The Asian Research Institute of Underwater Archaeology or ARIUA is the only an active academic society for underwater cultural heritage in Japan. Although its headquarter is situated at Fukuoka-city, Kyushu, the institute has not only Japanese members but also foreign ones including Koreans or Germans. It was founded in 1986 under the name of the Kyushu Okinawa Society for Underwater Archaeology o

r KOSUWA, and then in 2005 became such a non-profit organisation. The president director is Mr. Kenzo Hayashida, who is an expert advisor of the Submerged Sites Study Committee at the Agency for Cultural Affairs and lecturer in Nautical Archaeology at the Graduate School, Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology. The institute publishes regularly the journal titled 'The Journal of Underwater Archaeological Studies', which is the only one periodical especially about underwater cultural heritage in Japan / アジア水中考古学研究所は、日本でほぼ唯一の水中文化遺産関連の学術団体です。その本部は九州の福岡市にありますが、研究所には日本人ばかりではなく、韓国やドイツなど海外の研究者も参加しています。前身の九州・沖縄考古学協会は1986年に設立され、それが2005年に現在の非営利活動法人に衣替えしました。理事長は、文化庁の水中遺跡検討委員会委員で東京海洋大学大学院講師（海洋考古学）の林田憲三です。アジア水中考古学研究所は、日本で唯一の水中文化遺産専門学術雑誌『水中考古学研究』も刊行しています。

参加希望者は、下記のQRコードから第1次参加登録をして下さい(無料)。中東における紛争の影響により、会議がハイブリッド形式となるか、100%対面形式となるかは、未定です。後者となった場合に発生する大会参加費については、改めて6-7月に公告の第2次参加登録の際の徴収となります。

Advanced registration now open!! Please note that all participants (chairs, presenters, audience) who are planning to join us in Bali MUST register through the Advanced registration form. Only those who have registered will be sent the link to pay the fees in June.

Registration Fees

Fees are set at USD 130 for participants from A-list countries and USD 100 for those from B-list countries.

Discounted student rates will also be offered, with final amounts to be announced in early June.

The 6th Asia-Pacific Conference on Maritime and Underwater Cultural Heritage in Bali, Indonesia from 26th to 31st October 2026.

Prof. Akifumi Iwabuchi and Prof. Kotaro Yamafune, both of whom are ARIUA members, are organizing the session titled 'History and Current Trends of Underwater Archaeology around East Asia' during the conference:

ARIUA sincerely expects everyone to do presentations and to submit papers (optional) at the session (1a) of the conference in Bali in order to present the latest findings of the research to the academic world.

If you would like to do so, please fill the following on-line form up and submit it (300 words abstract and 100 words short bio):
