RPS KYOTO PAPEROLES Grant Recipient Yufan Lu Solo Exhibition: Return
October 24–November 1, 2026

RPS KYOTO PAPEROLES is pleased to present Return, a solo exhibition by Yufan Lu, recipient of its inaugural exhibition grant.
The project was selected by the five grant judges: Alexa Becker, Erik Vroons, Giuseppe Oliverio, Staton Winter, and Marina Paulenka.
Yufan Lu will travel to Japan for the exhibition, and an opening reception and artist talk will be held on the opening day. Further details about the talk will be announced on our social media channels.
We look forward to welcoming you to the exhibition.

Return (2020–)

In my work Return (2020–), I use a thermal camera to carry out a remembrance ritual after my laolao—my maternal grandmother—passed away.
I use my body to live as my laolao did in her home, capturing traces of my own body—a body through which my laolao’s blood runs. I trace the touch of my hand across my laolao’s belongings, thinking of how she once cherished them. I stroke my laolao’s image in old photographs, just as I once held her with my hands, leaving my warmth on her body.
When my laolao was diagnosed with late-stage cancer, the COVID-19 pandemic was spreading. Thermal cameras were widely used in public spaces across China to monitor people’s biometric data as part of pandemic-control measures.
I transform this top-down, authoritative tool into an emotional medium through which I express my grief and contemplate life and death, while visualizing time, memory, and the photograph’s punctum. Having grown up in a typical Chinese family, where expressing love is often seen as embarrassing, I feel closer to my laolao through this work than ever before.

Born in Tianjin, China, in 1991. Yufan Lu is currently based in Tianjin and Helsinki, Finland.
Lu’s work takes a variety of forms, including still and moving images, sculpture, installation, and photobooks. Rather than describing herself as a multidisciplinary artist, she considers herself “a photographer who photographs with all kinds of materials at hand.”

Her work has been exhibited internationally and has received recognition including a PHMuseum Grant New Generation honorable mention, the Firecracker Photography Grant, and the Encontros da Imagem Photobook Award.

《Make Me Beautiful》

RPS KYOTO PAPEROLES

©︎Yufan Lu / Make Me Beautiful

We are delighted to share wonderful news from Yufan Lu, the first-ever grant recipient of RPS KYOTO PAPEROLES, whose exhibition with us is scheduled to take place from October 24 to November 1, 2026.

Her photobook dummy, Make Me Beautiful, has received the 5th Star Photobook Dummy Award.
The project was highly recognized for its critical and deeply personal engagement with beauty standards and the ways in which they shape, discipline, and intervene in the body.

Make Me Beautiful is a sharply observant project that examines the ideals of beauty imposed on the body.
Placing herself at the center of the work, Lu visits beauty clinics and allows herself to become the subject of diagnosis, recommendation, and the promise of transformation into a “more beautiful” self.
Through this process, the expectations, evaluations, and interventions directed toward young women’s bodies emerge with quiet humor and unsettling clarity.

Sterile medical spaces devoted to beauty.
Handwritten notes, cut-out fragments, and traces of social media.
Across the spreads of the book, these elements reveal how “beauty” is not simply a matter of personal desire, but something repeatedly presented, persuaded into us, and gradually internalized through society.

What the work asks is not merely whether cosmetic procedures are good or bad.
Rather, it asks: who defines beauty?
How do those standards enter our bodily awareness and sense of self?
And how do we hold on to ourselves while moving between the desire to change, the need to accept, and the impulse to resist?

We warmly congratulate Yufan Lu on this important recognition.
Her grant exhibition at RPS KYOTO PAPEROLES has now been confirmed for October 24 to November 1, 2026, and we are greatly looking forward to developing this presentation together with her.

Please stay tuned.

RPS KYOTO PAPEROLES

On Saturday, May 24, from 2:00 PM, we held the public presentation for the photobook-making workshop “PHOTOBOOK AS OBJECT 2026 KYOTO.”

We welcomed many visitors throughout the day, as each participant presented their individual project.
In addition to sharing the process that led to their current dummy books, participants also spoke openly about the challenges, uncertainties, repeated experimentation, and shifts in perspective they encountered throughout the making process.

As they explored the relationships between photographs, participants reflected on how the structure and rhythm of a book can shape the way a work or narrative is communicated, and how each editorial decision influences the impression and reading of the work. Each presentation conveyed an ongoing process of deepening thought and experimentation through engagement with the photobook as a form.

Many insights extending beyond the act of making itself also emerged through conversations with instructors Yumi Goto and Jan Rosseel, including the importance of establishing editorial rules, developing questions through one’s own trial and error, and intentionally stepping into unfamiliar methods or approaches.

Before and after the presentations, visitors and participants gathered around the dummy books and engaged in direct conversations while turning through the pages together, exchanging impressions and thoughts about each project.

