10月17日、能登瓦の回収作業*を石川県珠洲市の本住寺にて実施しました。

今回は日蓮宗青年会（30名）、瓦バンク（10名）、越前セラミカ（5名）、芝浦工業大学（２名）の皆様にご協力いただきました。

*瓦の回収作業は、ボランタリー・アーキテクツ・ネットワーク（VAN）＋ 坂茂建築設計が、2024年1月1日に発生した能登半島地震により倒壊した家屋から能登瓦を回収して利活用するプロジェクトです。能登瓦は、一般的に普及している瓦よりも少し大きく、両面が釉薬で仕上げられています。この能登瓦を製造する会社が数年前に閉業していることから、奥能登を象徴する能登瓦の町並みを将来へとつなげるために、公費解体で粉砕されて処分される前に倒壊家屋から瓦や古材を回収し、次の人への橋渡しをおこないます。

最後の写真は、珠洲市の見附公園にて建設中の集会所の屋根に敷かれた能登瓦のようすです。

On October 17, we carried out the Noto-tile collection work* at Honju Temple in Suzu, Ishikawa—a temple that suffered significant damage due to the Noto Peninsula earthquake that occurred on January 1, 2024.

This time, we received support from the Nichirenshu Seinennkai (30 members), Kawara Bank (10 members), Echizen Seramika (5 members), and Shibaura Institute of Technology (2 members).

*This project, which the Voluntary Architects’ Network (VAN) + Shigeru Ban Architects started in July 2024, is focused on recovering and repurposing Noto tiles from houses that collapsed due to the Noto Peninsula Earthquake on January 1, 2024. Noto tiles are slightly larger than standard tiles and are finished with glaze on both sides. Since the company that used to manufacture these Noto tiles closed down a few years ago, the project aims to retrieve tiles from the collapsed houses before they are crushed and discarded by publicly funded demolitions; the tiles will be passed on to future generations with the hope of preserving the Noto tile landscapes that symbolize Oku-Noto region.

The last photo shows the Noto tiles laid on the roof of a community hall we have been constructing at Mitsuke Park in Suzu City.

現在、芝浦工業大学にて「ペーパー・サンクチュアリ」の日本巡回展が開催されています。

会場：芝浦工業大学　豊洲キャンパス　有元史郎記念校友会館交流プラザ
日時：2024年9月20日（金）ー10月20日（日） 10:00-17:00（最終入場16:30）

2022年2月にはじまったロシアのウクライナ侵攻以来、私たちボランタリー・アーキテクツ・ネットワーク（VAN)は、故郷を追われヨーロッパ各地に逃れたウクライナの人々が避難する施設にて、紙管と布で構成する「紙の間仕切りシステム」を提供してきました。

本展では、そうした難民（主に女性、高齢者、子供）の避難所に作った紙管と布の間仕切りを再利用し、彼女らの詩と写真を展示しています。

VANの創設者である坂 茂は、90年代より紙でできた素材を使ったシェルターや仮設住宅を世界各地で作り、難民の救済や災害支援に取り組んできました。坂は、世界の平和なくして日本の平和はないと考え、ウクライナの人々の境遇を多くの人に知ってもらいたいという願いを本展の挨拶文でも述べています。

展示のタイトルにある「サンクチュアリ」は、人々の身を危険から守るだけでなく、精神を保護し慰めるという意味があります。ぜひこの機会に、「ペーパー・サンクチュアリ」に触れに足をお運びください。


The Japan touring exhibition of the “Paper Sanctuary,” which was held in London, is being hosted at Shibaura Institute of Technology.

Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022, we the Voluntary Architects' Network (VAN) have been providing what we call the "Paper Partition System," made of paper tubes and fabric, to shelters for displaced Ukrainians who fled their homes and sought refuge across Europe.

In this exhibition, we are reusing the paper tubes and fabric partitions that were installed in those shelters to display the poetry and photographs of the refugees, primarily women, the elderly, and children.

Shigeru Ban, the founder of VAN, has been creating shelters and temporary housing using paper-based materials around the world since the 1990s, contributing to refugee relief and disaster support efforts. In his message for this exhibition, Ban expresses his belief that without peace in the world, there can be no peace in Japan and his hope that more people will become aware of the plight of the Ukrainian people.

The word “sanctuary” in the exhibition’s title not only refers to a place that protects people from physical danger but also to a space that offers spiritual solace and comfort. We warmly invite you to visit “Paper Sanctuary” and experience it for yourself.
