Fancy Koech of Koita Village, Kipsonoi Ward, Sotik Sub-county, is proving that a small kitchen garden can make a big difference. Through the Tenwek Community Health and Development Agroecology Program, facilitated in partnership with Koita AGC Church, she transformed a small raised garden into a productive source of food and income.
Today, she grows about ten varieties of vegetables using organic manure from cow dung and goat droppings, keeps a garden record book, and enjoys easier weeding and better crop management.
Her success has inspired her family and community. During the dry season, her son faithfully watered the vegetables, while neighbors regularly visit the farm to learn practical agroecology techniques. For households that depend on tea, which often provides slow and seasonal income, diversified kitchen gardens are strengthening food security, improving nutrition, and creating an additional source of earnings.
