'World Heritage Class' is an educational programme designed to encourage the next generation of high school students to learn about World Heritage sites and local cultural heritage, deepen their understanding of Nara's history and culture, and foster awareness about the importance of safeguarding and passing on cultural heritage to future generations.
On Friday, 3 July, a World Heritage Class was held for 30 students at Nara Prefectural University Senior High School who had volunteered to participate.
Ms KUBO Michiyo, a freelance announcer and World Heritage enthusiast, was invited as the guest lecturer. In addition to providing an introduction to the origins and basic concepts of the World Heritage Convention, she also spoke about 'Asuka-Fujiwara: Archaeological sites of Japan’s Ancient Capitals and Related Properties', which is currently seeking inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
As the school plans for students to take the World Heritage Certification (Sekai Isan Kentei), the session served as preparatory learning. The students gathered after school and listened attentively throughout the lecture. A question-and-answer session followed, providing students with an opportunity to deepen their understanding of the topics discussed.
As 'Asuka-Fujiwara' is expected to be inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List later this month, the event also attracted coverage from local television stations.

次世代を担う高校生が、世界の遺跡や地域の文化遺産について学び、その価値を自ら考えることを通して、奈良の歴史や文化への理解を深め、将来にわたり文化遺産を守り伝えていく意識を育む契機となることを目指して開催している事業です。

7月3日（金）奈良県立大学附属高等学校の希望者30名を対象に「世界遺産教室」を開催しました。
講師には、フリーアナウンサーであり「旅する世界遺産研究家」としても活躍されている久保美智代さんをお迎えし、世界遺産の成り立ちと概要の基礎的なお話に加えて、現在世界遺産登録を目指している「飛鳥・藤原の宮都」についてもご紹介いただきました。

同校では世界遺産検定の受験を予定しており、その事前学習として、希望した生徒30名が放課後に集まり、熱心に耳を傾けていました。
講義のあとには質疑応答の時間を設け、生徒の皆さんがさらに理解を深められる機会となりました。

今回は「飛鳥・藤原の宮都」が7月下旬に世界遺産登録を控えていることもあり、テレビ局による取材も入りました。

🏫World Heritage Class was held at Nara Prefectural Soekami High School

On Wednesday, 17 June, a World Heritage Class was held for 181 first-year students at Soekami High School.
Ms KUBO Michiyo, a freelance announcer and World Heritage enthusiast, was invited as the guest lecturer. She spoke about the basics of World Heritage sites and "Asuka-Fujiwara: Archaeological sites of Japan’s Ancient Capitals and Related Properties," a site currently being considered for World Heritage inscription.
The school is planning a field study visit to Asuka-Fujiwara in September, and the students attended this lecture as part of their preparatory learning.
Although the session was only 50 minutes, the content was concise and easy to understand, helping the students deepen their understanding of the World Heritage system.

🏫奈良県立添上高等学校で世界遺産教室を開催しました。

6月17日（水）添上高等学校の 1年生181名を対象に世界遺産教室を開催しました。
講師にはフリーアナウンサーで「旅する世界遺産研究家」の久保美智代さんをお招きし、世界遺産の概要と世界遺産への登録が進められている「飛鳥・藤原の宮都」についてお話いただきました。
同校は9月に校外学習で飛鳥・藤原を尋ねるフィールドワークを計画しており、その事前学習のために聴講されました。
50分という短い時間でしたが、簡潔で分かりやすい内容となっており、生徒の皆さんに世界遺産への理解を深めてもらうことができました。

Regional Workshop for Cultural Heritage Protection to be held in Palau
-Promoting Sustainable Preservation and Utilisation of Cultural Heritage through Workshop in Palau-

ACCU Nara conducted a preliminary survey in Palau in May in preparation for an international workshop scheduled to take place in the Republic of Palau in October 2026.

During the visit, ACCU Nara signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Human Resources, Culture, Tourism and Development of the Palau National Government regarding the implementation of the workshop and held discussions about the details of the training programme. In addition, with the cooperation of an instructor for the Workshop, Dr YAMAGUCHI Hiroshi (Senior Researcher, Nara National Research Institute for Cultural Properties), the team disucssed the possibility of conducting 3D documentation of a traditional men's meeting house (Bai) as part of the Workshop and exchanged views on the challenges and opportunities related to the preservation and utilisation of cultural heritage. Located in Airai State, this Bai is the oldest surviving example among the few traditional Bai structures that remain today.

In addition, ACCU Nara shared information with relevant organisations, including the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). Palau is actively promoting sustainable tourism initiatives, and synergies between ACCU Nara's Workshop and other ongoing projects are expected.

