Miki Sakiyama gained practical, field-ready skills through the FY2024 Primary Course of the Program for Global Human Resource Development for Peacebuilding and Development, commissioned by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan.

“The session was really practical ... for example, how to develop your work plan, which needs to be aligned with the teams, the country offices, and the organization's strategy.”

🌐🌐🌐⁠

Now serving as a women and youth empowerment specialist at the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), Miki participated in the Course, held mainly in Hiroshima, from January to February 2025. She found the diverse perspectives of fellow participants and the highly practical training content valuable to fulfil her current role in the UN system.

Having previously supported development projects from Japan, Miki decided to join the Course so she would be able to work directly in developing countries and gain on-the-ground experience. She highly recommends the Course to those who wish to pursue a career in international cooperation as an opportunity to systematically learn the skills and mindset required for fieldwork.

Nearly at the end of her one-year assignment with UNFPA, Miki compares herself today to what she was before the Course:

“It's a huge difference for me. I became more proactive, more tough.”

Loretta Dilu from Papua New Guinea participated in a UNITAR training programme on sea and human security, and is now working to advance environmental conservation and sustainable development in her community. Her journey demonstrates how knowledge and individual action can drive to positive change and help build a more resilient future.

食料安全保障分野の専門家である境達樹さんは、外務省委託（2024年度）平和構築・開発におけるグローバル人材育成事業「プライマリー・コース」に参加しました。
4週間の対面研修の日々は刺激的で、多様なバックグラウンドを持つ研修員と切磋琢磨しながら学び合いました。
「それぞれの国に戻った後も、仲間とのつながりは続いていくと確信しています。…この仲間との関係は、私にとってかけがえのないものです。」

世界食糧計画（WFP）トーゴ事務所で農業支援や学校給食に関するプログラムに携わっている達樹さんは、今後も食料安全保障の改善に貢献し続けたいと考えています。
受講した「プライマリー・コース」では、キャリアに関するセッションにとりわけ感銘を受けました。競争が非常に激しい国連という環境を生き抜き、活躍してきた講師陣から、様々な知識やヒントを得ることができたそうです。

Tatsuki Sakai from Japan is passionate about improving food security, especially in Africa. To broaden his horizons, he participated in the FY2024 Primary Course of the Program for Global Human Resource Development for Peacebuilding and Development, commissioned by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan.
Building on his experiences at the Embassy of Japan in the Republic of Cameroon and JICA Tanzania and learning with Program Associates from diverse backgrounds had a profound impact on him.
“This relationship with the peers is invaluable to me.”

The Primary Course was held mainly in Hiroshima, from January to February 2025. Tatsuki found the career development sessions especially helpful, working backwards from his desired career outcomes and setting SMART objectives to achieve them. He’s looking forward to applying these concepts in his daily work at WFP Togo, where he supports agricultural management and school feeding programmes.

国連人口基金（UNFPA）スリランカ事務所で女性および若者のエンパワーメント専門官として勤務している実樹さんは、2025年1月から2月にかけて、主に広島で開催された外務省委託（2024年度）平和構築・開発におけるグローバル人材育成事業「プライマリー・コース」に参加しました。豊かな経験をもつ仲間から得た多角的な視点はもちろん、実践的な研修内容が特に現場での職務に役立っていると話しています。

それまで日本国内で開発途上国のプロジェクトをサポートしていた実樹さんは、現場での経験を積みたいと強く思い、「プライマリー・コース」に参加しました。派遣前に現地での職務に必要なスキルやマインドを体系立てて学ぶことができるため、国際協力のキャリアに進みたい人に勧めたいと⁠述べています。
