City Zoo collects used mobile phones and smartphones in partnership with the NPO Terra Renaissance, as part of their "Mobile Phones for Congo" project. Recycling these devices helps reduce demand for conflict minerals mined in the Democratic Republic of Congo: minerals whose extraction fuels regional conflict and destroys habitat. Each device donated contributes ¥30 toward supporting people affected by the conflict in Congo.
京都市動物園では、認定NPO法人テラ・ルネッサンスと連携し、不要になった携帯電話・スマートフォンを回収しています（「ケータイ for コンゴ」プロジェクト）。コンゴ民主共和国では、スマホなどに使われるレアメタル（紛争鉱物）をめぐる紛争が続いており、その解決支援とともに、鉱山開発による森林破壊で生息数が減少しているゴリラの保全にもつながる取り組みです。回収した端末1台につき30円がコンゴでの紛争被害者の自立支援に活用されます。

Got a "junk drawer" overflowing with old power banks and e-cigarettes because you just aren't sure how to toss them? We've got great news!
The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the Ministry of the Environment are updating Japan's Small Home Appliance Recycling Act. During fiscal year 2026, four new categories will officially join the national recycling list:
📌 The New "Recycle-Ready" Items:
Heated To***co Devices (iQOS, Ploom, etc.)
E-Cigarette Devices
Mobile Batteries (Power Banks)
Portable Power Stations (Large backup batteries)
🔥 Why the change? Safety First!
Lithium-ion batteries (LiBs) are everyday lifesavers, but they can be tiny firestarters if tossed in the wrong bin. In FY2024 alone, these batteries caused 312 reported fires at recycling facilities! Bringing these items into the official recycling fold will help create a safer, nationwide network of certified drop-off points.
⚠️ A Friendly Reminder from Gomimap:
Until the new systems are fully up and running, please NEVER throw these items into your regular combustible or plastic bins. They can easily ignite inside garbage trucks or processing centers. 🚒💨