The workshop is scheduled to be held over a week in October 2026 and will be jointly organised by the Agency for Cultural Affairs of Japan, ACCU Nara, and the Ministry of Human Resources, Culture, Tourism and Development of the Republic of Palau, with the cooperation of the Nara National Research Institute for Cultural Properties. This Workshop builds on the outcomes of the 2025 Thematic Training Course, "3D Documentation and Management of Archaeological Sites and Cultural Site Restoration," conducted in November 2025. Based on discussions with the Government of Palau, the workshop will focus on the themes of "3D Documentation and Utilization of Cultural Heritage" and "Heritage and Tourism Management." It aims to facilitate the sharing of knowledge and practical skills that support both the preservation and sustainable utilisation of cultural heritage.

パラオで文化遺産に関わる国際ワークショップ開催へ
ーパラオでのワークショップで持続可能な文化遺産保存活用を目指すー

2026年10月にパラオ共和国で開催予定の国際ワークショップに向け、5月に事前調査を実施しました。

現地では、パラオ政府人材・文化・観光・開発省との間でワークショップ実施に関する覚書（MoU）を締結するとともに、研修内容について協議を行いました。また、ワークショップの講師を務める予定の山口欧志氏（奈良文化財研究所主任研究員）にご協力いただき、研修の実習対象として男性の伝統的集会所「バイ」の3D記録について検討し、文化遺産の保存・活用に関する課題や可能性について意見交換を行いました。当バイはアイライ州に位置しており、現存する数少ないバイの中で最も古いものです。

さらに、JICAをはじめとする関係機関と情報共有を行いました。パラオ国内では持続可能な観光促進に向けた取組が進められており、本ワークショップとの連携による相乗効果も期待されています。

ワークショップは、奈良文化財研究所の協力のもと、文化庁、ACCU奈良、パラオ政府人材・文化・観光・開発省の共催により、2026年10月に１週間開催予定です。本ワークショップは、2025年11月に実施した個別テーマ研修「気候変動に対応する文化遺産保護：3D技術と持続的な遺産の保存活用」の成果を発展させるものです。パラオ政府からのご要望をいただき、今回のワークショップでは「文化遺産の3D記録・活用」と「文化遺産と観光マネジメント」をテーマに、文化遺産の保存と活用を両立するための知識や技術の共有を目指します。

The application period for the ACCU Group Training Course 2026 has been extended until 30 June 2026.
The theme of this year's training is 'Conservation and Management of Archaeological Sites and Artefacts' and will be conducted in a hybrid format combining online and onsite training in Nara, Japan.
The programme provides an excellent opportunity for young heritage professionals from the Asia-Pacific region to further their understanding about archaeological site investigation methods, artefact documentation techniques, and approaces to utilisation and management of archaeological heritage.

ACCU Nara Launches New International Cooperation Project in Response to Requests from Past Training Participants!
- Preserving Pacific Cultural Heritage for Future Generations: Field Survey Conducted with past training participants in Palau -

At ACCU Nara, we develop new international cooperation projects every year based on the needs and requests of past training participants.
This year, in response to requests from past participants from the Republic of Palau, we conducted a field survey on the current challenges surrounding cultural heritage protection in the country. Palau, a Pacific paradise with a population of approximately 18,000, preserves not only mixed heritage sites such as the UNESCO World Heritage "Rock Islands Southern Lagoon" but also a rich variety of cultural heritage. The islands are home to many stone cultural properties known as “stone faces” as well as traditional wooden structures called "Bai".
During this visit, ACCU met with Minister Ngiraibelas Tmetuchl of the Ministry of Human Resources, Culture, Tourism and Development to exchange views on how the island’s tourism resources—including cultural heritage, natural heritage, and war-related heritage—can be managed in the future, as well as on the need for digital documentation to preserve and promote these heritage assets. We plan to design future training programs that can contribute to addressing these two issues.
ACCU also visited the Embassy of Japan in Palau and met with Ambassador Kasahara, who kindly shared many valuable insights. In addition, we visited the JICA Palau Office, where we received information and exchanged opinions on the progress of JICA’s new “Tourism Project,” which focuses on the war heritage remaining on the islands.
Updates on the projects to be launched this year will be reported on our website in due course. We warmly welcome further training proposals from former ACCU trainees as well.

