Stranding Network Hokkaido Contributing to the coexistence of humankind with marine ecosystems and the biodiversity conservation Stranding Network Hokkaido is a non-profit organisation.

We are aiming to contribute to the coexistence of humankind with marine ecosystems and the conservation of biodiversity by collecting information and specimens of stranded, adrift and bycatch cetaceans (whale, dolphin, porpoise, etc.) in Hokkaido, Japan, and distributing them to academic researchers, for assisting to cetacean research. The stranding records we have collected are published in GBIF, a global biodiversity database, and contribute to the conservation of the Earth's biodiversity. https://doi.org/10.15468/f9y3xd

Thanks to the support of the Japan Fund for Global Environment, we have published Volume 4 of our journal 'humpe yan.' (in Japanese)

This issue includes detailed stranding information collected by SNH in 2024, reports on our outreach activities, introductions to research using stranded specimens, academic papers based on SNH specimens, a list of research presentations, and disclosure information related to the NPO.

Stranding information collected by SNH up to the end of 2024 has been registered in the GBIF (Global Biodiversity Information Facility) database. This data is now accessible worldwide as part of the biodiversity information for this marine region. Additionally, individual stranding records can be cited in academic publications.

To search for a specific stranding case, please use the SNH number under "Occurrences".

The registration has been carried out via JBIF (Japan Biodiversity Information Initiative), which is managed by institutions including the National Institute of Genetics.
