Regular Meeting on April 18th

今日は、3月に入会した TM T さんが Ice Breaker Speech に挑戦してくれました。
T さんは、Toastmasters に入ろうと思った理由を、落ち着いた語り口で話してくれました。スピーチに挑戦することで、消極的な自分を乗り越えて自信をつけたいこと。そして、その気持ちの背景には、10年前の海外での経験があることも教えてくれました。

言葉を一つひとつ丁寧に選びながら話す姿から、これまでたくさん英語の本を読んできた T さんらしさが伝わってきました。これからどんなスピーチを聞かせてくれるのか、とても楽しみです。

そして今日は、ちょっとした新しい試みもありました。
定例会では、ジョークや準備スピーチ、テーブルトピックスなど、学びになる話がたくさん出てきます。
そこで、「ただ聴くだけじゃもったいないよね。質問タイムを作ってみたら？」というメンバーの声を受けて、各セッションのあとに短い Q&A タイムを入れてみました。
初めての試み、どうだったでしょう。
結果はまた次回のブログでお伝えしますね。

Regular Meeting on April 4th

今日は、初めてのゲストが参加してくださいました。
以前から Toastmasters に興味があり、ネット検索で当クラブを見つけてくださったとのことです。お越しいただき、ありがとうございました！

準備スピーチは２つでした。最初のスピーチのタイトルはTM Tさんによる”Your Choice, My Choice”でした。
私たちは日々、数えきれないほどの選択をしながら生きています。
Tさんは、この一年で「日本語スピーチコンテストに出場する」という大きな選択をした経験を語ってくれました。
小さな選択の積み重ねが、大きな選択につながっていく･･･そんな示唆に富んだスピーチでした。

次のスピーチのタイトルは”Unlucky News”。TM Sさんによる心温まるスピーチでした。
障がいを持つ息子さんが外で思いがけない事故に遭ったと知り、動揺したというSさん。しかし、息子さんが自分で状況を判断し、落ち着いて対処できた姿を見て、心配が安堵へと変わっていった様子を語ってくれました。
聴いている私たちも心を掴まれる、優しさの余韻が残るスピーチでした。

Regular Meeting on March 21st

東京の桜は満開を迎え、風に舞う花びらが美しい季節になりました。
3月二回目の定例会では、準備スピーチの時間に『2022年 Toastmasters 世界大会の優勝スピーチ』を視聴しました。
スピーカーは、ジンバブエ出身の Cyril Junior Dim さん。
進行役の TM T さんが、スピーチをより深く理解できるよう、ビデオを流す前にいくつかのキーワードを紹介してくれたのが印象的でした。
今回のスピーチテーマは 『他人と違う自分』。
ずっとネガティブに捉えていた自分を、どのようにポジティブに受け入れられるようになったのか、その過程を描いたストーリーです。
誰もが自分に置き換えて考えられる内容で、勇気をもらえる素晴らしいスピーチでした。

世界チャンピオンのスピーチは、間の取り方、ユーモアの挟み方、聴衆の巻き込み方 など、学べるポイントが本当に多いですね。
YouTube でも視聴できますので、皆さんもぜひご覧ください。

テーブルトピックスでは、「食べ物」をテーマにした質問が次々と出されました。
・春を連想する食べ物は？
・やめられないジャンクフードは？
・故郷のお勧めの郷土料理は？　などなど…
「ジャンクフードはラーメン」「郷土料理は長崎チャンポン」というスピーチが続き、
皆んな無性に麺が食べたくなってしまいました。

Regular Meeting on March 7th

It’s a tough season for those with hay fever, but the cherry blossoms will be blooming soon.

Our regular meeting began with a spring-like celebration — a new member induction ceremony. Welcome, TM T! We’re excited to have you with us and look forward to your Ice Breaker speech.

Since we had no prepared speeches today, we held a special “Get to Know You” session. Everyone filled out an anonymous self‑introduction sheet, which we read aloud at random and tried to guess whose it was. One of the questions was “What did you want to be when you were a child?” Answers included pilot, scientist, interpreter, nursery school teacher, chef, and many more — a wonderful variety of childhood dreams.

In the Joke Session, TM I entertained us with a joke about “a patient having surgery for the first time and a doctor performing surgery for the first time,” which brought plenty of laughter.

For Table Topics, TM N presented a unique theme: three prompts related to “tables” — tablecloths, tableware, and table manners. Each topic inspired creative and enjoyable responses.

