Comrades,
FYSA from our DPA Commander Jack Farrell regarding BALL CAPS at Post Meetings or OFFICIAL FUNCTIONS. This was covered during our training at the OCT meeting.
---
Comrades may purchase the alternate Caps in the attachment and wear at VFW Meetings, (Post, and District). Reference MOP Sec 803 (page 101 of the Podium Edition 2026). HOWEVER, ALL OFFICERS MUST WEAR THE TRADITIONAL VFW CAP DURING ALL MEETINGS, so wearing the Alternate Cap by an Officer during a Meeting is NOT AUTHORIZED!! This is not to tell an Officer that he/she can't purchase an alternate Cap, they just CANNOT wear it during a Meeting.

In addition, here is information from the National QM General Marc Garduno:
We’ve received some inquiries regarding the status of the alternative caps. Please inform your District and Post leaders that the VFW Store will commence taking online pre-sales starting Tuesday, December 2nd. We expect these orders to be fulfilled sometime between mid to end of month January. Embroidery of these caps will follow the instructions spelled out in MoP Section 803. Since there is limited space for only 18 characters, we will adhere strictly to the titles and abbreviations for only the titles available in the drop down. Starting Dec 2nd, caps will be available at this link https://www.vfwstore.org/category/vfw/uniformcapandnametags

...and finally, for the lawyers out there, here is the direct quote from the BYLAWS/MOP:
Alternative Cap. A baseball-style cap, black in color, lettered with VFW initials, Post numerals, state, rank of office (when applicable), Veterans of Foreign Wars and bearing the Cross of Malta may be worn by members other than officers during meetings of the Post and District. Lettering on each cap shall be in gold. The trim on the front of the bill shall be either gold, green, red, or silver, corresponding to the official braid colors for the respective organizational echelon. The baseball-style cap shall be an alternative to, but not a replacement for the
regulation overseas cap and shall not be worn in place of the regulation cap at formal ceremonies, when in business attire, or at events where the regulation cap is prescribed.f
BOTTOM LINE: If you are at a MEETING, CEREMONIAL EVENT (funeral, memorial, etc) or in business attire (wearing a suite or formal VFW clothing representing the VFW at a function), do NOT wear the ball cap. If in doubt, don't wear it. Trust your gut and go with your regular cap. You can pretty much wear the ball cap at any other thing.
