今月19日に十勝地方南西部の飛行調査を行いました。小型機から営巣・抱卵中のタンチョウを確認する調査です。
写真は日高山脈から東に伸びる丘陵地の上を飛んでいる時のものですが、雪景色の日高山脈が綺麗です。今年は平野部の残雪がほとんど無く、丘陵部にほんの僅か残っているだけでした。
We conducted aerial surveys in the southwestern Tokachi region, using a small airplane to locate red-crowned cranes that were nesting or incubating eggs.
The first two photos were taken while flying over the hilly area stretching east from the Hidaka Mountains, and they show the beautiful, snow-covered range. This year, almost no snow remained on the plains, while a small amount was still left in the hills.

カウント調査で牧場横の給餌場に集まってきたタンチョウの足環を読んでいたところ、後ろから上着を引っ張られました。何とこの牧場のポニーが一緒にお手伝い？　したいようです。
車で待機していた仲間の調査員がスマホでスナップ写真を撮ってくれました。
When I was trying to read the numbers on the leg ring of a red-crowned crane that had gathered with other individuals at the feeding station right next to the paddock, something pulled me back by my jacket. I guess the ponies in this paddock wanted to help me. My fellow surveyor, who was waiting in the car, took these snapshots with his smartphone.

冬のカウント調査中に遭遇したシーンです。雪の溶け始めたデントコーン畑で餌取りをしていたタンチョウの１羽が鹿柵に絡まっているのを見つけました。早速助けに向かった際の写真です。
仲間のツル達は「何だなんだ！！」と集まっていました。
　大急ぎで助けに駆けつけたところ、まだ元気だったツルが逃げようとして暴れた際に、絡まっていた脚が網から外れました。幸いこのツルのダメージは大きくなかったようで、仲間の後を追って飛んで行きました。
This is a scene that we encountered during the winter count survey. We found a red-crowned crane foraging in a dent corn field where the snow had just started to melt, tangled in deer fencing. This photo was taken when we rushed over to rescue it. The other cranes were gathered around it, as if wondering what was going on.
When we quickly approached to help, the crane—still energetic enough to move—tried to run away. It then managed to free its leg from the fencing on its own. Fortunately, it was not seriously injured and was able to follow the others as they flew away.

鳥インフルエンザ対策として、ねぐらを監視しているカメラにクロヅルが映っていました。直前の一斉カウント調査では見つかっていなかったのですが、どこにいたのでしょうか？
The camera installed to monitor the roosting site of red-crowned cranes as a precaution against bird flu captured a Eurasian crane. There had been no sign of it during the count survey conducted just beforehand. Where on earth had it been?

阿寒給餌場で調査中に出会ったシーンです。1羽だけ群から少し離れて低いフェンス越しにヒトと対峙していました。身近でヒトを観察したいタンチョウもいるということでしょうか。
This is a scene we encountered while conducting a survey at the Akan feeding site. One crane stood slightly apart from the flock, facing a person across a low fence. Perhaps some red-crowned cranes are curious enough to observe humans up close.

1月中旬現在でも道東の平野は雪の少ない状態が続いていますが、根室地方北部の中標津ではご覧の通りすっかり雪の中です。無人の給餌装置にはタンチョウの他に可愛いお客さんが現れました。60メートルほど離れた防風林から雪の上を飛び跳ねてきた足跡が残っていました。やはり今冬初めて現れたノスリはニオに住み着いているノネズミを狙ってきたのでしょうか？
Even as of mid-January, the plains of eastern Hokkaido remain relatively snow-free, but in Naka-Shibetsu in the northern Nemuro region, as you can see, everything is completely covered in snow. At the unattended feeding station, an adorable visitor appeared in addition to the red-crowned cranes. Footprints showed that it had hopped across the snow from a windbreak forest about 60 meters away. Perhaps the buzzard, which appeared for the first time this winter, was targeting the field voles living in the manure?

