One of our host families shared this lovely moment from a recent visit. 🌸

Their 14-year-old son sat down with two guest boys of the exact same age for a serious match of Shogi. Huddled over the board on the tatami mat, they spent the whole evening completely immersed in the game.

After the final move, all three of them were laughing together and shouting "So good game!!"

It is always wonderful to see how naturally teenagers connect over a meal and a simple game. ♟️☺️

Visiting Kumamoto turned out to be a highlight of the trip for our guests from the US, especially when they were welcomed into a beautiful traditional Japanese home for lunch. 🌸✨

Our guests were hosted by a local family spanning four generations living under one roof. The table was filled with a traditional Kumamoto feast called hachimori, including a comforting homemade dumpling soup you wouldn't find in restaurants, and everyone learned how to make their own temaki hand rolls together!

The afternoon became even more special as they ended up celebrating the 7-year-old daughter's birthday. From chatting about school during the drive over to sharing stories around the table, conversation flowed naturally. Even with family members who were a bit shy to speak English, warmth and big smiles made everyone feel completely at home.

For the guests, the whole gathering felt just like a classic Sunday family dinner back home. Before saying goodbye, they were even surprised with a sweet gift of local Kumamoto dango and snacks for the road🥹

When traveling to a massive city like Tokyo, making real local connections can feel pretty intimidating, especially with kids in tow. That is why one family visiting from the UK decided to try a Borderless Visit, hoping to give their 11-year-old daughter a chance to experience daily life in Japan. 🌸
