【Open Call】Kyoto Traditional Crafts Research Residency 2026

We are pleased to announce a new international research residency exploring Kyoto's traditional crafts.

This residency invites participants to explore Kyoto's traditional crafts through their relationships with materials, architecture, landscapes, and local communities.

Based in Kyoto, participants will develop their own research through dialogue, fieldwork, and encounters with craftspeople, researchers, and local residents.

🌿 Monthly Check-in Presentation & Exchange vol.2 開催報告

第2回となるMonthly Check-in Presentation & Exchangeでは、出身地も活動分野も世代も異なる、6名の登壇者をお迎えしました。
現代アート、伝統工芸、ミュージアム研究、コミュニティを基盤としたフィールドワーク。発表では、それぞれが京都での滞在を通して見つけたことや、そこから生まれた問い、現在進行中のリサーチや制作の過程が共有されました。発表後には、登壇者と参加者のあいだで会話が広がり、異なる関心や活動が思いがけないかたちでつながる場面も。多様なクリエイティブな実践や視点、文化的背景が交差する場所としての京都を、改めて感じる時間となりました。

🌿 Monthly Check-in Presentation & Exchange Vol.2 – Event Report

Our second Monthly Check-in Presentation & Exchange brought together six guest speakers from a range of backgrounds and generations.

Through presentations on contemporary art, traditional crafts, museum research, and community-based fieldwork, each speaker shared the insights, questions, and discoveries that emerged during their time in Kyoto.

The evening offered a valuable opportunity to reflect on Kyoto as a place where diverse creative practices, perspectives, and cultural experiences come together.

ACAMは、アーティスト、キュレーター、文化機関、地域コミュニティをつなぎ、プロジェクトの実現を支えるコーディネーションの実践に焦点を当てた年次ミーティングです。

Residency Period: Minimum one month between September and December 2026

We are inviting international creators to take part in a residency programme in Kyoto, hosted across three different sites: KYOTO LAUNDRY CAFE, Kyodo Shoko, and Toji-in Residence. The host residences are newly selected micro-residency spaces, supported by the *** in Residence Kyoto office, and many are still shaping their approach to hosting creators. This programme therefore has an experimental character.

Each site offers a distinct setting, from community-based spaces and private libraries to social practice-oriented residences. We welcome creators who are interested in developing their practice through local encounters, everyday activities, cultural exchange, and site-responsive processes.

【Monthly Check-in Presentation & Exchange】

Asterisk-in-Residence Kyoto is a project supported by City of Kyoto, designed to foster “creative residencies” that connect international creators with the cultural contexts, people, and places of Kyoto.
Starting in June 2026, Asterisk-in-Residence Kyoto will launch a monthly presentation + exchange event on the second Thursday of every month. This gathering invites international creators staying in Kyoto to share their self-introductions, ongoing research, creative processes, and reflections from their time in the city. Rather than focusing on finished outcomes, each session creates an open space to share work-in-progress ideas and connect with Kyoto-based cultural practitioners, businesses, students, residency organizations, and local communities.