過去研修生の要望に応え新しい国際協力事業を展開！
ー太平洋の文化遺産を次世代へ：パラオ研修生と現地調査を実施ー

ACCU奈良では、毎年、過去の研修参加者の要望をもとに、新しい国際協力事業を構築しています。
今年はパラオ共和国からの研修生の要望をもとに、同国における文化遺産保護の課題を現地調査してきました。パラオは人口約1万8千人の太平洋の楽園で、UNESCO世界遺産であるロックアイランドをはじめとする複合遺産に加え、多くの文化遺産も保存されています。島内には、ストーンフェイスと呼ばれる石造文化財や、バイと呼ばれる伝統的な木造建造物などが多く残されています。
今回、ACCUはパラオ人材・文化観光開発省のNgiraibelas Tmetuchl大臣と面会し、文化遺産・自然遺産、さらに戦争遺産を含めた島の観光資源を将来どのようにマネジメントできるか、また遺産紹介のためのデジタル記録の必要性について意見交換を行いました。この二つの課題に貢献できる研修を今後計画していきます。
訪問中には在パラオ日本国大使館も訪れ、笠原大使と面会し、多くの貴重なご意見をいただきました。また、JICAパラオ事務所も訪問し、島内に残る戦争遺産を中心としたJICAの新たな「観光プロジェクト」の立ち上げ状況について情報をいただき、意見交換を行いました。

FY2025 International Correspondent: "Heritage Conservation in the Asia-Pacific: Trends, Challenges, and Opportunities"

The FY2025 ACCU Nara International Correspondent, "Heritage Conservation in the Asia-Pacific: Trends, Challenges, and Opportunities," was held on 22 January, 2026.
Mr. Jethro Tulupul STALEN from Papua New Guinea presentated “Preliminary Study on Effects on Heritage Collections due to lack of disaster and hazard policy frameworks for heritage collections in Papua New Guinea: A case study on Papua New Guinea National Museum and Art Gallery & Kokopo Museum.”
Dr. Matthew SCHMIDT from New Zealand presented “Te Papa Atawhai/Dept. of Conservation Southern South Is. New Zealand - Heritage Conservation Projects 2025-2026.”
Ms. Rohayah binti CHE AMAT from Malaysia presented
“From Research to Public Memory: Protecting Sydney Lake Garden as Cultural Landscape.”
Dr. Suresh Suras SHRESTHA from Nepal presented “Cultural Heritage Rehabilitation: EXPERIENCES and ACHIEVEMENTS.”
Ms. Tatyana TRUDOLYUBOVA from Uzbekistan presented “Uzbekistan's types and approaches to cultural heritage documentation.”

Abstracts submitted by the Correspondents will be available on the ACCU Nara website in both English and Japanese at a later date.

2025年度インターナショナルコレスポンデンスを開催しました。

1月22日（木）に2025年度インターナショナルコレスポンデント「アジア太平洋地域における文化遺産保護―動向・課題・展望」が開催されました。
パプアニューギニアのジェスロ・トゥルプル・スタレン氏は、「パプアニューギニアにおける文化遺産コレクションのための防災・危機管理政策枠組みの欠如がもたらす影響に関する予備的研究　―パプアニューギニア国立博物館・美術館およびココポ博物館を事例として―」を発表しました。
ニュージーランドのマシュー・シュミット氏は、「テ・パパ・アタファイ／自然保護省南島南部ニュージーランド　―2025–2026年の文化遺産保護プロジェクト―」を発表しました。
マレーシアのロハヤ・ビンティ・チェ・アマット氏は、「研究からパブリックメモリーへ　―文化的景観としてのシドニー・レイク・ガーデンの保護―」を発表しました。
ネパールのスレシュ・スラス・シュレスタ氏は、「文化遺産の再生　―経験と成果―」を発表しました。
ウズベキスタンのタチヤナ・トルドリュボワ氏は、「ウズベキスタンにおける文化遺産記録化の類型とアプローチ」を発表しました。

なお、各コレスポンデントより提出された要旨は、後日ACCU奈良のウェブサイト上で英語版・日本語版の両方にて公開される予定です。

2025 Cultural Heritage Seminar: "The Significance of Asuka-Fujiwara becoming a World Heritage Site"

The 2025 ACCU Nara Cultural Heritage Seminar, "The Significance of Asuka-Fujiwara becoming a World Heritage Site," was held on 17 January, 2026.
Dr. SUZUKI Chihei, Specialist for Cultural Properties, Agency for Cultural Affairs, was invited to lecture about the historical background and value of “Asuka-Fujiwara: Archaeological sites of Japan’s Ancient Capitals and Related Properties," which is currently nominated for inscription on the World Heritage List. Dr. SUZUKI also talked about the World Heritage system and inscription process. There was also a question and answer session, making the seminar engaging and meaningful.

Many people attended the event, and ACCU Nara would like to thank all those who came.
