John C. Parker Memorial VFW Post 1054, Yokosuka, Japan John C. Parker was a Merchant Marine and one of the Post's founding members. To honor him as a founder, the Post was named after him upon his death.

Thank you everyone for your support!
It was another successful fund raise event yesterday! We even have several regular customers now!

Special shoutout to:
- Midori “ADM” Simpkins for standing ALL DAY in the sun/dust to take orders AND to hand out Buddy Poppy without taking any break,
- Murray “Doc/CDR” Simpkins for donating lots of valuable coins/items AND overseeing everything/everyone,
- Timothy Docherty for donating lots of coins/items (the highest sold price item was yours!),
- Dan Fields for donating coins/items (1st sold item of the day that turned out to be 2nd highest sold price was yours),
- Walter Fahnestock for donating your valuable Army uniform set (got good amount of attention, unfortunately there wasn’t any right person to buy this time),
- Fernando Fernandez for coming over and always, ALWAYS being the 1st one to offer the help,
- Mike Lutman for EVERYTHING from buying/carrying/setting up&down to sticking hands in the ice cold water finding cans all day (and putting up with the grumpiest-but-most effective sales person!),
- Team Ogawa san (Ogawa san, Nao san, and Minori san) for sharing the tent and even recommending to buy our drinks while selling their food!
- Last but not least, Shibuya san for getting us another opportunity!

*Next Curry Festival will be held at Mikasa Park in May 2027.
We will need the “refilling ice at noon” team. For those who are looking for the opportunity to help us to help our Veterans, be ready!
And needless to say, we are always looking for more items to sell. If you have any military/pro sports related items(old or new) that you don’t mind letting go, please consider to donate them to our Post! You can help Veterans by helping us!

Post 1054 had its 2nd of the two major fund raisers of the year run by a VFW Auxiliary member Sayuri Lutman and Post Members ADJ/QM Mike Lutman, SVC Chad Yeager and Chaplain/PBA Fernando Fernandez.

The fund raiser was a major success thanks to the many people who either worked the table for both days or prepared, stored and allowed others to bring much needed ice on hot days. Fred and Chad did both. They brought the ice and stayed to support sales. The ladies at Jack's, Kii-san and Natsuko-san put away a bag full of ice for us each night for a week to mitigate having to buy ice at mid day. With them, and Sayuri's sales prowess, we would have fared way less in the outcome.

Our partners in this event, Shibuya-san (our canteen owner) and his Honch Shell team of Ogawa-san, Nao-chan and Minori-chan. They shared the tent with us while selling very "Oishii" white and brown curry with rice and potatoes, Black and regular Curry pan, as well as foot long frankfuters.

As a team, we supported each other through the two days and wound up "selling out" both days.

Again, well done to those who supported the event and we look forward to the next.

VFW POST 1054 Day of Service was completed yesterday at the USS Oneida International Peace Memorial onboard CFAY. Thanks to CDR Walter Fahnestock, SVC Chad Yeager, Chaplain/BA Fernando Fernandez (F2), JVC Elect Tim Docherty and ADJ/QM Mike Lutman for cleaning the place up and making plans for text restoration in the future.

The USS Oneida International Peace Memorial is a commemorative site located within Kosano Park at the United States Fleet Activities Yokosuka naval base in Japan. It honors the 125 crew members who perished when the USS Oneida sank on January 24, 1870, after a collision with the British steamer Bombay.

Key Details of the Memorial Location: Kosano Park, Yokosuka Naval Base, Japan.

Purpose: The memorial serves to honor the sailors lost in the 1870 disaster and to recognize the Japanese fishing boats that rescued 61 survivors.

Dedication: The memorial is often maintained by many organizations to include the VFW.

Design: It is described as an unobtrusive, modern memorial that features a ramp-like walkway and crosses incorporated into the structure.

Historical Context

The Disaster: On January 24, 1870, the screw-sloop USS Oneida was leaving Yokohama for the United States when it was struck by the British steamer Bombay. The ship sank within 15 minutes, resulting in a significant loss of life.

Aftermath: The collision caused controversy at the time, with a U.S. naval court of inquiry blaming the Bombay, which left the scene.

Other Memorials: In addition to the modern memorial in Kosano Park, other tributes exist, including a historic monument at Ikegami Temple in Tokyo where some remains were buried in 1889, and a site at the Yokohama Foreign General Cemetery.

CONGRATULATIONS to VFW Life Member and former U.S. 7th Fleet Command Master, Daniel K. Field on his retirement from the Naval Service. We also congratulate his lovely bride Jaimie and his entire family for their service over the last 34 years.

In attendance at the ceremony and during the post ceremony celebrations were at least 30+ members of both VFW Post 1054 and the FRA Branch 103.

Of special note was the attendance by Dan's mother and father via Zoom. Mr. Jesus Field's remarks were powerful and very thoughtful. They emphasized their family bond and family commitment to service before self. Right by his side, as she has been for 57 years, sat a VERY proud mother, Mrs. Deanna Kay Field. They both lit up a rather large room and helped to inspire us all to do more and keep doing better.

On another note, we learned Dan doesn't do well with other peoples pets. Fortunately for us Dan isn't going anywhere too soon so we look forward to serving with him as we continue to support Veterans and the Community for years to come.

Chicken Santa? NOBODY calls Santa Chicken....however, he does deliver!

Santa Mike Lutman and his trusty Auxiliary (At Large) copilot Sayuri Lutman FINALLY got back to conducting our annual CHICKEN SANTA community service event by providing Popeye's Chicken and all the trimmings to The Flower Arrangement Group, Kamakura.

The last time we did this was in 2018, just before COVID. It was fun giving back to the community and seeing old friends AND new ones! This eclectic group of 20 ladies ranges from PhDs to ordinary family members. The first group of five is captured in a pic along with Santa. Pictured also is Matoba Sensei, who has been practicing and teaching the art of flower arrangement for 8 decades.

We are already planning for next year! Merry Christmas to the entire group of Flower Arrangers (we call them Flower Rangers) from VFW Post 1054!

BZ to JVC Earl Jackson and Chaplain Fred Fernandez for manning the Welcome Home Committee!!! Alongside our AAU USS GEORGE WASHINGTON FAMILY READINESS GROUP, Comrades were on hand to represent the Veterans of Foreign Wars VFW and welcome home thousands of Active Duty men and women back to Yokosuka.

The USS GEORGE WASHINGTON (CVN-73) USS George Washington (CVN 73) is the sixth Nimitz-class nuclear-powered aircraft carrier named in honor of the first president of the United States and serves as the nation’s only premier aircraft carrier forward-deployed to Japan. She carries a full complement of over 6,000 sailors and air wing personnel, typically around 3,200 ship's company and another 2,500 from the Carrier Air Wing, making for a total crew of roughly 5,700 to over 6,000 people when deployed, depending on the embarked air wing.

HOOYAH to all the Great Americans and their family members serving our great nation and protecting Freedom, Forward Deployed in Japan.
