Sustainable Rural Initiatives Sustainable Rural Initiatives (SRI) is a not-for-profit making NGO, operating in Western Part of Kenya - with headquarters in Okana, Kisumu County.

BACKGROUND:

Sustainable Rural Initiatives (SRI) is registered as non-governmental, non-profit making organization based in Okana Village, Nyando Sub-County in Kisumu County, Kenya. SRI aims at transforming livelihoods of community members in the rural communities, and work with them towards better possibilities. This is based on the understanding that addressing community challenges requires a mu

ltidimensional approach. We do this by leveraging our collective talents, resources, knowledge, capacities and networks to encourage societal transformation. This is pursued through the following program areas:

(I) Agriculture and Environment;
(ii) Education support, skills development and entrepreneurship;
(III) Community Health;
(iv) Youth in Action, Advocacy and Policy Making;
(v) Research and extension services. MISSION:

Contributing to social transformation of rural communities in Nyando sub-County and Kisumu at large, by investing in, supporting, connecting and celebrating groups, social entrepreneurs and innovators to solve chronic and pressing challenges. VISION:

Promoting sustainable Rural Community devoid of poverty and suffering but with new possibilities and opportunities arising from local potentials, partnerships, and knowledge application to local challenges. CORE VALUES:

We are completing a powerful 2-month, piloting the IYBA SEED Project Curriculum with 10 trainers of trainers (entrepreneurs). We are excited as the pilot moves into its final two weeks. Over 12+ hybrid sessions, 10 entrepreneurs are getting trained as Trainers of Trainers in 15 practical modules, from “My Entrepreneurial Self” and opportunity identification to Digital Presence, Technology & AI, and Resource Mobilization.

This six-month journey led by SlovakAid in partnership with Impact Gateway Africa brought together 6 Enterprise Support Organizations (ESOs) to co-develop a curriculum that integrates Gender, Disability Inclusion, and Wellbeing across every module.

In the remaining two weeks of July, we will finalize the last modules and provide coaching and mentorship to help these trainers and their businesses move beyond long-term growth and sustainability.

Huge appreciation to the 10 Entrepreneurs who made this collaborative milestone possible.

Today Sustainable Rural Initiatives facilitated the inaugural meeting of the Kisumu County Youth Sector Working Group (KCYSWG), bringing together 40 members for a productive engagement. The meeting was led by the State Department for Youth Affairs and Creative Economy — Regional Coordinator, with strong support from the County Youth Director and the Department of Sports and Youth Affairs.

The Regional Coordinator emphasized the importance of outcome harvesting to track progress and measure milestones in promoting youth affairs across the county. Members agreed to produce a documentary with participation from youth leaders and youth-serving organizations to showcase programs supporting young people in each sub-county.

The meeting also reviewed past International Youth Day activities, acknowledged the outgoing leadership, and proceeded to elect a new team to steer youth affairs for 2026/2027. We congratulate the seven newly elected officials, led by Chairperson Ms. Sarah Apollo.
We wish the new team every success as they lead Kisumu’s youth agenda in the year ahead.

Our community space remains a safe haven where members can freely learn, share, and discuss pressing issues that need supportive, respectful spaces. These conversations strengthen our ongoing work to advance gender justice in rural communities.

We thank our Gender Champion CHP, Madam Juliana Okungu, for facilitating and coaching participants through difficult but crucial topics on gender-based violence, marital r**e, and mental wellness.

With the request of participants to host a separate session for their spouses, we plan to engage them on open discussions on marital challenges and solutions.

This will be followed by joint sessions with spouses, to better understand and curb gender-related challenges together.

Together we can build safer, healthier relationships and communities.

We know entrepreneurs juggle business, gender and disability challenges, and their wellbeing. Most business trainings treat these as separate topics, so they miss how the three interact in real life.

That’s why the IYBA SEED Project has woven this gap into all 15 modules of our new curriculum. We are now piloting the Trainers-of-Trainees program with 10 entrepreneurs from Kadibo and Nyando Sub-Counties over two months.

Last Saturday we ran Virtual Module 1 (two sessions) covering:
a. My Entrepreneurial Journey: self-assessment, motivation, business identity and personal values.
b. Work–life Boundaries: stress tolerance and personal capacity assessment.

Proud of our ToTs for showing up and doing the work. Follow our journey as we continue to build practical, inclusive entrepreneurship support that centers well-being.

On Friday we met with the SRI Annual Football Tournament officials for an insightful planning session as we prepare for the Club Leaders Training and the 2026 SRI Annual Football Tournament.

This year marks a special milestone — 10 years of nurturing talent, building healthy hobbies, and bringing communities together across rural areas.

We look forward to the Club Leaders Training and to another inspiring tournament that continues to empower young people and celebrate community spirit.

We had an inspiring day at Kit Mikayi Historical Site , Seme Sub-County on Friday, 19 June 2026.

SRI staff came together for a refreshing mental wellness and team‑building session, a moment filled with learning, laughter, games, site visits and physical therapy.

This self‑care day also gave us a special opportunity to celebrate male staff during Men’s Mental Health Month, recognizing the importance of mental wellbeing for everyone.

The staff were engaged in the following refreshing activities:
1. Practical therapy and physical wellness activities.
2. Team bonding and learning exchanges.
3. Meaningful discussions on integrating gender with culture and religion, a standout lesson for advancing gender justice in our rural communities.

We appreciate our psychologist and therapist, Jeff Chege from Kivuli Wellness Kenya who joined, shared, and made the day restorative and energizing. We continue to support each other’s mental health at work, at home, and in our communities.

Under the tree, stories continue to shape our character. For generations, the "siwindhes" for girls and young women and the "duol" for boys and young men were more than gatherings, they were living libraries where elders and experienced peers passed down knowledge.

Today, as we work to advance gender justice, we are blending those cultural strengths with modern best practices. By strengthening information sharing and turning knowledge into action, we aim to challenge harmful gender norms that violate human rights and fuel femicide, trafficking, and intolerance.

Our approach uses mixed methods and centers mental wellbeing, gender equity, and disability inclusion, because lasting change respects culture while protecting everyone’s rights.

We continue to learn, unlearn and relearn.

On Friday, 29 May 2026, the SRI Management Team visited KEFEADO offices in Nyamonye for a valuable learning exchange. We shared challenges and wins around gender-led programming and discussed how integrating gender with disability and wellbeing work remains essential.

We toured KEFEADO’s library, cassava and ALV farms, and psychosocial support center, and met members of the community to hear firsthand how their work is impacting women in different enterprises like fish. These conversations strengthened our collaboration and highlighted opportunities for joint gender-led programming, resource mobilization, and stronger advocacy for gender justice.

We appreciate Kenya Female Advisory Organization - Kefeado led by Easter Achieng for the insightful learning. Looking forward to turning this learning into action.
