quiet. Near the front, a match flared, illuminating Claire’s determined face. She reached down, took a small white candle from a box on the altar rail, and lit it."Pass it on," she whispered.Emmanuel took the flame onto his own candle, turning to light the wick of the person next to him. Maria did the same in the back. Within two minutes, the dark, drafty hall was transformed. The shadows were pushed back not by a blazing bonfire, but by seventy individual, fragile points of light acting in perfect unison. The warmth in the room was palpable.Claire looked around the illuminated hall, her heart swelling with an overwhelming sense of hope. These young people were entrepreneurs launching ethical businesses, students defending the vulnerable, and creative minds using modern technology to share ancient truths. They were poor, they were tired, and they were fighting uphill battles every single day—but they were entirely alive."The world thinks the Church is fading because they look at empty buildings," Claire said, her voice dropping to a fierce, steady whisper that carried to every corner of the room. "But they are looking in the wrong place. The Church is not a museum of old stones. It is alive right here, burning in the hearts of a generation that refuses to give up on truth, beauty, and love."As if on cue, the seventy voices rose together, breaking into an ancient hymn of praise. Outside, the storm continued to rage, but inside, the resilient youth of St. Jude’s stood fast in the light, completely unshakeable.

Before joining priesthood Rev. Fr. Lewis Kamamo was shortlisted to join KDF as a specialist officer, however he was not admitted and told to go and venture into other national building services.

Born to Kikuyu father at Matunguru in Gatundu and bukusu mother of Kitale Catholic Diocese then full of dreams, expectations obliged as ordered by recruiters at the barracks and left back to the village.

He joined seminary for priesthood formation, then another stumbling block came his way almost shuttering his dreams- COVID 19. Told to stay away again.

With resilience and determination, prayers and hopes he pushed on until recently when his dreams came through. He was among other seven deacons who were ordained into priesthood at the Holy Family Basilica Nairobi.

He was appointed to serve at Our Lady of Fatima Kiriko Parish in Kiambu in the Catholic Archdiocese of Nairobi.

The Young people across East Africa will be having their Mass at Catholic University of East Africa, Nairobi on Sunday 19th July, 2026 to mark the beginning of Amecea's Synodal Journey. Bungoma Diocese will be represented and there asking our members in the diaspora to join them and be part of the team coming from Bungoma and Busia Counties.
