🍗 Why most Muslims skip Japanese konbini fried chicken (Famichiki, Karaage-kun, 7-Eleven):

Non-Halal Meat: Standard conventional slaughter (non-zabiha).

Alcohol in Marinade: Uses mirin (~14% alcohol) and soy sauce containing alcohol.

Hidden Pork: Flavorings often contain pork extract.

Shared Fryers: Cooked in oil used for pork products.

Halal Alternatives:
Seek out halal-certified chicken shops in Shin-Okubo, Asakusa, or Shinjuku—or order halal ingredients online! 🌙

You're at a street food stall in Japan. It smells incredible. But you're not sure what's in it. 😰

Here's exactly what to say to the vendor 👇

🗣️ You: すみません、豚肉は入っていますか?
(Sumimasen, butaniku wa haitte imasu ka?)
"Excuse me, does this contain pork?"

🗣️ You: ラードは使っていますか?
(Raado wa tsukatte imasu ka?)
"Do you use lard?"

🗣️ You: アルコールは入っていますか?
(Arukoru wa haitte imasu ka?)
"Does this contain alcohol?"

🗣️ You: お肉は何ですか?
(Onikku wa nan desu ka?)
"What kind of meat is this?"

📌 Screenshot this before your next market visit.

Most vendors in Japan will understand these questions and answer honestly. If they look unsure — that's also an answer. 🌙

🍮 Gelatin is hiding in almost every konbini dessert. Here is what you need to know before you buy. 👇

🟡 Pudding (プリン) — classic egg custard usually fine. Check for ゼラチン in mousse layers.
🟢 Konjac jelly (こんにゃくゼリー) — plant-based, always safe.
🔴 Standard jelly cups (ゼリー) — almost always pork gelatin. Skip.
🟢 Mochi & Daifuku — red bean filling is your safest dessert pick.
🟡 Plain yogurt — usually fine. Mousse and layered yogurt — check every time.
🟡 Ice cream — plain milk or matcha is generally okay. Layered parfait cups have gelatin layers.
🟢 Dorayaki & Wagashi — traditional Japanese sweets are mostly plant-based. Western cream fillings — check.

The one word to search on every dessert label: ゼラチン

If you see it and it doesn't say plant source — skip it. 🌙

📌 Save this for your next konbini run.

🍞 That melon pan looks innocent. But the filling sometimes isn't.

Quick guide to konbini bread and pastries before your next 7-Eleven run 👇

🟢 Plain white bread (食パン) — usually fine, check for ラード
🟢 Anpan (あんパン) — red bean filling is generally safe
🟡 Melon pan (メロンパン) — cookie crust may have animal shortening
🟡 Cream & custard buns — check for gelatin in whipped cream types
🔴 Nikuman (肉まん) — almost always pork. Do not assume chicken.
🔴 Curry pan (カレーパン) — pork meat, sauce often has alcohol

Rule: the bread is usually fine. It is always the filling and the fat source. Check for ラード and 肉エキス every time.

📌 Save this before your next konbini run.

Japan's street food smells incredible. But knowing what to check before you eat — that's the real travel hack. 🇯🇵

Here's a quick guide to 3 of the most popular street foods 👇
🐙 Takoyaki — octopus itself is halal, but always ask:
Is the batter made with lard? Is the griddle shared with pork? Some stalls use bonito flakes (katsuobushi) on top too. When in doubt, ask the vendor or skip.
🐟 Taiyaki — the fish-shaped waffle pastry is usually fine. Classic red bean (あんこ) filling is the safest choice. Check custard varieties — some use animal-derived additives. Avoid any meat-filled versions.
🍜 Yakisoba — the noodles are fine, but the sauce often contains alcohol, and the meat used is usually pork. This one is the hardest to verify at a stall. Look for vegetarian yakisoba (野菜のみ) as a safer option.
📌 Rule of thumb: the simpler the ingredient list, the safer the street food. Red bean, plain batter, plain noodles — always check the protein and the sauce.