Because the works were still in progress rather than finalized, many honest and open discussions emerged. For the participants, this became a valuable opportunity to reconsider their own works and reflect on future possibilities and directions.

Encountering different perspectives and interpretations also revealed unexpected aspects within the projects and opened up new directions that participants themselves had not previously recognized. It was particularly striking to see how dialogue around the dummy books functioned as an extension of the creative process itself.

We look forward to seeing how the participating artists of 2026 will continue to develop their photobooks from this point onward, and to encountering their further-evolved works in the near future.

RPS KYOTO PAPEROLES will take a short pause until the next program.
We hope you will continue to look forward to our future activities.

Starting May 29, “Photobook as Object 2026 TOKYO” will begin.
Please stay tuned for its upcoming developments as well.

#8 Alena Zhandarova(Russia)
Title :

My great grand-father Pavel Zhandarov participated in the Russian-Japanese war in the beginning of 20th century. He was captivated and lived in Japan for several years. Our family knew nothing about his life there before recent times. We found out that his story was quite famous due to widespread use in newspapers. That's how I've met him, due to an article in the Kainan Shinbun (October 1st, 1904).
This project is an attempt to meet my great grandfather through time, listen to his story and tell my own.
・What did you learn or gain through this workshop?
I actually don't remember, but I know about this project several years already.
・Through the process so far, what key questions or themes have become clearer to you?
I understood the direction of how to find an approach to my project and make it clearer.

・Was there any feedback or advice that left a strong impression on you?
All of the advice was very supportive and helped me look at the project from different angles.

・What is the current (working) title of your project, and what does it mean to you?
I don't have a title yet.

・Who do you imagine as the audience or reader of your work?
Any person who turns to his memories or wants to delve deeper into the study of their roots.
・How would you like to further develop or present this project after the workshop?
I can already see what else I'd like to work on, what I'd like to delve into. It's more about clarity of visual expression, and yes, I'd like to publish it.

Title : HOMO LUDENS

『Homo Ludens』

#7 Britta Baumann(Germany)

Title :HOMO LUDENS

My project explores the figure of my father and different ideas of fatherhood. It centers on the contrast between conventional family roles and the reality of an unconventional, playful single father.

For him, play was not secondary—it was his way of being in the world, even when it meant taking risks.

In this work, I combine and rework family archive photographs with my own still lifes, text, and objects through collages and physical interventions. The father figure doesn't appear as a fixed portrait, but as a shifting role between care, deviation, and freedom.

Homo Ludens is not a linear biography, but the continuation of an attitude. My father’s playful character lives on through my artistic treatment of the material—making playfulness physically experienceable through the form of a book.

・What did you learn or gain through this workshop?
Coming into this workshop with an already advanced dummy and previous experience in bookmaking, my goal was not to learn the basics, but to challenge my own established structures. What I gained most was the rare luxury of uninterrupted, highly focused time to deep-dive into my project in this immersive environment.

・Through the process so far, what key questions or themes have become clearer to you?
The process made me realize that some projects and books simply need time. Some take less, others take much longer—sometimes years—and you have to accept that. Patience is essential when it comes to developing, shaping, and creating a photobook. Constructing stories, especially family stories, requires not just emotional strength, but above all, patience, if you want to bring them to the point in an authentic, non-pathetic way. There are just so many individual aspects to look at and carefully balance out.

・Was there any feedback or advice that left a strong impression on you?
More than a single piece of advice, it was the dynamic of the feedback that left the strongest impression. Having the constant opportunity to get quick, immediate, and direct feedback from the mentors Yumi and Jan whenever I faced a new design decision was incredibly valuable. This fast-paced exchange kept my momentum going and gave me the confidence to make radical, spontaneous changes to my dummy.

・What is the current (working) title of your project, and what does it mean to you?
The title of the project is 'Homo Ludens' (The Playing Human). It explores the figure of my father and the contrast between conventional ideas of fatherhood and the lived reality of an unconventional, playful single father. For him, play and humor were a philosophy and a resilient way of going through life, especially during difficult and painful moments. I learned this lifestyle from him. By interacting with the family archive through collage, montage, and physical intervention, I am not just reconstructing a biography; I am continuing his attitude and keeping his way of living alive.

・Who do you imagine as the audience or reader of your work?
I imagine readers who appreciate the photobook as an independent art form. More than anything, I want them to feel entertained and find joy in playing along with the book and discovering the hidden layers and connections. Even though the project comes from my personal archive, it touches on universal themes like memory and family. I hope it allows readers to relate to it and reflect on their own family stories and biographies.

・How would you like to further develop or present this project after the workshop?
My next step is to process the breakthroughs from this week and refine this new version of the dummy. In the long run, I plan to publish 'Homo Ludens' as a limited-edition artist book and would love to see how this concept could be translated into a small exhibition or spatial installation.

