The IUAES Commissions on the Anthropology of Religion, Visual Anthropology, and Urban Anthropology are excited to announce the photo contest “Portraying Religions in the Public Space Photo Award,” that proposes to visually explore religions in the public space.

Submit a photo and caption on religions in the public space

The best 13 photos will be included into IUAES calendar 2027 “Portraying Religions in the Public Space,” that will be available in digital format for download

Open to all (scholars, students and visual artists)

No fee required

Deadline for submissions: April 30, 2026

Building on a COIL (Collaborative Online International Learning) activity across The University of the West Indies (St. Augustine, Trinidad & Tobago), Bridgewater State University (USA), and University of Toronto Mississauga (Canada), student speakers will reflect on doing anthropology from diverse institutional and geographic vantage points. Presentations will include live talks, posters, and recorded pieces from students majoring in anthropology as well as those encountering the discipline for the first time. A discussion and Q&A will follow.

We would like to share with you the 2026 Calendar "Portraying Religion and Health," which was produced as part of the “Portraying Religion and Health Photo Essay Award,” a collaborative initiative of the IUAES Commissions on the Anthropology of Religion, Visual Anthropology, Museums and Cultural Heritage, Medical Anthropology and Epidemiology, and the Anthropology of Pandemics. Organised in partnership with the World Anthropological Union (WAU) Congress 2025, this initiative is part of the hybrid congress taking place in Antigua, Guatemala, from November 3 to 8, 2025.

Thanks to the authors for sharing their interesting works, Paula Ascensio for her wonderful design, Daniela Calvo and Mihai Leaha for the curation, and Ricardo Fagoaga for his precious collaboration!
