Dear Members of the Tokyo Atago Rotary Club,
Thank you very much for attending the regular meeting held at the American Club from 8:00 AM on Tuesday, March 3rd.
From President Shimazu, we received a report on the great success of the Family Gathering on Saturday, February 28th, with nearly 40 participants, including 12 children. The event featured a quiz competition, a cocktail show, and a rough diamond auction, which created a lot of excitement. The proceeds from the postcards (¥22,000) and the painting auction (¥55,500) were donated to the "Nikoniko" fund. This was followed by a report on the song and concert event.
Following this, Ms. Niimaki gave a reminder of the March and April schedules, and Mr. Suzuki announced the March birthdays and the 100% attendance list for January and February.
We then received an introduction to the program from Youth Exchange Committee member Hiroki Tsuda. (He shared that the Youth Exchange program began internationally in the 1920s and in Japan in the 1940s. Mr. Tsuda himself participated in Australia 42 years ago, and his siblings also participated.)
Finally, we heard a presentation from our little goodwill ambassador, Gemma. Ms. Gemma holds dual citizenship, with Italian and French parents, and grew up in a small French village near Geneva, in a beautiful, nature-rich area close to Switzerland. She mentioned her great love for Switzerland and that her family in France lives near a large, medieval castle. She also has experience hosting exchange students. She spoke about her family (younger brother, parents), her Japanese, French, and Italian friends, and her experience since coming to Japan.
Ms. Gemma shared her discoveries about Japanese food—Soba, a new kind of pizza, and ice cream—and how she has changed. She earnestly spoke in Japanese, supported by photos from a year ago, last August, and a week ago.
She concluded by saying, "I am grateful to everyone who made it possible for me to come to Japan."
During the Q&A session that followed, she earnestly answered questions from the Atago members, many of whom are fluent in languages.
Q: Famous Japanese people?
A: Yoshihiro Togashi, the author of Hunter × Hunter and Naruto.
Q: Dream for the future?
A: I have many.
Q: Places visited in Japan?
A: Osaka, Izumo, Kyoto, Mt. Fuji.
Q: What surprised you about the difference between Japan and France?
A: When I was living in Shibuya, the city was very bright even at night.
The meeting was very meaningful, as we were able to experience Ms. Gemma's wonderful experiences and enthusiasm.
Sincerely,
Yuko Tadano