Title :ZANKEI

This work explores place and family time through the perspective of a cat rescued in 2012 from Futaba, Fukushima, following the nuclear accident. A being that once lived elsewhere is welcomed into a family and begins to share time with people.

In daily life, smells, sounds, and tactile sensations become inscribed in the body, while the environment and time continue to change. At the same time, Futaba in Fukushima also remains largely as it was, while undergoing subtle change.

By leaving a place and returning to it again, it emerges as a landscape that is both the same and yet different. This work is an attempt to capture the relationships and sensory experiences generated through this movement back and forth, from the perspective of the cat.

・What did you learn or gain through this workshop?
I realized that photographs I had once considered unnecessary actually played a very important role within the work. This was something I could only understand by having a variety of people view the work—and something I would not have discovered if I had not participated in this workshop.

・Through the process so far, what key questions or themes have become clearer to you?
I learned that even within the same project, simply changing the perspective can lead to a completely different way of seeing—and result in a different work altogether.

・Was there any feedback or advice that left a strong impression on you?
Everything needs a reason—why I do it, and why it is done that way.And to consider a wide range of possibilities—to examine my project from different angles, and to pursue it more deeply and thoroughly.

・What is the current (working) title of your project, and what does it mean to you?
残景(ZANKEI)
Landscapes where what is no longer there, and time that cannot be returned to, still seem to linger.
Something not entirely gone—where the present and the past gently overlap.

・Who do you imagine as the audience or reader of your work?
everyone

・How would you like to further develop or present this project after the workshop?
continuation of the project,re-editing,publication, exhibition.

Title : Failed Linearity

Title : Failed Linearity
As a child, I had a particular affection for railroads. I dreamed that one day I would become a train operator. My family lived in a small town in the far north of Western Siberia. There were no trains in our area, and I really wanted a railway to appear there one day. Once, an adult told me about abandoned rail tracks and wooden barracks hidden in the forest outside the city limits. I learned the history of their origin much later.

From 1947 to 1953, one of Stalin’s large-scale construction projects took place in the post-war USSR. Prisoners of the Gulag and civilian workers were building the Chum–Salekhard–Igarka railway under difficult northern conditions. The route was supposed to stretch for 1,480 kilometres along the Arctic Circle, connecting the Ob and Yenisei rivers and serving the construction of a new seaport. In the sixth year of construction, when almost half of the track was already functioning, Stalin died. Soon after the death of its main ideologist, the railway itself fell silent. The project was declared inexpedient and abandoned. According to historians based on archival research, the number of prisoners involved in the construction could have reached one hundred thousand people. Many of their names remain unknown.

In Failed Linearity, I combine archival photographs, found objects, and materials produced during my expeditions to the Russian North. The project reflects on unfulfilled ambitions and unresolved trauma embedded in the Soviet past. During the Soviet period, the USSR carried out numerous large-scale infrastructure projects that relied on forced labor and emerged within a broader system of repression. That railway was one of many such undertakings.

Soviet power rested on the myth of a promised future, a future built through the fate of many people and ultimately led the system itself toward collapse. More than half a century later, repressive policies and state terror have never been fully confronted or collectively processed, while their echoes continue to surface in the present.

・What did you learn or gain through this workshop?
I more understood the process of working with a huge amount of images and the structure building. I also found that the way to work with a paper and making lots of experiments helps me not to get stuck.

・Through the process so far, what key questions or themes have become clearer to you?
The structure question, the way to work with a big amount of diverse material and sequencing images. Also I've got more understanding about photobook as a medium in general. I have a lot of new things to reflect on.

・Was there any feedback or advice that left a strong impression on you?
Dragan has a good one which was actually the quote from Alec Soth, it says something like "your book has to be only 52 images, like the size of pack of playing cards". That somehow helped not to get dug up in hundreds of images. There were many good other advices both from mentors and participants.

・What is the current (working) title of your project, and what does it mean to you?
It is Failed Linearity. To be honest that title was offered for me during the residency and I kinda like it, but I didn't have much time yet to reflect on it deeper. I like the association with a failed line, as it refers to the topics: the abandoned railway, the general idea of fallen state built on the violence, and how that unfinished and unreflected trauma is getting back or echoing now.

・Who do you imagine as the audience or reader of your work?
It is specific historical topic that can be hard to understand for the viewer outside of Russia and Europe. However, the subject of collective trauma can be more universal and I would like to carefully search in that direction.

・How would you like to further develop or present this project after the workshop?
I plan to stretch the current structure and make another version of the dummy closer to its complete shape. I also plan to work with texts, testimonies and family images to include them in the book. And another and another version until I feel the book is complete.