今年も十勝にナベヅルが来ています。鶴居村にもおそらく別の１羽来ているようです。今のところ積雪が少なく風が強いので、畑での餌が見つかりやすいのでしょう。
A Hooded Crane is staying in Tokachi again this year, and it appears that another individual is also present in the Tsurui Village area. As there has been little snowfall so far and the winds have been strong, it is probably easier for the cranes to find food in the fields.

監視カメラが捉えた元旦の釧路川のねぐらの様子です。当地ではカメラの設置後にクマ出没のニュースがあり、河川管理を行なっている開発局担当者と情報交換を行なっています。鳥インフルエンザによる異常も感じられない新年のねぐら風景です。
These photos were captured by a camera trap installed on the Kushiro River bank, showing a roosting site of red-crowned cranes on January 1, 2026. After the camera was installed, there were reports of a bear appearing in the area, so we have been exchanging information with the officials of the Development Bureau responsible for river management. There are no signs of abnormalities related to avian influenza.

標茶町東部にあり、大きな給餌場と繁殖地にも隣接している中茶安別小中学校でタンチョウ学習が行われています。当日は近所で長年給餌されている丸山さんが３・４年生クラスの児童に、当地での給餌の歴史や苦労話などのお話をされました。標茶町は世界一多くのタンチョウが営巣している町です。
Nakachaanbetsu Elementary and Junior High School, located next to a large feeding field and a breeding site in the eastern part of Shibecha Town, offers classes that focus on learning about the red-crowned crane. On that day, Mr. Maruyama, who has been feeding red-crowned cranes for many years, gave a talk on the history of crane feeding and the challenges he has faced. Shibecha Town is known as the place where more cranes nest than anywhere else in the world.

収穫の終ったトウモロコシ畑は大型の鳥たちの格好な餌場です。条件の良い畑では写真のようにいくつかの種が降りています。釧路湿原周辺ではこのようにヒシクイとタンチョウのコンビが普通ですが、オホーツクや十勝地方ではここに大白鳥の群れが加わります。同じ畑でも、タンチョウよりもずっと遠くにいるガン類の方がもう首を上げて警戒を始めていますね。
The post-harvest corn field is an ideal feeding ground for large birds. Well-maintained fields like the one in the photo attract several bird species. It is quite common to see a combination of red-crowned cranes and bean geese around the Kushiro wetlands, whereas in the Okhotsk and Tokachi areas, groups of large swans are often found together with these two species. The geese, which were much farther away from us than the red-crowned cranes, began to show signs of alarm by raising their heads.

事故に遭って飛べないところを保護され、野外生活に耐えられるまでに回復したタンチョウを、非繁殖鳥が残っている釧路川沿いに放鳥しました。
この個体は骨に異常があるので飛べないかもしれないとのことでしたので、頑張って生き抜いてほしいとの思いから、
やはりロシアの侵攻に耐えて頑張っているウクライナの国旗の色をカラーリングの組み合わせに選びました。放鳥から３ヶ月近くが経過した8月31日、何と山を超えた10km離れた
別水系の牧場で元気にしているのが確認されました。この牧場には１ヶ月ほど前に現れたそうで、以後ずっと牧場内で暮らしているそうです。さらにこの牧場には頼もしい仲間がいました。
放し飼いにしている犬が近ずくキツネを追い払ってくれるので、外敵からは守られているとのこと、カラーリングのパワーでしょうか？

We released a red-crowned crane that had recovered from injuries caused by an accident along the Kushiro River, where some non-breeding cranes are still found. This crane is considered to be able to survive in the wild, but it may not be able to fly because some damage remains in its bones. We sincerely hope for its survival, which is why we chose leg rings with the flag colors of Ukraine, a nation that continues to resist Russia’s invasion.

On August 31, three months after the release, the crane was confirmed to be doing well in farmland near a water source different from the Kushiro River. Surprisingly, it had crossed a mountain and moved about 10 km from the release site. The bird seems to have appeared in this farmland about a month ago, and it has been living there since.

Interestingly, it has a reliable companion on this farm—a dog. The dog, which is not leashed, is able to scare away approaching foxes. Could this protection from predators be another effect of the crane’s Ukraine-colored rings?