As reflected in today’s Word of the Day, “productive,” it was truly a fruitful and engaging meeting filled with learning and laughter.

Regular Meeting on March 7th

花粉症の方にはつらい季節ですが、桜の開花ももうすぐですね。
今回の定例会は、春らしく入会式からスタートしました。
TM Tさん、ようこそ！これから一緒に活動できることを楽しみにしています。アイスブレークスピーチも期待しています。

準備スピーチのエントリーがなかったため、今日は特別企画として“Get to Know You”セッションを行いました。参加者全員に匿名で自己紹介シートを書いてもらい、ランダムに読み上げて「これは誰でしょう？」と当てるゲームです。

シートには5つの質問があり、「子どもの頃なりたかった職業は？」という質問には、パイロット、科学者、通訳、保育士、シェフなど、皆さんの夢が多彩でとても興味深いものでした。

ジョークセッションでは、TM Iさんが「初めて手術を受ける患者と、初めて手術をする医者」というジョークを披露し、会場は笑いに包まれました。

TM Nさんによるテーブルトピックスは、「テーブル」にまつわる3つのお題 ― テーブルクロス、テーブルウェア、テーブルマナー ―について語るという、とてもユニークな構成でした。

今日の言葉 “productive” のとおり、学びと笑いに満ちた、実り多い定例会となりました。

3/1（日）に幡ヶ谷のJICA東京にてDivision F スピーチコンテストが開催されました。日本語と英語それぞれTable TopicsコンテストとSpeechコンテストが行われ、われらがTM Tさんも日本語スピーチコンテストに出場しました。残念ながら入賞は叶いませんでしたが、これまでの成果を存分に発揮した素晴らしいスピーチでした。

それではまた！来年のコンテストを目指してまいりましょう!

Regular Meeting on Feb 21st

🌸 Late February Meeting – Spring Is in the Air! 🌸

Our second meeting of February was lively and full of energy, with 9 members and 1 guest joining us.

🎤 Prepared Speech
This time, TM T delivered a rehearsal speech for an upcoming Japanese speech contest. Although we are an English-speaking club, members also challenge themselves in Japanese contests. The speech keeps getting better every time we hear it, and we are all excited for the Division Contest on March 1!

💡 Table Topics (Impromptu Speeches)
The theme was technology.
Questions included:
“What’s your favorite app?”
“Have you ever had trouble with an app?”
“What YouTube channel do you recommend?”

Even members who aren’t tech-savvy gave entertaining and creative responses, bringing plenty of laughter to the room.

✨ Workshop: Moment of Truth
We also held a workshop titled “Moment of Truth.” We discussed the importance of first impressions and what we, as a club, can do to create a welcoming experience for our guests. It was a meaningful conversation about how to make everyone feel at home.

To top it off, we were delighted to hear that our guest decided to join the club!

It was truly a wonderful and uplifting meeting.

Regular Meeting on Feb 21st

🌸 春が待ち遠しい2月後半の定例会レポート 🌸

メンバー9名＋ゲスト1名で、にぎやかで活気あふれる例会となりました。

🎤 準備スピーチ
今回のスピーカーはTさん。英語スピーチクラブですが、今回は日本語コンテスト出場に向けたリハーサルを披露。回を重ねるごとに完成度が増していくスピーチに、メンバー一同圧倒されました。3/1のDivision Contestがますます楽しみです！

💡 テーブルトピック（即興スピーチ）
テーマは「テクノロジー」。
「おすすめアプリは？」「トラブルになったアプリは？」「おすすめのYouTubeは？」などのお題に、ITが少し苦手なメンバーもユーモアたっぷりに挑戦し、会場は笑いに包まれました。

✨ ワークショップ：Moment of Truth
“第一印象に二度目はない”——
ゲストにどんな印象を与えているか、クラブとして何ができるかを全員で話し合いました。改めて、温かく迎える姿勢の大切さを確認する時間となりました。

