【A Heart-Warming Local Dish in Shimabara: “Guzoni” at Himematsuya Main Store🍲】

As the year is coming to an end, the New Year 2026 is just around the corner.
Today, we’d like to introduce “Guzoni”, a traditional local dish from Shimabara that is also enjoyed as a New Year’s specialty😋

When people think of Japanese New Year cuisine, many imagine “Ozoni”, a simple soup made with mochi and local ingredients.
In contrast, Guzoni is known for its generous variety of ingredients, including chicken, daikon radish, burdock root, shiitake mushrooms, and more.

Speaking of famous Guzoni restaurants in Shimabara, Himematsuya is a must-visit! 👍
Their Guzoni is made with 13 carefully selected local ingredients, such as conger eel, burdock root, rolled omelet, shiitake mushrooms, frozen tofu, lotus root, and garland chrysanthemum, making it both nutritious and deeply satisfying.
In Shimabara, Guzoni is enjoyed not only during the New Year but throughout the year, and it’s especially recommended during the colder seasons.

You can enjoy Guzoni on its own, or try the Guzoni set meal, which comes with sashimi and small side dishes—perfect for those who want to fully experience Shimabara’s local cuisine.
The Himematsuya main store is located right in front of Shimabara Castle, making it an ideal stop during your sightseeing.
Please note: The restaurant is closed on January 1–2, 2026.

【A Village Filled with Wishes and Prayers: “Kuroshima Village”】

From Ainoura Port in Sasebo City, take the Ferry Kuroshima for about 50 minutes!
Kuroshima Island is home to one of the components of the UNESCO World Heritage Site,
“Hidden Christian Sites in the Nagasaki Region”.

During the ban on Christianity, Hidden Christians who moved here from Sotome and other areas lived quietly in the Kuroshima Village, preserving their faith while keeping their voices low.
Their traces and way of life can still be felt across the island today.

A must-see highlight is the Kuroshima Church, which symbolizes the end of the “hidden” era of Christianity within the settlement.
It is said to have been built over 100 years ago by Father Maruman and the local believers, using around 400,000 bricks. Its dignified presence is truly breathtaking.
Even today, Mass and church events are held here, and it continues to be carefully protected as a sacred place of prayer.

Why not visit Kuroshima Island and experience the history and heartfelt devotion of the Hidden Christians by yourself?

【Iwado Shrine – A Sacred Power Spot Hidden Deep in the Forests of Unzen ⛩】

About 30 minutes by car from Shimabara Station on the Shimabara Railway, or about 12 minutes from Kojiro Station, lies Unzen — a place surrounded by the mountains and sea of the Shimabara Peninsula. Deep within its forest is a spot that feels as if the entire natural landscape itself has become a shrine. This is Iwado Shrine.

Affectionately called “Iwado-san” by the locals, it is also known as a place where many come to collect its famous spring water.

The approach to the shrine is lined with centuries-old cedar and cypress trees, and the ground is covered with mossy stones and sprawling roots. 🌳
On days after the rain, the scenery becomes especially beautiful — the quiet, crisp atmosphere makes it easy to feel that this is a truly special place.

The deity enshrined at Iwado Shrine, Iwanaga-hime-no-Mikoto, is believed to bring blessings of longevity and good relationships. If you want to feel the spiritual power that resides in nature, this is a place you should definitely visit. ✨
