Takeshi Igarashi, our founder, studied the ecology of corals in Tokyo Bay when he was young. Tokyo Bay is the northen limit of reef building coral distribution in the world & approximately 23 species are known.

Over the past 7 years, water temperatures in the bay are warmer due to the influence of the Kuroshio current. As a result, seaweed has decreased and corals have grown larger.

This summer he resumed his research again after 30 years for Nippon Television (NTV)'s programme “Every”. The branched coral colony Acropora pruinosa has grown four times larger than it was 30 years ago!

During the Jomon era, 6000years ago, approximately 70 reef building coral species were distributed in Tokyo Bay including the Acropora pruinosa that they managed to film spawning. Through warm and cold periods, corals in Tokyo Bay have adapted.

You can see footage of the coral spawning from the programme via the link in our story! ☺️

MBDR researcher and PhD student Leanne Rosser () attended the 20th International Symposium on Primatology and Wildlife Sciences at Kyoto University 🦧🐒🐬

She presented her poster on the current MBDR photo-ID work. The ID catalogue now contains over 1,000 individual dolphins across a 10-year dataset and gives us insight into site fidelity 💙

The theme for this symposium was 'Beyond Boundaries: Cross-disciplinary visions for conservation and discovery' and was filled with inspirational researchers of many species. It was especially impressive to see Japan's decades long collaborations with Southeast Asia in the field of primatology.

NEW MBDR PAPER ALERT 📣

'Classification of sounds from Pacific white-sided dolphins using a convolutional neural network and a method to reduce false-positive detections'

Authors:
Yuka Mishima, Mizuki Kawakami, Takeshi Igarashi, Yuki F. Kita, Tadamichi Morisaka

🐬 In this study long-term hydrophones were placed in Mutsu Bay and Funka Bay (Hokkaido) to eventually better understand migration patterns of Pacific white-sided dolphins using passive acoustic monitoring (PAM). We developed an automatic detector for the clicks and pulsed calls of the dolphins by applying a CNN architecture. Furthermore, an additional selection criterion using a two-process model was proposed to overcome the limitations of the detector. These combinations achieved the reliable detection of dolphins.

✨Interestingly the two bays revealed different soundscapes and both clicks and pulsed calls were recorded throughout the day showing that dolphins are present in the night in both bays.

Sound on for slide 2 to hear Pacific white-sided dolphin chatter!

Lovely day at Wakinosawa Primary School here in Aomori 😊 We gave presentations on dolphin behaviour and showed some of our photo-ID results.

The kids had many questions about dolphin group composition and differences between males and females.

Every year these children are totally engaged and eager to learn more about their hometown dolphin visitors 🐬

Early morning landwatch followed by a morning boat survey today 😁

Not many dolphin groups in the bay on this cloudy, cold day but we did see a large group from our landwatch, they were travelling fast! We found a different group from the boat which slowed right down for us to take photo ID shots 👍

The wind was too strong on this evening's landwatch so hopefully it dies down before tomorrow's morning boat survey 🙏

Great day of research today ☺️ A trip on the sightseeing boat in the morning followed by an afternoon landwatch watching feeding dolphins close to the coast again.

It was great fun seeing how excited the sightseeing boat tourists were by the dolphins. There was a lot of joy on board today! すごかった!

Along the coast of the Shimokita Peninsula is one of the best places to see Pacific white-sided dolphins from land 😊 They come so close that we can even identify individuals!

These photos were taking during an afternoon landwatch last week as the dolphins were feeding 🐟

A very windy day so no boat survey today but we did do a great landwatch this afternoon! Chasing dolphins up and down the coast as they were feeding 😊

Today we conducted a 6am survey 😊 The weather was cloudy and the sea was choppy but we had a great time with the dolphins. They stayed with our boat for a while approaching us curiously 😋