そして最後には、ゲストの方から嬉しい入会表明も！
学びと笑顔にあふれた、素晴らしい例会となりました。

Regular Meeting on Feb 7th

雪の心配があった土曜日。コンテストが終了した直後、予定通り集まるかと心配でしたが、7人トーストマスターたちが集合。
オープニングソートでは、TM　Aが建国記念の日の思い出を話してくれました。ベテランマスターらしく、素晴らしいスピーチを見せてくれました。
プリペアスピーチではＴＭ　Ｔが生活をよりよくするための7つのコツ、と題したスピーチをしました。エバリュエーターのＴＭ　Ａは、説得力を増すために、もっと、例えば、間違いなく、確かに、圧倒的になどの、副詞を使うと有効だと、説得力のある提案をしてくれました。
ショートスピーチでは、TM　Ｄがいつものようにユニークなお題を提供。
そのうちの1つがあなたにとって、役に立たない、でも自慢できる特技はなんですか？
これに答えたＴＭ　Ｋは、面白く、けれど聴衆の興味を引くスピーチを見事にこなしました。
クロージングソートで、ＴＭ　Ｎはいつものようにウィットに富んだスピーチを、クローズにかけて行いました。見事なフィニッシュ！

寒い日でしたが、久しぶりに会えたメンバーも加わって、皆が一人一人役割を担い、アップリフティングな例会となりました。

Saturday brought concerns about snow. Right after the contest ended, I worried if everyone would gather as planned, but seven Toastmasters showed up.
For the opening speech, TM A shared memories of National Foundation Day. As a veteran master, he delivered a wonderful speech.
For the prepared speech, TM T gave a talk titled “Seven Tips for a Better Life.” Evaluator TM A offered a persuasive suggestion: to increase impact, using more adverbs like “undoubtedly,” “certainly,” or “overwhelmingly” would be effective.
For Impromptu Speeches, TM D provided his usual unique topics.
One was: What is a skill you have that is useless to you, but you can boast about?
TM K responded to this, delivering an entertaining yet captivating speech that skillfully held the audience's interest.
For the closing speech, TM N delivered his usual witty speech right up to the close. A brilliant finish!

It was a cold day, but with members we hadn't seen in a while joining us, everyone took on their roles, making it an uplifting meeting.

エリアF1スピーチコンテスト@甲府

スピーチコンテストのシーズンが始まっています。私たちのクラブが所属するエリアF1でも、2月1日（日）に甲府にてエリアコンテストが開催されました。

当日は、準備スピーチとテーブルトピックスピーチについて、日本語・英語それぞれの4つのコンテストが行われ、どの部門でも熱戦が繰り広げられました。私たちのクラブからは、TM Tさんが日本語コンテストで見事優勝、また英語コンテストではTM Nさんが第三位に入賞するなど、素晴らしい活躍を見せてくれました。

エリア内6つのクラブが集まった今回の大会は、会場設営からコンテストの運営、終了後の懇親会まで、終始一体感のあるイベントとなりました。各クラブのメンバーが役割を分担し、限られた時間の中で協力し合う姿は、まさにトーストマスターズらしい光景でした。

出場された皆さん、そして運営に携わった皆さん、本当にお疲れさまでした！

The speech contest season has begun. In Area F1, to which our club belongs, the Area Contest was held in Kofu on Sunday, February 1.

On the day, four contests were conducted—prepared speeches and table topics speeches in both Japanese and English—and each category featured exciting and highly competitive performances.
From our club, TM T won first place in the Japanese contest, and TM N achieved an excellent third-place finish in the English contest.

With six clubs from the area coming together, the event maintained a strong sense of unity throughout—from venue setup and contest operations to the post-event social gathering. Seeing members from each club share responsibilities and cooperate efficiently within a limited timeframe was truly a Toastmasters-like experience.

Congratulations to all the contestants, and heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed to running the event. Well done, everyone!

West Tokyo Hamura Toastmasters Club — an international community for practicing English and leadership skills — welcomed seven members to our January 17th session. It was a warm, fun atmosphere throughout 😊

🎤 Prepared Speech
Our speaker this time was TM N, who's preparing for the Area Speech Contest in Kōfu on Feb 1st. Their talk, “Smiling Face in Photo,” served as a practice run. Alongside the usual evaluations, everyone offered heartfelt advice, and we’re excited to hear the final version at the contest!

💡 Table Topics (Impromptu Speeches)
We tackled these topics: “Share a sports memory,” “What’s your goal for this year?” and “Tell us about a time you confessed your love.” The member who drew the last topic struggled at first but ended up sharing a sweet childhood story 😄

Our next session is Saturday, Feb 7th at 2:00 PM at the Hamura City Yutorogi Lifelong Learning Center. Whether you want to practice English speeches or challenge yourself with public speaking, guests are always welcome.
