📣Introduction of Traditional Crafts: Tokyo Teue Burashi[Handmade Brushes]📣

The beginning of the brush in Japan was in the middle of the 19th century, and was made in the model of a French-made brush such as clothes brushes and brushes used in washing horses and the westernization of lifestyles increased its demand. In addition, the Tokugawa shogunate and the SPDC clan introducing the military administration style was another factor for its prosperity.💡

Compared to being planted for each hole in the planting machine, hand-flocked brushes are planted in succession by stainless steel wire, called draw lines, and the durability of the bristles are very high.✨

📣Introduction of Traditional Crafts: Tokyo Ginki【Silverware】📣

Silverware has a long history in Japan and the name of the silver tableware and Liquor in the "Engi-type" (916 years) can be seen on them. It was said that silverware started to be made in earnest after silver mine was found in many areas and a new refining process was gotten from southern barbarians in Muromachi era.✨

And in the Edo period, it was found that even among townspeople, silverwares and silver tools were used widely. Tokyo (in particular, Taito-ward) is a main producing center at present.💞

📣Introduction of Traditional Crafts:Doki [Copperware]📣

While there are 2 traditional copperware manufacturing techniques – hammering, where the material is formed using a hammer, and casting, where melted copper is poured into a casting mold – the copperware in Taito-ku was manufactured using the hammering technique. Furthermore, special techniques such as bronzing and patination bring about a slightly different beauty in the copperware’s appearance.✨

Copper products enjoy a thoroughly rooted popularity among everyday items due to their heat resistance, often used for cooking instruments such as kettles and frying pans.💖

📣Introduction of Traditional Crafts: Kiri-Kogei[Paulownia Craftwork]📣

It is said that around the same time as paulownia bureaus began to be produced in the Edo period that other handicrafts of the same material also started to be made.💡

Making use of the wood’s lightness, flexibility and excellent permeability, all sorts of products have been produced from paulownia wood.✨

In Taito-ku, there are Paulownia wood box artworks that have been crafted using “kiri-kime-komi-saiku” – a unique method that consists of using a graver to carve designs onto Paulownia chests or wooden boxes and utilizing pure silk fabric (as used in kimono) or other rare antique kimono fabrics to decorate them with patterns of talisman-like images such as dragonflies, gourds or bells – and that enhance the value of such objects, ascertaining certain characteristics of objects used for the storage of artworks and tea utensils.😊

📣Introduction of Traditional Crafts: Edo Sashimono【Wood Joinery】 📣

“Sashimono” refers to the process of conjoining two pieces of wood together without the aid of nails but rather by using a variety of different techniques such as the process of “hozotsugi” wherein one plank will have a protrusion created at its edge and the other have a recess known as a “hozoana” made into it, allowing the former to be inserted into the later and thereby conjoined.💡

Edo sashimono, known for requiring a high level of proficiency to create, may look simpler in comparison with their elegant Kyo sashimono counterparts from Kyoto that utilize ornamentation such as lacquer work and gold leaf, they have their own chicness borne from capitalizing on the grain of the wood by the artisans, their durability also being one of their alluring points.✨

📣Introduction of Traditional Crafts: Signboard Engraving [Kanban-Chokoku] 📣
Out of all of the many signboards one finds on the street today, from time to time, one may come across a carved wooden signboard with a richness to it not found in other signs.✨

Signs that take after placards known as “hengaku” (the laterally-oriented signs that adorn gates and rooms) which draw their long history back to the Asuka period.😊

Inheriting the traditions of the hengaku craftsman of the Edo period (1603-1867), these signs continue to be crafted by hand here in Taito ward, with the warmth and nostalgia that their material carries along with their natural appearance being re-examined in recent years, creating more demand for them.🤲

📣Introduction of Traditional Crafts: Edo Kiriko【Cut Glassware】📣
Kiriko refers to highly transparent crystal glass that has been carved or cut with intricate patterns, otherwise known as cut glass.✨

Edo Kiriko was started by a man named Kagaya Kyubei who studied glassmaking in Osaka and under the instruction of an English engineer, developed elaborate methods of cutting glass in the 15th year of the Meiji period (1883)💡.

Edo Kiriko features a variety of different designs etched into the surface of the glass, their transparency making for brilliant works of art.🤲
In addition to the more traditional patterns of bamboo fences, chrysanthemums, and h**p leaves, one can also find pieces made with novel, modern designs.💫

📣Introduction of Traditional Crafts: Fukuromono[Pouches]📣

The word fukuromono in Japanese refers to any sort of item used to house or carry things such as purses for money, wallets, pouches and bags.👜

And during the flourishing of popular culture during the Edo period (1603-1867), these pouches used to carry everyday items also flourished, the popularity of stylish bags such as to***co pouches spreading throughout the masses.😊

However, it was not only their decoration but also their practicality that developed during this time, and items such as small glasses and mobile phone cases produced in the same traditional methods as these to***co pouches remain popular even today.💡

📣Introduction of Traditional Crafts: Insho-Chokoku[Stamp Carving]📣

The origin of stamp carving is said to trace its history back to before the common era, 4,000 years ago in Mesopotamia, and the usage of stamps as a method of official verification continues into the present day, especially in East and Southeast Asia.💡

Here in Taito ward, stamps brimming with originality continue to be produced, characters and designs carved into natural wood such as that of the cherry tree, tea plants, and camellias, illustrating the area’s deep roots in the stamp carving tradition.
Both the quality of the wood and the warmth imbued into each hand-carved character are the most alluring points of these stamps.🤲✨
