A tour isn't just about the music.

Between performances, our musicians got to experience Japan properly. We shared meals, explored lesser know districts and made the most of every spare hour between soundchecks and performances.

Ramen. Sushi. Takoyaki. Gyoza. Even A Grade Wagyu! So much more food that we couldn't pronounce but still managed to demolish. Castles and shrines filled the gaps between gigs, along with late-night convenience store runs that somehow became a highlight in their own right.

Some of the best moments came from new friendships, Japanese musicians and locals who took the time to get to know us and made the whole thing feel less like a tour and more like an actual cultural exchange. Music helps with that.

Watching everyone navigate chopsticks, shrine etiquette and karaoke menus was it's own kind of performance. The food was of course, unbelievably great, but the company was even better!

It's time to share some of our memorable performances in Japan!

On Thursday 4 December 2025, we had the privilege
of playing a show at Live in Buddy, a jazz club well regarded in Tokyo's big band and jazz orchestra scene. Joined by the phenomenally talented Swing Crystal Orchestra from Chuo University, both bands thrilled the packed audience with some classic charts and upbeat tunes.

Here's our rendition of "Can't Buy Me Love" featuring Angus on vocals.

A plane, a couple of coaches, and more walking than anyone signed up for. But it was the trains that stole the show and we're not even mad.

20 musicians, a mountain of luggage and instruments, and a packed schedule across multiple cities means you spend a lot of time on Japan's legendary rail network. And honestly some of our favourite memories happened on the platforms and carriages.

The laughs, the exhausted naps, the slowly dawning realisation that everything in Japan actually runs on time (to the millisecond). The scramble to make sure everyone made it on board before the doors closed.

Japan's trains run on precision. By the end, our musicians did too; lugging cases, instruments and gear through platforms packed with locals who had absolutely no idea what to make of us. Not your typical tour, but we loved every second of it.

First Stop: Tokyo

Our 20 musicians landed in Japan and hit the ground running, performing six shows across one of the world's greatest cities. Bringing Queensland's Big Band sound to Japanese audiences, we got to watch our musicians step up and absolutely deliver!

We collaborated with trumpet legend Eric Miyashiro at Showa University, performed at Ishimori Winds, took over a secret basement club at Otoheya Square with Keio University's Light Music Society, shared the stage with the Swing Crystal Orchestra from Chuo University at Live in Buddy, headlined our own night at B-Flat Jazz Club and closed the Tokyo leg of our trip with a public set at Aoyama Farmer's Markets in the heart of the city.

What a way to start the tour! Tokyo gave us a welcome we won't forget. Stay tuned for more....

A few months ago, 20 young musicians from Queensland made history.

In late November and early December 2025, the QYO Big Band embarked on their first ever International tour. Two incredible weeks performing across Japan.

Tokyo. Yokohama. Osaka. Kyoto. Kobe.

We've been sitting on so many photos, stories and memories, and we think it's time we shared them.

Over the coming weeks, we're taking you with us. City by city, show by show. Come and relive this fantastic experience with us.

And Japan, we haven't stopped thinking about you! 🇯🇵🇦🇺
