If you don't have a tent, you should. Don't go to one of those boutique camping shops - just buy one at Hirose. (Make sure it has a fly to keep the rain and heat out.)
You can pretty much camp anywhere in Kumamoto. Two rules: no open flames, and clean up after yourself (buy the local garbage disposal bags). I was only asked to move once, about 100 yards down the road, and was fine.
Tents are also useful for disaster relief. I have three of various sizes which I allocated to my neighbors at the disaster ground during the quakes.　- William

Aso is known for, amongst other things, its cows. Dairy is a big business there. On the edge of the caldera is a village called Tawarayama (俵山) which has a Michinoeki (道の駅). If you stop there, not only can you get a wonderful view of the Aso caldera, but you can get the best ice cream that you will ever eat in your life. And who doesn't love ice cream? - William

If you have a car, or have a friend with a car, or know someone who is not really a "friend" but has a car, now is the time to visit Mt Kimpo. Drive to the base and take either of two routes: "Sarusuberi" (Monkey Slip which drives in a straight line up the slope) or the road, which I recommend: it curves gently around the mountain, allowing views of Tamana and the Ariake Sea and Mt Unzen across the bay in Nagasaki. Kimpo is a dormant volcano (or at least we hope for the duration of your visit) with a caldera aligned with Unzen and Aso;. The slopes are cultivated with a variety of fruit which can be bought at roadside stalls. Recommended is Yuhoen Fruits Land https://tinyurl.com/2yzjvu4a , which raises free-range chicken among the steep slopes of their vineyards. You can pick fruit and enjoy a jidori or ayu meal at their streamside restaurant. - William

If you're out and about and smell something that smells vaguely like bubble gum, you're probably smelling Osmanthus fragrans, more commonly known as "fragrant olive" (the leaves look like olive but they share no genetic trait). Called "kinmokusei" in Japanese, it is is a delightful harbinger of autumn. - William

There's lotsa Genia of bats in Japan, such as the common bent-wing bat, the gloomy tube-nosed bat, the Japanese pipistrelle, the least horseshoe bat, the long-tailed myotis, the reddish-black myotis, the Ryukyu flying fox, the Siberian bat, and the Yaeyama little horseshoe bat. The best way to distinguish them is just to ask them directly. They tend to migrate to the Eurasion continent for the summer and return to winter here. They are back. Look for an empty spot of sky such as a parking lot for good viewing. They eat nasty insects so are your friends. - William

Back in the old days when travel was mostly by sea, Amakusa was closer to Shimabara than it was to Kumamoto proper. The page Samurai Legacy has a piece on Amakusa Shiro, a Christian convert who in 1637 led a rebellion against the nascent Tokugawa shogunate, which was duly crushed; he was executed at the age of 17 and his head was displayed on a pike near Nagasaki as a warning to Christians. A statue of his is erected in Amakusa.
Per the Facebook post:
In 1637, the peasants of Shimabara and the Amakusa islands stopped paying. Taxes had been set at a level the land could not produce, collection was brutal, and Christianity had been outlawed in a region full of Christians.
What they did not have was anyone who knew how to fight a war.
They chose a sixteen-year-old named Amakusa Shiro. His father had served a lord who lost everything at Sekigahara, which left the son a masterless nobody — but still, by birth, a samurai. He could have kept his head down and waited for a household to take him in. Men in his position did exactly that.
He took command of about 37,000 farmers instead.
They seized an abandoned castle at Hara and held it for three months against an army of over 120,000 while the shogunate ran out of ideas and eventually borrowed Dutch cannon to shell it from the sea.
He was seventeen when it ended. Japan stayed closed to the outside world for the next 200 years.　‐ William
