Yesterday marked the final day of our fieldwork within the , concluding a intensive week dedicated to assessing critical watershed areas and engaging with local communities on nature-based solutions.
Over the course of our assessments, we observed serious environmental degradation in several key areas. Throughout this field assessment, understanding the real-world challenges surrounding community water points has remained our top priority. By listening directly to local voices and learning from their experiences, we have been able to:
Identify viable, sustainable nature-based interventions to support long-term water security and ecosystem restoration.
Witness the incredible commitment of local and Indigenous communities who continue to protect and restore these ecosystems despite facing severe challenges.
Integrate local knowledge and stewardship, which remain absolutely critical to safeguarding the catchment’s water resources and biodiversity.
As we wrapped up our field activities , we extended our deepest gratitude to the IUCN - International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The support provided through has been instrumental in allowing us to prioritize this vital landscape and lay the groundwork for long-term community resilience.

THE MARA IS OURS

Gen Z & Millennials Taking the Lead!

Change isn’t just coming to the Mara Basin—we are the ones making it happen. We aren't just "attending workshops" anymore; we’re stepping up as the architects of the Basin’s future.

Boss Moves in Policy: Moving from just being in the room to actually rewriting the rules of water governance.

Conflict Hackers: Learning to mediate and ensure everyone gets their fair share of the flow.

Green Innovation: Leveling up with Smart Jikos and Kitchen Gardens to turn climate action into household income.

Owning the Mic: Public speaking coaching to make sure our advocacy hits hard and clear.

The Network: Building a permanent mentorship squad so no WRUA is left behind.

The Bottom Line When we lead, the ripple effect is real. We’re moving from training to transformation. The Mara Basin belongs to the future, and we’re making sure it stays thriving, protected, and powerful.
"The water flows for everyone, but it’s our unity that keeps it clean." — Mara Youth Champion President.

Yesterday marked the final day of our transformative training program, and the energy in the room was nothing short of electric. After two days of intense, fruitful engagement, our Women Champions from local CBOs and water Resource User’s Associations (WRUAs) are returning to their communities not just as participants, but as formidable architects of change.
When women lead, the ripple effect transforms entire ecosystems. This final session solidified the bridge between policy and practice, ensuring that sustainable water management is driven by those who understand its value most.
Highlights from Our Final Sessions
Our concluding day pushed beyond theory into bold, actionable leadership, focusing on:
Policy Advocacy & Influence: Moving from "having a seat" to actively drafting and influencing water governance frameworks.
Conflict Resolution: Mastering the art of mediation to ensure equitable water sharing across the Basin.
Climate Resilience & Innovation: Integrating income-generating sustainability projects, such as the Smart Jiko and Kitchen Gardens, to enhance household security.
The Power of Narrative: Finalizing public speaking coaching where our leaders practiced "owning the podium" to advocate for the Basin’s future.
As we close this chapter, we aren't just finishing a workshop—we are launching a movement. By equipping these women with strategic decision-making tools and the confidence to lead, and making decisions for protection of the Mara River Basin.
The voices of the Mara have never been stronger.
"The water flows for everyone, but it is the strength of our unity that will keep it clean and constant." — Reflections from a WRUA Champion.

LEADING THE FLOW

Mara Water User's Association Empowering Women in Water Governance

Change isn’t just coming to the Mara Basin—it’s being led by the women who know these waters best!

We held a powerful 1st day training session focused on Strengthening Women’s Leadership and Voice in Water Governance. This gathering brought together incredible Women Champions from local CBOs and 24 Water Resource User’s Associations (WRUAs) across the region.
When women lead, the entire community benefits from more sustainable and equitable water management.

Our sessions dived deep into:

Gender Inclusion: Ensuring women aren't just at the table, but leading the conversation on water policy.
Personal Leadership: Building the confidence to take charge and drive local change.
Strategic Decision-Making: Mastering the skills to navigate complex environmental challenges.
Collective Action: Creating powerful networks that turn individual voices into a movement.
Public Speaking: Owning the room (and the podium) to advocate for the Basin's future.

By equipping these leaders with the tools to communicate and collaborate, we are ensuring the Mara Basin remains a thriving resource for generations to come and for other income generating ideas like the Smart Jiko and Kitchen Gardens.
